European nations reveal end date for Covid restrictions

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that the remaining domestic Covid restrictions in England will be removed in less than two weeks, bringing their end forward a month earlier than initially planned. The French government, meanwhile, has also indicated an imminent easing of Covid curbs.

While official guidance in England will continue to urge people to stay at home if they contract Covid, there will no longer be a legal requirement to do so, or a threat of being fined up to £10,000 ($13,548) if you fail to self-isolate.

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, Johnson said he plans to end any remaining restrictions in the country when the House of Commons returns from recess on February 21, with the government set to present MPs with its "strategy for living with Covid."

Johnson had previously set March 24 as the date for ending all restrictions, but has now chosen to bring the date forward, calling it an "important step" in the country's recovery from the pandemic.

Comment: It's only a 'suggestion' at this point, let's see if anything comes of it.

Protesters defy police threat with fuel cans

Hundreds of protesters appeared to mock Ottawa Police's threat to arrest anyone caught providing fuel to demonstrating truckers by marching through the city carrying red fuel cans this week.

The police warned on Sunday that anyone caught providing "material support," such as fuel, to the truckers protesting against Covid-19 restrictions would be arrested in an attempt to starve the demonstration of resources.

However, hundreds of protesters responded to the threat by carrying red fuel cans - mostly empty or filled with water - through the streets of Ottawa.

One video showed protesters marching towards parliament with fuel cans in hand, while another showed a man carrying two cans labeled "Got gas?"

Class dynamics: More thoughts on the Freedom Convoy

I want to follow up last week's post with some further thoughts on the trucker protest in Ottawa - and indeed elsewhere in the country (and maybe around the world?). This is not meant as a hard alternative to what I wrote last week. Some combination of the analyses (for example, see the footnote below) could be true. But it is possible that today's thoughts will wind up providing a better insight into what's happening.

In different posts on this substack I've brought up the question of class, but I haven't really done a deep dive on it. If you're interested in better understanding my take on this topic, check out my book, The Managerial Class on Trial. As I explained there, it's not unfair to think of me as a right-wing Marxist. If that seems odd to you, you might want to check out that discussion as well, in the same book. In fact, if there's interest, I may excerpt and expand the relevant second of the book in a post to this substack to elaborate the idea. (Maybe let me know in the comments if you'd be interested in that.) The short of it, here, though, is that I do take class analysis seriously and I do think the relation to the means of production, as an analytical tool, provides valuable insight.

Hypocrisy on display: Demonizing Freedom Convoy and praising BLM protests

The differences between authorities' approaches to Canada truck protests and BLM reveal political hypocrisy and discrimination

The many differences between Canada's trucker protest and the 2020 BLM movement are symptomatic of weak and venal leaders who judge the merit of civil actions not on the issues per se, but rather on the dictates of woke politics.

A strange thing happened on the way to Ottawa, where thousands of long-haul truckers have converged to protest mandatory vaccination measures. The mainstream media, squeaky clean arbiters of news and information that they are, wasted no time portraying the protesters as a motley crew of knuckle-dragging fascists hell-bent on making life for law-abiding citizens as miserable as possible.

'Utter madness': Iconic TV host blasts move to BAN meat and dairy from council events and introduce more plant based meals, backs farmer protest

Jeremy Clarkson has today backed a farmers' protest against a council's plans to introduce vegan-only meals at its events and provide more 'plant based' meals for school dinners.

The ex Top Gear host, 61, and Amazon Prime star, showed his support for the Oxfordshire Food and Farmers Rally that gathered outside the offices of Oxfordshire County Council, calling the move 'utter, utter madness.'

Furious farmers in the county say that the plans send a 'bad message' to the public and called on them to be supportive of local produce. The council said the move was part of its efforts to tackle climate change.

Canadian truckers inspire 'freedom' protests across the world

A protest movement by Canadian truckers angered over Covid-19 vaccine rules has become a rallying point for opponents of pandemic restrictions, firing up crowds from New York to New Zealand.

In New York, dozens of municipal workers facing dismissal unless they get shots marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall on Monday carrying giant US and Canadian flags.

"Unvaccinated Lives Matter" and "Workers Are Essential, Mandates Are Not", read signs carried by the crowd, which included firefighters and teachers.

In New Zealand, inspired by the Canadian "Freedom Convoy", trucks and campervans blocked streets near parliament in Wellington on Tuesday to protest against Covid-19 restrictions and vaccinations. Protests continued on Wednesday.

MORE photos emerge of maskless Stacey Abrams among masked-up school children

Stacey Abrams maskless
Earlier this week, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams posted photos of her visit to a Georgia school, and quickly removed the tweet after receiving backlash for appearing at the school unmasked. Abrams appeared in photos taken at Glennwood Elementary School classroom just outside of Atlanta.

The school principal, Dr. Holly Brookins, had posted pictures on her Twitter account of Abrams' visit, which included three photos of her maskless. Abrams retweeted the post, writing that her visit was "spectacular, delightful, and outstanding." Brookins' Twitter account appears to be deactivated as of Sunday morning, Fox News reported. However, the photo continued to spread and generate strong criticism. These maskless photos came despite the Decatur City Commission reinstating a mandatory masking ordinance last month.

New documentary series on white people dubbed 'racist'

Showtime white people
Conservatives have lambasted Showtime over a new docu-series, claiming it gives an anti-white slant to race relations in the US.

Promising to "give white America a black eye," the documentary 'Everything's Gonna be All White' premieres this Friday, but outraged commentators have already slammed its trailer as "racist anti-white propaganda."

The trailer, which was released last Tuesday, opens with actress Amanda Seales declaring: "I think what annoys me most about white people is when they pretend that they're the victim. What's also annoying is when they, you know, when they kill us."

Comment: 'Harriet and Fredrick' are more likely up there shaking their heads at this divisive garage. Fortunately, it is a small minority of ideologically possessed zealots who hold views like this. Unfortunately, Hollywood and the media love messages that pit people against each other.

Mom handcuffed, jailed for letting 14-year-old babysit kids during COVID-19

Melissa Henderson

When COVID-19 shut down her children's daycare in May of 2020, and Melissa Henderson had to go to work, she asked her 14-year-old daughter, Linley, to babysit the four younger siblings. Linley was engaged in remote learning when her youngest brother, four-year-old Thaddeus, spied his friend outside and went over to play with him. It was about 10 or 15 minutes before Linley realized he was missing. She guessed that he must be at his friend's house, and went to fetch him.

In the meantime, the friend's mom had called the police.

Now Henderson, a single mom in Blairsville, Georgia, is facing criminal reckless conduct charges for letting her 14-year-old babysit. The charges carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison and fine of $1,000. The arresting officer, Deputy Sheriff Marc Pilote, wrote in his report that anything terrible could have happened to Thaddeus, including being kidnapped, run over, or "bitten by a venomous snake." (When Henderson protested that the kid was only gone a few minutes, Pilote responded that a few minutes was all the time a venomous snake needed.)

Pfizer quietly adds language warning that 'unfavorable pre-clinical, clinical or safety data' may impact business

Two weeks ago, the FDA begged a Texas judge to delay production on the first monthly batch of 55,000 pages of Covid-19 vaccine data submitted to the agency by Pfizer. Originally, the agency was set to produce just 500 pages-per-month.

Now, Pfizer - which just forecast $54 billion in Covid-related sales in 2022, appears to be anticipating some bad news, as evidenced by several redline changes in their Q4 earnings releases.

As Rubicon Capital's Kelly Brown notes on Twitter, the changes center around disclosures of unfavorable safety data.
