For years Roseanne Barr has been talking trash about Palestinians and Muslims, without regrets

Roseanne Barr lost her popular show on ABC two days ago after she tweeted a racist and Islamophobic comment about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. The network's response was fairly instant, and Barr launched into apology mode.

But as many have pointed out, Barr has a long history of hateful speech about Palestinians and Muslims, and of describing supporters of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) aimed at Israel as Nazis. And she did not suffer career-wise for those comments.

This comment from Barr, about putting Palestinians in ovens, is particularly repugnant.

Comment: Roseanne Barr has always been a bit of a mixed bag. She's been known to talk about MK Ultra, child trafficking, and prosecuting the banksters. But how does someone go from being anti-Zionist to enthusiastic pro-Zionist in such a short period of time? While she clearly isn't afraid to speak her mind, Roseanne is clearly lacking in discernment.

Controversial MSNBC commentator Joy Reid has apologized for blog posts about Israel, 9/11 and John McCain, choosing not to blame phantom "hackers" this time. The network is standing by Reid, saying she has "grown and evolved."

"There are things I deeply regret and am embarrassed by, things I would have said differently and issues where my position has changed. Today I'm sincerely apologizing again," Reid said in a statement on Friday.

On Thursday, the Daily Caller published excerpts from blog posts written by Reid, calling CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer "a former flak [sic] for the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)," and saying that AIPAC is a "powerful lobbying group that holds the whip hand over Republican and Dmeocratic [sic] members of Congress alike."

Why are so many American kids dying?

pill counting
A perfect storm of murder, addiction and carelessness has fueled a recent and troubling increase in deaths among U.S. children and teens, a new government report shows.

The total death rate for those aged 10 to 19 rose 12 percent between 2013 and 2016, mostly due to an increase in deaths from accidental injury, homicide and suicide, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

In short, the United States is becoming less safe for teenagers.

The primary causes of injury deaths were motor vehicle accidents, suicide, firearms-related murders and drug overdoses, the report discovered.

"For children in the U.S., the rate of deaths has increased recently, and it's from a multitude of these injury death causes," said report author Sally Curtin, a statistician with the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. "You can't just say it's suicide or homicide. It really is a combination of causes."

A man who police say was wielding a knife was shot to death Friday by officers in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness location in Torrance.

The shooting occurred just before 9 a.m. in the 20000 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, according to Torrance police Sgt. Ronald Harris.

Officers responded to the location on "a service call involving a subject brandishing a knife in the area of Planet Fitness," he said.

Police say the suspect - described as in his 30s -had a folding knife that was approximately four inches in length, which he was waving around in the parking lot.

Witnesses said the man was holding a snake and doing some sort of "ritualistic dance" with the snake in the parking lot, according to CBS2's Michele Gile.

Starbucks employees respond to the company's 'face-saving' virtue signalling

starbucks toothbrushing
Starbucks employees are bristling after being forced to sit through an entire day of training on racial bias on Tuesday, following an April incident in which a Philadelphia manager called the police on a pair of black men who were sitting in the store without having purchased anything, which sparked a nationwide protest and culminated with Starbucks becoming "America's largest public toilet."

In order to atone for the now-fired manager's poor judgement, Starbucks rolled out a new "inclusiveness" policy - shuttering 8,000 locations for a day of "Color Brave" training which included several documentary videos, notebooks for employees to record their "private thoughts," and a 68-page employee guidebook which teaches employees about topics such as institutional racism and the history of prejudice.

According to the WSJ, "they also listened to a series of audio recordings of Starbucks employees describing interactions they have had with customers in which their own biases became apparent."

The whole thing made many employees, especially African Americans, highly uncomfortable.

Louis Vuitton hired a shaman to 'tame the weather' for fashion show

Shaman
Luxury brand Louis Vuitton hired a shaman to prevent rain from marring the brand's recent over-the-top show in the south of France.

Sources tell Page Six that while the guru had also been hired to tame the weather at previous shows around the world, skeptical execs at parent company LVMH had recently axed the jet-setting holy man from the budget.

But when a downpour unfashionably soaked an outdoor Dior show last week in Chantilly, France, the shaman was back on the payroll for Louis Vuitton's fashion show at the Fondation Maeght, near Antibes, this week.

Top stylist Kate Young posted as part of a fashion diary for Vogue.com for the Louis Vuitton resort show: "Vuitton hired a shaman to stave off the rain and apparently all his work succeeded (kissing trees, or so I heard), because it didn't rain until after the show finished!"

Anglican bishops invite transgenders to be priests, Russian church thinks they need to see a psychiatrist

One man's mental health diagnosis may be another man's ticket to the priesthood, according to recent developments in one of the world's largest Protestant denominations. The Anglican Communion has 85 million members worldwide, all of whom have ties with the Church of England.

To support a new Diversity Drive, and to help fill vacant spots in English churches, leading Anglican bishops have invited transgender persons to serve as priests. The Daily Telegraph reports:
The guidance, titled "welcoming and honouring LGBT+ people", warns that the church's reputation as being unwelcoming towards gay and transgender people is stopping young people attending.

"We very much hope that they, like everyone else, feel encouraged to serve on PCCs, or as churchwardens and worship leaders, for instance, and are supported in exploring vocations to licensed lay and ordained ministries," the guidance says.

"Nobody should be told that their sexual or gender identity in itself makes them an unsuitable candidate for leadership in the Church."

Unannounced active shooter drill traumatizes middle school students

students in class
A middle school principal in Virginia has apologized to parents for an unannounced active shooter drill that seemed too real for some students - including one who "literally thought she was going to die," her mother said.

While unannounced safety drills aren't new in the district, Short Pump Middle School Principal Thomas McAuley acknowledged in an email that Tuesday's exercise at the school "seemed too real," the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

"Please know our intent is never to cause unnecessary anxiety," McAuley's email read. "Using unannounced drills helps students as well as our own staff to 'train their brains' to respond appropriately under stress."

But the apology came a little too late for the mother of an eighth-grade girl who thought the drill was real after a code blue was announced on the school's intercom, prompting the girl to send her mother a text message saying, "I love you," the mom, April Sullivan, told the newspaper.

"They thought someone was in their school attacking them," Sullivan said. "My daughter was traumatized. She literally thought she was going to die."

Comment: That's not a fair comparison. A fire drill doesn't contain the threat of 'imminent' death with it. If you were to remove that element, then how will it really prepare people? The question is whether these drills will do anything to better prepare people for an active shooter situation. Do they just end up causing undue stress on the students or will they eventually desensitize people to them, and negate the whole purpose of being able to quickly and safely respond to a crisis? 'Wish You Were Here': Roger Waters displays pro-Assange message at Berlin concert

Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd singer, has once again mixed the worlds of music and politics by displaying a banner in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at a concert in Berlin.

The neon red text, which read "Resist the attempted silencing of Julian Assange," was projected onto a black backdrop before his concert on Saturday night. Waters, who is known for making radical political statements on stage, is an admirer of Assange and has previously featured images of the whistleblower in his shows.

Assange is unlikely to see the message of support, however. Housed in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since claiming asylum in 2012, the Australian has been banned from using the phone and internet for several weeks. He is also prohibited from having visitors.
