Soldiers suspected of being involved in the coup attempt are escorted by policemen to a courthouse in Marmaris, Turkey.
Justice minister confirms arrests of almost half of the 70,000 people investigated following July's failed coup attempt.

Turkish courts have placed 32,000 suspects under arrest on charges of links to a group run by US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is blamed for the July 15 coup, the justice minister said.

Bekir Bozdag told Turkey's NTV television on Wednesday that 70,000 people had been investigated after the coup and of them 32,000 remanded in custody.

"This process is continuing," he said. The numbers of those arrested marks an increase of more than 10,000 from those previously given by the government. Bozdag said that there could be new arrests, while some of those currently arrested could still be freed under judicial control or freed entirely.

Comment: The U.S. has dragged its feet for months over extraditing Gulen, despite the mountain of evidence Turkey has provided regarding his organization's involvement in the attempt to overthrow the Erdogan government. The CIA asset has friends in very high places.

How to build a terror-state: US in Syria

Syrian Rebels

A nation is its institutions, and should those institutions weaken, the nation itself will be weakened. And should those institutions be destroyed, the nation, for all intents and purposes, will also be destroyed.

A dramatic example of how to destroy a nation unfolded in 2003 in Iraq as a US led axis invaded and occupied it, intentionally targeting and destroying Iraqi institutions and essential infrastructure, including the police, military, and the government as well as bridges, electricity, and communications.

In the ruins left in the wake of the US-led invasion, through the "Coalition Provisional Authority," US and European corporations were invited in to not only rebuild these institutions and infrastructure, but to do so in a manner making them dependent on and profitable to US-European corporate-financier interests well into the foreseeable future.

US strikes Deir Ezzur again, destroying critical bridges

The US-led coalition warplanes
The US-led coalition warplanes launched airstrikes on two main bridges on the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province, days after they killed at least 90 Syrian soldiers in an air assault in the same region in Southeastern Syria
The state news agency's reporter in Deir Ezzur said Wednesday that the air raids destroyed al-Asharah Bridge that links the river's two banks in the Eastern part of the province in Southeastern Syria, only few hours after demolishing al-Mayadin Bridge in the same region near the border with Iraq.

The reporter added that the destruction of the two bridges has been aimed at disconnecting the regions on the two eastern and western banks of the river.

The US-led coalition warplanes targeted the Syrian army troops near the city of Deir Ezzur on September 17, leaving over 90 military personnel dead and a hundred wounded.

Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed a report by the Syrian state news agency that an ISIL offensive began right after Syrian Army positions were hit by the bombers of the US-led coalition.

Corbyn vows not to limit immigration in UK if elected PM amid warnings of post-Brexit riots if immigration isn't cut

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn will tell conference delegates on Wednesday he will not limit immigration into Britain if he takes power. However, his former shadow secretary, Rachel Reeves, has warned uncurbed migrant numbers could lead to riots.

In his keynote speech during this year's Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Corbyn is to announce plans to reinstate the multimillion-pound funds to support local communities dealing with immigration.

However, the 'migrants welcome' message has not been warmly welcomed by party MPs. Even frontbencher Andy Burnham says his party must "face up fully" to the fact that Britain has "voted for a change on immigration" in the EU referendum.

Corbyn will close the party conference by saying "a Labour government will not offer false promises," in what is understood to be a dig at Tory Prime Minister Theresa May's failure to meet her pledge as home secretary to curb net-migration.

"We will not sow division or fan the flames of fear. We will instead tackle the real issues of immigration - and make the real changes that are needed," Corbyn is expected to tell MPs and conference delegates, in what is his second conference as leader of the Labour Party.

A number of planned terrorist attacks on sporting events, schools and religious sites on the French Riviera have been foiled since the tragedy in Nice in which 86 people were killed in July, a French prosecutor has said.

Authorities in France thwarted as many as five cases of terrorist plots that sought to target various sites, Prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre said in a documentary titled Deradicalized to be shown on France 3.

"Several cases have been passed on to the anti-terrorism prosecutor in Paris. It was about religious sites, during certain celebrations, sporting events, stadiums, schools," said Pretre.

The foiled attacks involved "people who started to articulate things that are rather precise about a type of target or even a specific target," the prosecutor was quoted as saying.

On Monday, Pretre said that as many as 70 cases related to terrorism or radicalization had been investigated since the attack in Nice in July.

The US Empire has been unmasked - it's time to speak out

Why Are We The Good Guys? is the title of a brilliant 2012 book by David Cromwell of the media monitoring organization, Media Lens. The book challenges the dominant elite orthodoxy that whatever "mistakes" they may make, the US and its closest allies always mean well - and are an undoubted force for good in the world.

Well, that might have been true in World War Two, when the US, the Soviet Union, Britain and others were fighting the Nazis, but I wonder if there's anyone out there (and whose salary isn't paid by the US defense industry, NATO, George Soros or Rupert Murdoch), who would still claim that the US — and its closest allies — are benign actors in international affairs?

It's not just the effects of the Iraq war — an illegal conflict in which blatant lies about WMDs were told in order to justify a brutal invasion which led to the death of one million people and the rise of Daesh, also known as ISIL. In the past few weeks, we've had a number of reminders as to what the 21 century "US Empire" is really about — and the shamefully duplicitous way in which it operates.

The Islamic State's (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) infamous French speaker, Rachid Kassim, was found distributing details, including pictures, of several Belgian soldiers to hundreds of his contacts in what authorities believed to be an incitement to terrorism.

According to the Belgian La Dernière Heure and Het Laatste Nieuws newspapers, Kassim sent the information to his network of around 300 people through the encrypted messaging service Telegram.

The message, entitled "orders to brothers of Belgium," also included soldiers' details taken from their social networks.

The authorities requested that the media refrain for 24 hours from publishing the sensitive information. A Belgian Ministry of Defense spokesperson confirmed that a "very serious" inquiry was now taking place and "being closely monitored by army intelligence services."

The U.S. wants to corner Russia - a move it's sure to regret

The US-inspired and assisted coup in 2014 that toppled the (admittedly incompetent) Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was most effective. As observed at the time by the analyst Seamus Milne, "after two decades of eastward Nato expansion, this crisis was triggered by the west's attempt to pull Ukraine decisively into its orbit and defence structure, via an explicitly anti-Moscow EU association agreement. Its rejection led to the Maidan protests and the installation of an anti-Russian administration - rejected by half the country - that went on to sign the EU and International Monetary Fund agreements regardless."

Alas for ordinary Ukrainians, who are normal decent people like so many citizens of the world, their country is suffering from the machinations of the Washington Establishment, whose representatives for the region in 2014 were Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt. Both have advanced in their careers and are expected to be given important appointments when the compassionate and internationally benevolent Hillary Clinton ("We came; We saw; He died) comes to power next January. Their implacably anti-Moscow intrigues have paid off and they can be justifiably proud of their successful efforts to steer the world closer to nuclear war, which is becoming increasingly likely as a result of massive US-NATO confrontation with Russia.

But the team of Clinton, Nuland and Pyatt can't take all the praise for the provocations and the crisis. A considerable amount of commendation for increasing tension and hatred must go to a most unlikely player in world affairs : Stand up and be admired, the vice-president of the United States, Joseph Biden.

Comment: Ironically, it's Russia that has been scrupulous about not putting the U.S. in a corner, always till now, offering a face-saving out when the Empire overreaches itself. That time may be coming to an end.

Commander of FSA terrorists: Foreign states supplying us with new Grad rockets in response to Russian-backed Aleppo offensive

Foreign states have supplied Syrian rebels with surface-to-surface Grad rockets in response to the Russian-backed offensive in Aleppo, according to Fares al-Bayoush, rebel commander of the Free Syrian Army.

Rockets for the Grad BM-21 multilaunch systems with ranges of 22km and 40km have recently been supplied in "excellent quantities," Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday, citing Colonel al-Bayoush. The colonel did not specify exactly how many rockets had been received.

Al-Bayoush claims the rockets are to be used on battlefronts in Aleppo, Hama and the coastal region of Syria, adding that this type of ammunition had not previously been supplied to the rebel forces. He said, however, that the rebels are already using Grad rocket stocks they had previously captured from Syrian Army reserves.

Comment: ‌This seems to be the answer to the senator's recent question to the military about how to establish a "no-fly zone" in Syria.

Moderator bias: Lester Holt exclusively asked Trump 15 questions during presidential debate, while only asking 2 questions to Killary

A close analysis of the transcript of the first presidential debate on Monday night shows that moderator Lester Holt of NBC News asked 15 questions exclusively of Republican nominee Donald Trump, and only 2 questions exclusively of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

The analysis, posted on social media and drawing intense attention on Reddit, walks through the entire 90-minute exchange and notes Holt asked six questions of both candidates, in addition to Trump's 15 and Clinton's two.

Holt, a newcomer to presidential debate moderation, faced intense pressure from the Clinton campaign and the mainstream media to be tough on Trump. Some explicitly called for Holt to "fact-check" Trump — the implication being that Trump is more ignorant or dishonest — and implied that he would face the same fate as NBC's Matt Lauer and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, both of whom were slammed by liberal media critics for the crime of treating both candidates fairly.

Moreover, most of Holt's questions prompts were overly friendly to Clinton's point of view, while hostile to Trump. In one of the last exchanges of the debate, for example, Holt strongly implied Trump was a sexist when asking about a past criticism he had made about Clinton lacking a "presidential look." He also introduced the opening topic of the debate by praising Obama's economic performance, ignoring the fact that growth never reached 3% under Obama and labor force participation has fallen.

Breitbart News noted that Holt intervened several times to "fact-check" Trump — often erroneously — while never checking Clinton's facts, even when she was completely wrong, as in her claim that she had never flip-flopped on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. In addition, the Washington Examiner's Eddie Scarry notes Holt asked Trump six follow-up questions, and none of Clinton, leaving Trump "having to debate the highly anticipated event's moderator as well as his Democratic opponent."

Comment: It should have been clear to anyone watching that Lester Holt was biased against Trump.
