Brussels bombings: Europe is playing with fire

Brussels, the administrative capital of Europe, was turned into a war zone after a series of deadly bomb blasts caused the city to shut down all transport links to the outside world.

Zaventem International Airport was struck by two blasts during the early morning rush hour. An hour later, a metro station in downtown Brussels underneath the European Council headquarters was also hit by a third bomb.

The vicinity of the third blast is where key European Union buildings and related offices are located. Terrified administrative staff spoke of feeling shockwaves in the upper stories of buildings as chaos and bloodshed descended on the streets below.

Comment: Curiously, none of the bomb blasts actually struck any of the "key EU buildings", but rather hit locations where mainly civilians would be hit. Something doesn't add up. As the sott.net editors recently wrote regarding this curious choice:
The Brussels attacks were a sophisticated multi-site operation that somehow evaded all digital and physical security of a city that is effectively Europe's Washington, DC, and which has been under a state of high alert since the Paris attacks last November, including the apparently now permanent presence of military patrols on the streets. The attackers then chose two targets that are right next to what should surely have been more enticing targets for jihadists bent on avenging their fellow martyrs' deaths.

Note that the airport is just a couple of kms from NATO HQ. But the jihadists apparently weren't interested...

Note also that within a 200m range of Maalbeek metro station, the jihadists had a choice of targeting the US embassy, the European Parliament, the European Council building, and any number of European Commission buildings. But again, the jihadists apparently weren't interested, and preferred to attack civilians, which included (no doubt) Muslims. Remember, this is NATO and EU headquarters, the two organisations under which the bombing of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria have taken place.

[...]

This campaign of 'Islamic terrorism' in Europe seems, therefore, to be massively counter-productive to any agenda of liberation of the Middle East from NATO aggression. In fact, it directly facilitates further Western military meddling in the Middle East on the basis of 'dealing with the terror threat' and, as noted, justifies the implementation of police state measures in European society and 'lock downs' on the movement of ordinary people.

The capital is also the headquarters of the US-led NATO military alliance, whose stated aim is to maintain security in Europe.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel quickly declared the entire country on maximum security alert and relayed warnings from authorities for everyone including workers to "stay indoors or stay in place."

The Syria government forces have regained control of historic area of Palmyra, Syrian brigadier-general said.

"The Syrian army regained control of the historic town of Tadmur (Palmyra) with small weapons," a Syrian brigadier-general told Sputnik. Thus, he emphasized that the town was taken without air assistance.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, when mass anti-government protests against President Bashar Assad escalated to an armed confrontation between government troops and allied militia on the one hand, and Syrian opposition factions and radical Islamists on the other.

Secret US base in Iraq refutes the claim 'No boots on the ground'

Casket

A 27-year-old U.S. marine was killed this weekend by an ISIS rocket attack on a base that the American public didn't know existed. The death forced the Pentagon to reveal on Sunday—the 13th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War—that it was in the process of setting up a base for marines in Northern Iraq. The Pentagon had supposedly "planned to acknowledge" this escalation of U.S. forces in Iraq later this week, an unnamed defense official told CNN.

The base was attacked a second time on Monday, CNN reported.

The New York Times reported:
In a conference call with reporters, Colonel Warren said the Marines were not combat forces because they were positioned at the outpost to provide "force protection" to American military advisers working alongside Iraqi troops. "They won't kind of go off and conduct any type of mission on their own," he said, referring to the Marines. "They don't really have that capability anyways. They're just providing coverage, right? They're providing fire support coverage for the several thousand Iraqi soldiers and the several hundred advisers."
"Force protection" is military jargon for providing security. But the U.S. military has long contracted out its security in Iraq to foreign workers—a policy that has been met with harsh criticism from human rights and labor activists, among many others.

Comment: The base is known as Fire Base Bell. A military firebase or fire support base is a temporary military encampment (although some evolve into permanent bases) to provide artillery fire support to infantry operating in areas beyond the normal range of fire support from their own base camps. It is located several hundred meters from the the Iraqi base and obviously vulnerable.

Comment: How can you be in combat and not have "boots on the ground?" Here's how:

The actual number of US troops in Iraq, to avoid appearances of an expanding US combat mission, means there are units that do not appear on the books as ground troops due to the military's accounting system and how a soldier is "assigned." This plays into a subterfuge to the American public of keeping the number of "boots" in line with public rhetoric while continuing to grow military presence in the region.

In this case, there are about 200 marines to "guard" less than 100 advisors. Troops that rotate in and out of bases on short term assignments are not counted. Troops with dual abilities, such as working at an embassy, foreign military sales, defense support missions are not included, according to Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military headquarters in Baghdad. He stated the outpost had been kept a secret because the Pentagon wanted to give the Marines a chance to "become fully operational" and "ready to fight."

There are currently more than 4,000 US soldiers in Iraq and increasing. They call it "mission creep." Something's simmering behind the scenes and the public is not privy.

Best of the Web: Operation Gladio: State-sponsored terror - 1992 BBC documentary

gladio
Operation Gladio is undisputed historical fact. Gladio was part of a post-World War II program set up by the CIA and NATO supposedly to thwart future Soviet/communist invasions or influence in Italy and Western Europe. In fact, it became a state-sponsored right-wing terrorist network, involved in false flag operations and the subversion of democracy.

The existence of Gladio was confirmed and admitted by the Italian government in 1990, after a judge, Felice Casson, discovered the network in the course of his investigations into right-wing terrorism. Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti admitted Gladio's existence but tried to minimize its significance.

The main function of the Gladio-style groups, in the absence of Soviet invasion, seems to have been to discredit left-wing groups and politicians through the use of "the strategy of tension," including false-flag terrorism. The strategy of tension is a concept for control and manipulation of public opinion through the use of fear, propaganda, agents provocateurs, terrorism, etc. The aim was to instil fear into the populace while framing communist and left-wing political opponents for terrorist atrocities.

SOTT Focus: Former Israeli Intel Operatives Run Security at Brussels Airport

Brussels bombing
These 'jihadis' are going to have to try harder to terrify the people into accepting racism, fascism and a police state.
The aviation and general security services firm ICTS handles security operations at Brussels airport, the scene of a bomb attack yesterday morning.

ICTS was established in 1982 by former members of Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency and El Al airline security agents, and has a major presence around the world in airport security including operations in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Japan and Russia. ICTS uses the security system employed in Israel, whereby passengers are profiled to assess the degree to which they pose a potential threat on the basis of a number of indicators, including age, name, origin and behavior during questioning.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board at ICTS is Menachem J. Atzmon. Atzmon is a former Likud party member who was indicted and convicted in 1996 in a fraud and embezzlement case relating to the misappropriation of funds raised by charities. Atzmon is also the CEO of the port authority of Rostock in Germany.

This will not, however, be the first time that ICTS has come under scrutiny for possible security lapses leading to a 'Muslim terror attack'.

Nixon's chief advisor confesses real reason for drug war was to criminalize blacks and hippies

John Daniel Ehrlichman was counsel and domestic policy chief to President Richard Nixon. He was a key figure in events leading to the Watergate first break-in and the ensuing Watergate scandal, for which he was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury and served a year and a half in prison.

Aside from the conspiracy of Watergate, which when compared to today's politicians seems like schoolyard pranks, Ehrlichman, while serving under Nixon, was part of a much larger, and far more detrimental conspiracy that is still playing out today — the war on drugs.

In a new report, in Harper's Magazine, written by Dan Baum, Ehrlichman comes clean on the real reason behind the war on drugs — to criminalize blacks and hippies.

According to Baum, he tracked down Ehrlichman in 1994 at his engineering firm in Atlanta, Georgia.
"You want to know what this was really all about?" Ehrlichman bluntly asked Baum of the war on drugs. "The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
According to Baum, that was the end of the conversation, "he looked at his watch, handed me a signed copy of his steamy spy novel, The Company, and led me to the door," recalls Baum.

While world focuses on Brussels bombings, Turkish terror state bombs Kurds in Iraq

Turkish military said it launched airstrikes on PKK militants in northern Iraq on Tuesday , Reuters said. At least 13 Turkish fighter jets reportedly took part in the operation. The army hit shelters, caves and ammunition depots used by PKK fighters in northern Iraq and in areas near the town of Semdinli, in the Hakkari province of southeast Turkey, the statement from the Turkish military said. Turkey believes the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) is a terrorist organization, and Ankara has blamed the Kurdish separatist group for a number of recent terrorist attacks in the country. The Turkish military has repeatedly hit PKK targets in northern Iraq in recent months.

Earlier in March, Turkish warplanes bombed camps belonging to the PKK in the north of Iraq. Also in March, the Turkish Air Force bombed at least five PKK targets in different locations in Iraq, with Ankara claiming 67 militants were killed. On December 9, 10 Turkish F-16 fighter jets targeted Kurdish positions in northern Iraq, with the Turkish military saying that its targets were "destroyed in an aerial campaign." In December 2015, Ankara deployed about 150 soldiers and 25 tanks to Iraq's Nineveh province, without asking permission from Baghdad. Ankara argued that its soldiers were sent to northern Iraq to counter a threat from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) to Turkish military instructors training anti-terrorist forces in the area.

Comment: Erdogan wants anyone who supports groups like the Kurds in their struggle for self-determination to be deemed terrorists. Turkey' activities in northern Iraq show desire for more regime change in Baghdad with NATO help, and could lead to war between the countries.

More Islamophobia: Ted Cruz responds to Brussels attack by calling for special patrols of Muslim neighborhoods

Texas Senator Ted Cruz called for law enforcement in the U.S. to clamp down on Muslim neighborhoods in an effort to stop them from becoming "radicalized" after the terror attacks in Brussels.

The GOP presidential contender came right out of the box Tuesday morning calling for President Obama to immediately return from Cuba in order to deal with the crisis in Belgium that claimed dozens of lives.

In a statement posted to his Facebook account, Cruz criticized European nations for allowing migrants into their countries, saying, "Our European allies are now seeing what comes of a toxic mix of migrants who have been infiltrated by terrorists and isolated, radical Muslim neighborhoods."

Does it make any difference?: The ICC may charge Benjamin Netanyahu with war crimes in Palestine

Israeli tank
© EFEA child looks at an Israeli tank near Gaza, July, 2006. The International Criminal Court will consider Palestine's claim that Israel is guilty of war crimes.
The cases, brought to the court by several legal and activist groups, include wide-ranging charges of war crimes against Israel. A Palestinian delegation presented documents to the International Criminal Court to try Israel - and possibly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - for war crimes.

The delegation, acting on behalf of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority, recounted the history of Israeli settlements and presented cases against Israeli operations in Hebron and East Jerusalem. Its claims spanned from water deprivation to environmental damage to abuse of Palestinian prisoners. The Dawabsha family, killed in their sleep during a firebombing, and Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a teenager kidnapped and burned alive, were brought up as specific cases of war crimes.
