The Chicago Sun-Times left its front page blank in a plea for subscribers on Monday in an effort to "protect the long-term survival" of its newsroom.

The unorthodox appeal comes one month after the 174-year-old newspaper completed a round of layoffs as it struggles with falling advertising revenue from its print edition.

The Sun-Times has been working to build digital subscriptions for content that readers in the past have gotten for free.

Yulia Skripal's surprise video statement and walkabout yesterday has, as usual in this case, raised more questions than it has provided answers. The MSM has predictably addressed none of those questions and been content to simply air the video along with portions of her statement, laced with anti-Russian commentary and distorted summaries of the backstory. Fortunately those in the alt media are free to try to do a little better.

Reuters broke the story, and claimed an exclusive, but have not yet clarified their bureau chief Guy Faulconbridge, whose name appears on the article actually, spoke to Yulia in person.

The strange prelude to the statement in which we see Yulia walking amongst foliage in a "secret location" as if she's auditioning for a commercial or doing a promo for a true-movie about herself is surreal and bizarre. Why not a simple piece to camera? Why put her through the added ordeal of being taken to the woods somewhere and asked to wander about smiling? Are they trying to prove she's ambulatory? Happy? free?

If so they have failed on two of the three counts. She doesn't seem happy or even comfortable, and certainly doesn't appear to be free to speak her own thoughts. Whose idea was it to film her in this location? How much duress was she under to comply.

Who is Philip Cross?
Wkipedia contributor "Mojito Paraiso" recently tried the experiment of creating an entry for "Philip Cross" the apparently pseudonymous editor/contributor who has been a persistent defamer/disinfo source, making rapid-fire and negative editing of the Wikipedia entries for many alt-media and "pro-Russia" journalists and commentators.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the article was disappeared very rapidly. And in what looks a lot like overkill, Mojito_Paraiso was then banned from editing in perpetuity. Apparently defaming John Pilger, George Galloway, Media Lens etc is acceptable Wikiconduct, but drawing attention to the persona responsible is a banning offence

Comment: It is long past time to rethink Wikipedia as a creditable source of information.

On Thursday, during a federal court hearing in Davenport, Iowa, officials revealed that the confidential police video - a key piece of evidence in exonerating a cop who killed an innocent mom - does not corroborate the cop's claims that he was bitten by a dog before firing the fatal shots that accidentally killed the mother of two.

As TFTP previously reported, the Burlington police department released a 12-second clip from a Burlington Police officer's body cam showing him shooting and killing Autumn Steele.

The alleged dog bite is a key component in the case which allowed police officer Jesse Hill to be justified in firing the shots that killed Steele in January of 2015. According to the official story, the German shepherd jumped on Hill's back and bit his thigh, causing him injuries which required treatment.

The shooting was justified and Hill not disciplined, according to investigators, because Hill was in fear of his life during the dog attack and therefore did nothing wrong when he fired his weapon multiple times - and hitting Steele in her chest, killing her.

Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of Costa Mesa told a group of California real estate agents this month that it should be OK for homeowners to refuse to sell their homes to gays and lesbians, prompting the National Association of Realtors to withdraw its endorsement.

"Every homeowner should be able to make a decision not to sell their home to someone (if) they don't agree with their lifestyle," the congressman said, according to The Orange County Register.

Rohrabacher, who is prone to off-the-wall statements and positions, told the paper in an interview, "We've drawn a line on racism, but I don't think we should extend that line. ... A homeowner should not be required to be in business with someone they think is doing something that is immoral."

His coastal Orange County contest is considered crucial for Democrats seeking to retake control of the House. But the late entrance of well-known Republican Scott Baugh into the race ignited fears that the congressman and Baugh would win more votes than any of the Democrats on the ballot, and lock the rival party out of contention in November.

The opioid epidemic is openly being reported in the media as a sort of plague that characterizes the decade we're currently living in, and it's a fair assessment. The media isn't hesitant to cover it anymore because for one, it's undeniable that it's happening, and two, the opioid epidemic gives authorities, pharmaceutical corporations and others power. It provides people who receive research grants, and government agencies who want to crack down on herbal medicine all the justification they need to do what they do.

Seattle, Washington and the surrounding area has long been notorious for its problem of opiate and opioid addiction. From heroin to oxycodone and the various analogues of opioids that pharma corporations have profited from prescribing to addicts such as buprenorphine and methadone, it's all firmly saturated into the state of Washington, comparable to California.

A pedophile who was part of a sick gang that drugged and raped babies has been found dead in his prison cell with his penis chopped off.

James King, 31, who changed his name from Robin Hollyson, was jailed for 24 years for raping a three-month-old baby and filming it.

A fellow prisoner, John Denham, confirmed to the inquest that inmates at HMP Bristol took contacts on King.

King was part of a sick gang that took delight in drugging and raping babies described by a judge as "evil beyond rational understanding"

Three men have been killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza, Palestinian and Israeli media said, citing the Gaza Health ministry. The incident comes days after the resumption of March of Return protests.

The men were killed near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, an official from the Health Ministry said, as cited by Arabic language media and AFP.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces released a statement saying that their tank "targeted a military observation post in the southern Gaza Strip a short while ago." It added that "no injuries to IDF soldiers were reported," without revealing details of any civilian casualties.

She would always have the brightest smile as she stood at the intersection of Avenue T and Ocean Ave in Brooklyn, N.Y. circa 1968. She was our crossing guard and we all loved Mrs. Lombardo. Each morning and afternoon during school days she would greet each and every kid who passed by her post. On Sundays, before and after each Catholic Mass at St. Edmunds church , she would be there, again with that contagious smile. The young kids loved her as one would love a favorite aunt, and the seniors, who seemed to make up a majority of each Sunday mass, enjoyed the special care Mrs. Lombardo offered them. Then, perhaps sometime in 1968, her son Tommy joined the Marines along with his childhood buddy Pete Haros, of the Haros Coffee shop on Avenue U. A year later Pete returned to the coffee shop from his tour of duty in Vietnam unscathed. Tommy returned in a box! Mrs. Lombardo still took up her post on that corner, but the sparkling smile was replaced by what this writer remembers as a 'Mona Lisa smile' or half frown. As with the lady in the famous portrait, Mrs. Lombardo had too much to say without saying a thing.

Memorial Day is around the corner once again, and it seems ' The Dogs of War ' are at it as always. Fifty plus years ago there were 58,220 Tommy Lombardos who would never see the smiles of their Moms ever again. Factor that in with approximately 2 million Vietnamese who lost their lives, and one can deduce what our empire's imperial presence meant. For what? For whom? Yet, each and every year spanning these decades, our empire's handlers and their compliant, embedded media sell us this fake and false bill of goods. They honor those dead as ' fallen heroes ' when they should be apologizing for using them as pawns for the geopolitical game they play.

Family removes Alexa devices after it sends recordings of their private conversations to a stranger (UPDATE)

A concerned family is speaking out after they claim that their Amazon Alexa device recorded a conversation they were having in their home, and sent it to a random contact who alerted them to the fact that he had heard everything they said.

A homeowner named Danielle, who asked for her last name to remain anonymous, told KIRO 7 that she and her husband were in their house, discussing home improvement projects and hardwood floors when they received an urgent call from one of her husband's employees in Seattle.

"The person on the other line said, 'unplug your Alexa devices right now, you're being hacked,'" Danielle said.

"We unplugged all of them and he proceeded to tell us that he had received audio files of recordings from inside our house," she said. "At first, my husband was, like, 'no you didn't!' And the (recipient of the message) said 'You sat there talking about hardwood floors.' And we said, 'oh gosh, you really did hear us.'"

The employee sent the couple the email he had received with the audio files, and Danielle confirmed that it was, in fact, a direct recording of their conversation. She told KIRO 7 that the Amazon Alexa had access to every room in her house because it controlled the heating, lighting and security system in her home.

Comment: Amazon has a plan to put one of these in every home. How well can you trust them with your privacy? The creepy laughter is just a bonus feature.

Later Thursday, in response to inquiries, Amazon added an explanation, saying the customer had triggered a command that the device send an audio recording to a specific contact.

"Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like 'Alexa,'" Amazon spokesperson Dawn Brun said in an emailed statement.

She continued: "Then, the subsequent conversation was heard as a 'send message' request. At which point, Alexa said out loud 'To whom?' At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customer's contact list. Alexa then asked out loud, '[contact name], right?' Alexa then interpreted background conversation as 'right.' As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely."
