Moscow lists Western-backed Levada polling organization as foreign agent

levada
Russia's Justice Ministry says its decision to place the independent national pollster the Levada Center on its official register of organizations "operating as foreign agents" was made due to financial support the pollster received from the United States.

TASS news agency quoted the ministry as saying on September 6 that "the major part of financial support the Levada Center has received is from the United States, including the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and therefore it was added to the list of 'foreign agents.'"

The Russian Justice Ministry announced on September 5 that it had placed the Levada Center on its official register of organizations "operating as foreign agents," potentially threatening the existence of the widely respected research group.

Comment: Russia's "foreign agent" law should be replicated in every country. U.S. NGOs and U.S.-backed NGOs are tools of empire, plain and simple.

EU facing major change as anti-migrant and anti-Islam views ascend throughout Europe

Photo
An EU summit without the UK prime minister on 16 September in Bratislava will kick off the discussions on the EU's future. The summit is «informal», because the UK has not yet left the Union, but its prime minister is not invited. Slovakia, whose positions on Europe's migration policies have diverged sharply from those of the Commission and western European powers, holds the EU's rotating Council presidency.

The decision to meet outside Brussels is intended to send a signal that Eastern European countries will be given more of a say on issues that have traditionally been the domain of core European powers like the UK, France, Germany and Italy. The EU members are divided over how to move forward. Some countries, led by France, Germany and Italy, have pushed for greater integration among EU countries, while others — especially in Eastern Europe — said there was a need to go slow. According to Belgian Prime Minister Charles, Michel countries that want to integrate more quickly should "be able to do so without being hindered by those who choose to take a bit more time to advance."

Member states in Central and Eastern Europe are suspicious of such moves towards a "two-speed" Europe.

How Russia and China could strike the US Air Force's 'Achilles Heel' in the Pacific

A new generation of Russian and Chinese-built long-range air-to-air missiles could threaten the critical nodes that enable U.S. air operations. Those nodes include the AWACS, various intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets, aerial refueling tankers and electronic attack aircraft.

While often overlooked in favor of advanced anti-ship and surface-to-air missile systems when examining Russian and Chinese anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) capabilities, such long-range air intercept weapons—coupled with the right fighter—could cut the sinews that allow the United States to conduct sustained air operations in both the Asia-Pacific and the European theatres. Essentially, Russians and/or Chinese forces could pair long-range air-to-air missiles with aircraft like the Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound, Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA and the Chengdu J-20 to attack American AWACS, JTARS and aerial refueling tankers like the Boeing KC-135 or forthcoming KC-46 Pegasus. Especially over the vast reaches of the Pacific where airfields are few and far between, lumbering aerial refueling tankers could be an Achilles' Heel that Beijing could chose to exploit. There are three long-range air-to-air missile programs that bear watching—the Russian Vympel R-37M RVV-BD, the Novator KS-172 (aka K-100) and the Chinese PL-15.

Mexico's Finance Minister resigns in wake of controversial Trump visit

Mexican Finance Minister Luis Videgaray

Mexican Finance Minister Luis Videgaray, seen as the right-hand man to President Enrique Peña Nieto, has resigned and will be replaced by a former finance chief José Antonio Meade.

Mr. Videgaray's resignation comes less than a week after a controversial visit to Mexico by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, which was widely seen as a humiliation for Mexico and its president. Multiple local media reports said the invitation to Mr. Trump was Mr. Videgaray's idea, a claim disputed by him as well as Mr. Peña Nieto.

Mr. Videgaray, a former investment banker and state finance official, won't take a public post for the time being, Finance Ministry spokeswoman Claudia Algorri said.

Syrian war: Putin on top of the developments, Obama in gridlock

Syrian Crisis

Commenting on the recent developments in Syria and Presidents Putin and Obama debating the issue at the G20 Summit in China, former senior French intelligence officer Alain Rodier suggested that while the Turkish operation came as a total surprise to the US, President Putin might have been warned beforehand and is now on top of the situation.

Following his meeting with the US president on Monday on the sidelines of G20 meeting, Vladimir Putin said that he had "grounds to believe" that results on Syria may be achieved "within the next few days", however specifying no details of his talks with Barack Obama.

The French news site Atlantico sat down with former French intelligence senior officer, director of the French Center for Research and Intelligence (CF2R) Alain Rodier to find out what could have given the Russian leader such a certainty.

"Undeniably, the Americans are the biggest losers in the latest developments in Syria since Turkey has launched its 'Shield of the Euphrates' operation," former French intelligence senior officer told the website.

Comment: This last line sounds like more bitter bluster from another American "analyst" who still feels compelled to lump Assad in with the acts of terrorists - when the worst of the parties involved sit only a few feet away from him.

Sick! Egyptian MP calls on women to accept genital mutilation to 'reduce sexual appetite'

A member of Egyptian parliament called on women to agree to female genital mutilation, or FGM, in order to "reduce their sexual appetites," local media reported. He also allegedly cited Egyptian men's high rate of consumption of sexual stimulants.

Elhamy Agina, also in hot water in June this year after comments suggesting that women should dress more modestly in the Egyptian parliament, this time openly defended the procedure of female genital mutilation, a centuries-old tradition common in many African states. The procedure requires the intentional removal of some or all female external genitalia for non-medical reasons.

The 'operation' is often conducted by a charlatan healer on girls while they are still toddlers using a razor blade and no anesthetic.

"We are a population whose men suffer from sexual weakness, which is evident because Egypt is among the biggest consumers of sexual stimulants that only the weak will consume," Agina reportedly said, as cited by Parlmany news outlet. "If we stop [female genital mutilation], we will need strong men and we don't have men of that sort," the MP allegedly declared.

He also suggested that it would be better for women to undergo the procedure as it "reduces a woman's sexual appetite" and women must "stand by their men" so that Egyptian husbands and wives live in concord.

The ritual procedure, dating back thousands of years, is still widespread in Egypt, despite having been outlawed in 2008 with Article 242 of the Penal Code criminalizing the practice. Last week, Egypt's cabinet approved a bill which increases jail terms for people who perform FGM and those who escort girls to the practice.

Putin's prophesies keep coming true, so when he speaks pay attention!

Putin
© Sputnik/ Alexei Druzhinin
On June 4, 2014 Vladimir Putin was interviewed on Radio Europe 1 and Channel TF1. Kiev's "anti-terrorist operation" in the Donbass had been going on for two months, a Normandy Four meeting was two days away, and Poroshenko's inauguration was three days away. The Syrian blitzkrieg and Minsk accords were a long way off.

Warning to Poroshenko: halt Kiev's anti-terrorist operation and start negotiations with the Donbass
Poroshenko, who as yet had no blood on his hands, had a unique chance to halt the punitive operation and start a dialogue with the people of southeastern Ukraine.
The interview took place on June 4, 2014, almost three months before the defeat of Ukrainian troops near the city of Ilovaisk and eight months before the Debaltsevo disaster. Unfortunately, Poroshenko didn't seize the chance, and as a result, the Minsk Accords in which the global community ordered Ukraine to begin a direct dialogue with the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics, were signed in February 2015.

Warning to NATO:
Russia has a modern, efficient military, and we plan to rearm it based on advanced technology, reducing quantity and improving quality. Our rearmament program was not adopted yesterday, or in response to the Ukrainian crisis, and we will continue to implement it.
NATO and the Pentagon ignored Putin's words spoken more than a year before the Russian Air Force came to Syria. Now they're probably sorry.

Top Saudi Arabian Mufti: Iranians aren't Muslims - Iran: Actually, we're not bigoted Wahhabi extremists

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
© Lucas Jackson / ReutersIranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the religion of Iran and most of the Muslim world is nothing like that of Saudi Arabian Wahhabis.
"Indeed; no resemblance between Islam of Iranians & most Muslims & bigoted extremism that Wahhabi top cleric & Saudi terror masters preach," Zarif posted on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
Zarif made the remark in response to a top Wahhabi cleric saying that Iranians were not Muslims.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al ash-Sheikh told an Arabic language newspaper that Iranians are not Muslims and have a deep animosity towards Sunnis.

The Mufti's remarks were made after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei criticized those in charge of Hajj over last year's Mina tragedy.

Comment: It appears the Saudi Grand Mufti was not so subtly implying that Iranian deaths in the Mina tragedy were of no consequence because they do not consider Iranians to be Muslim, which makes Zarif's statement all the more valid.

The various incarnations of Kurdistan projects

Kurdish General Saladin
The Kurds are an integral part of Syrian society. This is the statue of Kurdish General Saladin the Magnificent at the entry to the old city of Damascus. He liberated Damascus in 1174 and founded the dynasty of the Ayyoubids.
The current Kurdistan project, supported by France and the United States, has no connection with the legitimate project which was recognised by the same countries during the Sèvres Conference of 1920. It is not even situated anywhere near the same territory! This pseudo-Kurdistan is no more than a Western bribe intended to turn the Syrian Kurds against Damascus. Its creation will not solve the Kurdish question, and would provoke a conflict similar to that which has opposed Israël and Palestine for close to 70 years. In order to untangle the present situation, Thierry Meyssan retraces the contradictory positions of the nine main external powers implicated in this affair.

The displacement of forces and the summer battles in the North of Syria may seem incoherent to some observers, yet each force present continues to pursue its own objectives with tenacity.

While all the protagonists declared that they were fighting Daesh, the Islamic Emirate moved, but only retreated in the desert. The true goal of these events is the eventual creation of a Kurdistan to the detriment of the Arab and Christian inhabitants [1].

Here is an analysis of the war goals of the main forces present - but let us first note that Syria is a sovereign state, and none of the protagonists listed here have any right whatsoever to amputate it in order to create a new entity.

Nine responses to the Kurdish question, seven of which are illegal
