US warship had close call with Houthi missile in Red Sea

A cruise missile launched by the Houthis into the Red Sea on Tuesday night came within a mile of a US destroyer before it was shot down, four US officials told CNN, the closest a Houthi attack has come to a US warship.

In the past, these missiles have been intercepted by US destroyers in the area at a range of eight miles or more, the officials said. But the USS Gravely had to use its Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for the first time since the US began intercepting the Houthi missiles late last year, which ultimately succeeded in downing the missile, officials said.

The CIWS, an automated machine gun designed for close-range intercepts, is one of the final defensive lines the ship has to shoot down an incoming missile when other layers of defense have failed to intercept it.

The episode underscores the threat the Houthis continue to pose to US naval assets and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, despite multiple US and British strikes on Houthi infrastructure inside Yemen. The close call also comes just days after three US service members were killed in a drone attack by Iran-backed militants at a US outpost in Jordan.

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned the "reckless and illegal attacks" against US warships and commercial vessels in the region.

Austin, during a bilateral meeting with his British counterpart, said:
"We can see Iran's hand here as well, providing the Houthis with advanced conventional weapons, intelligence and expertise."

Comment: Oh...did we mention 'Iran'? (Eleven times) Repetitious messaging solidifies associations - particularly with numb audiences that listen to CNN.

Foreign spies trying to punish South Africa for taking on Israel - minister

Pretoria's security minister has warned of foreign meddling to punish the country over its genocide allegations...

South Africa's government has claimed that it's facing destabilization campaigns by foreign intelligence agencies as retaliation for daring to launch a genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The country's security minister, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, said her agency has been put on high alert to deal with foreign meddling as the country prepares to hold national elections later this year. She told reporters on Thursday in Pretoria:
"There are international misinformation campaigns which are aimed at destabilizing the country. As the security cluster, we are very focused on that work. We are monitoring, and we are strengthening our capacity."
Ntshavheni confirmed concerns raised earlier this week by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who said foreign governments were using their intelligence agencies to punish Pretoria for accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in its war with Hamas. Neither the security minister nor Ramaphosa identified the foreign adversaries involved in those alleged meddling efforts.

South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor told reporters on Wednesday that she had spoken with the country's head of police about whether she was being adequately protected amid her criticism of Israel. She claimed, at the same briefing, that West Jerusalem was disregarding last week's ICJ order to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza while fighting Hamas:
"I believe the rulings of the court have been ignored. Hundreds of people have been killed in the last three of four days, and clearly, Israel believes it has license to do as it wishes."

SOTT Focus: NewsReal: USA's Terrorist Proxy War Substitute For Actual War Against Iran

On Friday night the US military says it fired 125 missiles at 85 targets in Iraq and Syria in 'retaliation' for 'Iranian-backed militias' firing a drone at a US base in Jordan and killing three American soldiers. Why didn't Russian air defenses in Syria attempt to block the US airstrikes? Why did the Jordanian government initially deny any base in its country had been hit? What are these 'Iran-backed militias'? And will this escalate into direct war between major world powers?

This week on NewsReal, Joe and Niall take you on a tour outside the BS zone of the Western 'infosphere' to learn what's actually happening in the Middle East.

Best of the Web: Yemeni officials allied with West-UAE-Saudi coalition ditch 'UN recognised gov't' to join the defenders of Gaza

yemen houthi
The Gaza war and renewed US-UK strikes on Yemen are shattering what remains of the UAE-Saudi-led coalition. Now Yemenis of all stripes are flocking to embrace the Sanaa government and its resistance stance.
While the Red Sea military operations of Yemeni resistance movement Ansarallah have shaken up geopolitical calculations of Israel's war on Gaza, they have also had far-reaching consequences on the country's internal political and military dynamics.

By successfully obstructing Israeli vessels from traversing the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Ansarallah-led Sanaa government has emerged as a powerful symbol of resistance in defense of the Palestinian people - a cause deeply popular across Yemen's many demographics. Sanaa's position stands in stark contrast to that of the Saudi and Emirati-backed government in Aden, which, to the horror of Yemenis, welcomed attacks by US and British forces on 12 January.

The US-UK airstrikes have offended Yemenis fairly universally, prompting some heavyweight internal defections. Quite suddenly, Sanaa has transformed into a destination for a number of Yemeni militias previously aligned with the UAE and Saudi Arabia, now publicly declaring their allegiance to Ansarallah.

UK's flagship aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth suffers ANOTHER malfunction and won't lead major NATO war game

Royal Navy HMS Queen Elizabeth
© Royal NavyHMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy's flagship, had to pull out of its role leading the largest NATO exercise since the Cold War at the last minute, the Royal Navy reports.

Routine pre-sailing checks identified an issue with a coupling on the 65,000-ton warship's starboard propeller shaft, preventing it from sailing on Sunday.

The warship was set to participate in an upcoming NATO exercise but had to be replaced by another UK aircraft carrier, the HMS Prince of Wales.

Comment: The number of malfunctions and blunders the US and UK military has suffered in recent years is almost unbelievable, and so either the Navy decided against sending the aircraft carrier and needed an excuse, or it really is a sign of how corrupt and incompetent the UK's military is these days (likely the latter); either way, as is also the case for the US: for such maniacal and aggressive nations to also be so utterly feckless (which historically do go hand in hand) is rather foreboding for its people and their future.

That said, the consequences of same are already evident throughout their respective societies: And 2 weeks ago: Meanwhile: 'Secret Russian electronic warfare weapon disrupting GPS of ships & jets' claims Estonia's military chief, amid NATO wargames

UK judge dismisses Trump's lawsuit alleging infamous dossier and its 'scandalous claims' damaged his reputation

A judge in London threw out a lawsuit Thursday filed by former President Trump which claimed the infamous dossier and its "shocking and scandalous claims" harmed his reputation.

"There are no compelling reasons to allow the claim to proceed to trial," Judge Karen Steyn said of the lawsuit Trump filed against Orbis Business Intelligence, a company co-founded by Christopher Steele, the former British spy who created a dossier in 2016.

The dossier was paid for by Democrats and published during Trump's first presidential bid against Hillary Clinton. It contained uncorroborated allegations and rumors that spread like wildfire among Trump's critics and through mainstream media outlets.

Comment: A judgement almost as outrageous as the various rulings on Assange's case. Of course Trump's reputation was damaged. The Russian "dirt" was meant to knock Trump out of the 2016 presidential race by claiming his unfitness for office.

Crimea is historically Russian - Polish president

Duda
The Crimean Peninsula was historically part of Russia "for most of the time," Polish President Andrzej Duda has said, expressing doubts Ukraine will be able to capture it.

The president made the remarks on Friday during an interview with YouTube channel Kanal Zero. Asked whether he believed Ukraine could seize Crimea from Russia - a goal repeatedly proclaimed by Kiev - Duda said it was hard for him to answer such a question, particularly given the "special" history of the peninsula.

"I don't know if [Ukraine] will regain Crimea, but I believe it will regain Donetsk and Lugansk," he stated, referring to the two republics that broke off Ukraine in 2014 and joined Russia after referendums in late 2022. Crimea, however, "is a special place," including for "historical reasons," the Polish president argued.
"In fact, if we look historically, it was in Russia's hands for most of the time," he stated.

Comment: Stating such a simple fact as Crimea being historically Russian has been enough reason for being called a Kremlin stooge or a Putin agent by the Western politicians and MSM, during the last 10 years.

Comment: Pointing out reality is not something which will win you many friends among the Western Russophobic 'garden' elite.

Western countries refusing to cooperate with probe into Ukrainian POW plane crash - Kremlin

The US and its allies have shown little interest in launching an international probe into last week's crash involving a Russian aircraft that was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday. President Vladimir Putin called for an investigation on Wednesday.

A Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft with 65 Ukrainian POWs on board crashed in Belgorod Region on January 24. All of the Ukrainians, as well as six crew members and three Russian military personnel, died in the crash. Moscow immediately blamed Kiev for the incident.

On Wednesday, Putin said Moscow had asked "for international experts to be deployed [here] to conduct an analysis, assess the existing material evidence" as part of an international probe.

Hamas official: Any ceasefire in Gaza must entail full withdrawal of Israeli forces, end of siege

Osama Hamdan
Osama Hamdan, the representative of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Lebanon
A senior official of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says any ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip must entail complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and lifting of the regime's blockade of the territory.

Osama Hamdan, the movement's representative in Lebanon, made the remarks at a press conference in Beirut on Saturday.

"Since the beginning of the aggression, the movement has stated that it is open to discussing any initiatives or ideas that can stop the barbaric aggression on our people and restrain this criminal enemy that has murdered civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, and destroyed civilian infrastructure and human life in the Gaza Strip," he said.

Hamdan added that the movement has received the general framework proposal discussed at the Paris Quartet meeting, adding, "The [Hamas] leadership's discussions and consultations on are based on the premise that negotiations would lead to a total end of the terrorist aggression against our people and a complete withdrawal of the occupation army from Gaza."

Comment: Now we know why the Israeli's agreed to the ceasefire deal, they knew the Palestinians wouldn't.

US unleashes wave of missile strikes in Syria and Iraq 'to get back at Iran' - Updates

Washington has launched a new bombing campaign against Iranian-backed fighters in Iraq and Syria

The Pentagon has commenced its retaliation for a drone attack that killed three US troops at a secretive base in Jordan, launching airstrikes that hit dozens of targets in Iraq and Syria linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups.

"Our response began today" and "will continue at times and places of our choosing," US President Joe Biden announced on Friday night. The airstrikes started around midnight on Saturday local time and hit more than 85 Iranian-linked targets, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

The bombings come nearly one week after a drone packed with explosives struck Tower 22, a US base in Jordan located near the Syrian and Iraqi borders, killing three soldiers and wounding more than 40 others. The attack, which the US blamed on the Iranian-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq, marked the first deaths of American troops in a wave of assaults triggered by the Israel-Hamas war.

Comment: The background for this attack is that on Sunday 28 January 2024, three US soldiers were killed in a drone attack near Syria-Jordan border, following which Biden commented: "Today, America's heart is heavy." After a week of analysis and deliberation, the US is making good on its hegemonic interpretation of retributive justice - as if the US Government needed a PMU drone strike to do what it had in mind to do anyway, but needed 'legal justification' to plausibly execute.

Comment: The Iraqi PMU militia has attacked US forces around 160 times since Oct 7th because they want them out of Syria and Iraq, and to put pressure on Israel. The Pentagon chose the 'Jordan' incident to disclose that US troops died because they wanted to give Biden an election photo-op and to manipulate Americans into accepting 'justified limited strikes' against the Iraqi militia countering 'ISIS' in the region. Also, the base which that militia hit wasn't in Jordan, it was in Syria. And it's the one the Russians have for years said 'ISIS' comes from.

Whether this will escalate into a major war with Iran remains to be seen, but for now the US is at least acting in accordance with its stated goal of not wanting to see a major war in the Middle East. So long as it's everyone 'proxy/terrorist' forces targeting each other, it's 'kept below the threshold of an actual war'...
