Russian President Vladimir Putin has commented on the recent win of France's Francois Fillon in the first round of the center-right party's presidential primary, saying that his "personal relations" with Fillon have shown the politician to be a "decent man."

"We worked together with Francois when he headed the French government, and I chaired the [Russian] government ... we had a lot of meetings, and have developed certain personal relations, very kind ones," Putin told reporters on Wednesday.

The French presidential hopeful, whose convincing win in the Sunday primary took many by surprise, is "very much different" from world politicians, Putin said.

Trump picks Michigan Republican Betsy DeVos to be Secretary of Education

President-elect Donald Trump will nominate Michigan philanthropist and chair of the education organization American Federation of Children Elisabeth 'Betsy' DeVos to be his Secretary of Education.

Trump called his pick "a brilliant and passionate education advocate. Under her leadership we will reform the U.S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families," the president-elect said in a statement.

DeVos is a former chair of the Michigan Republican Party who has never worked in public education. Her children attended private Christian schools. As the chairwoman of American Federation of Children, she is a proponent of the school choice movement, which calls for vouchers that allow families to use federal funds to cover the cost of education at private schools.

She is also in favor of charter schools, but not of state regulation of them. Michigan's charter schools are among the least regulated in the country, thanks to the DeVos family influence, Chalkbeat reported.

"There are a lot of schools that are doing poorly and charter authorizers do not seem to be taking the necessary actions to either improve performance or close those underperforming charters," current US Secretary of Education John King told Chalkbeat about Michigan in October. If confirmed, DeVos would replace King, who was confirmed in March 2016.

What does the president-elect think about climate change?

Who even knows anymore?

Speaking at the offices of The New York Timeson Tuesday, Donald J. Trump appeared to vacillate on, and sometimes even disagree with, previous statements about climate change made by Donald J. Trump. He even seemed ready to grant that climate change exists.

"I think there is some connectivity" between humans and the changing climate, he told the Times reporters and editors, according to Maggie Haberman.

Europe Brands RT, Sputnik 'Dangerous Propaganda' As Merkel Declares War On 'Fake News'

Picking up the torch on the most hotly debated topic by the humiliated US mainstream media, namely the spread of so-called "fake news" (not to be confused with Brian Williams lying for years on prime time TV, and which until recently was branded far simply as "conspiracy theory"), German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Wednesday against the power of fake news on social media to roil the establishment and to spur the rise of populists, after launching her campaign for a fourth term.

Speaking in parliament for the first time since her announcement Sunday that she would seek re-election next year, Merkel cautioned that public opinion was being "manipulated" on the internet.

"Something has changed -- as globalisation has marched on, (political) debate is taking place in a completely new media environment. Opinions aren't formed the way they were 25 years ago," she said.

Quoted by France 24, she said that "Today we have fake sites, bots, trolls -- things that regenerate themselves, reinforcing opinions with certain algorithms and we have to learn to deal with them."

The chancellor said the challenge for democrats was to "reach and inspire people. However, should that fail, Merkel essentially suggested the time for censorship has come: "we must confront this phenomenon and if necessary, regulate it."

Finland launches anti-hybrid warfare center to target imaginary Russian threat

finland cyber warfare
As the anti-Russian sentiment is seething in swaths of Europe, Finland is all set to open a center against hybrid threats together with EU and NATO members. Whereas the name itself bears no clear allusions to Russia, it is Moscow that mostly is groundlessly accused of waging "hybrid wars" and "psychological warfare."

Earlier this year, traditionally non-aligned Sweden voiced its readiness to join Stratcom, the NATO center for strategic communications, as well as the Riga-based Center for Strategic Information. Recently, non-aligned Finland decided to follow in its neighbor Sweden's shoes and intensify its psychological defense against Russia's "crafty designs."

Next spring, a center against hybrid threats will be opened in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Besides Finland, which also aims to be the chief sponsor of the project, a number of EU and NATO member states are going to participate. Besides Finland, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Poland and the United States signaled a keen interest in joining the organization, Finnish daily Hufvudstadsbladet reported.

Comment: Never mind the Syrian conflict is five years old and the Russians have only been involved in the last year. Those sneaky Russians are sending refugees to Finland to subvert them!

Who will tell the people? Russian institute exposes Western media lies

Moscow-based Institute of Oriental Studies under the Russian Academy of Sciences (IVRAN) presented a devastating report about the lies of the Western mainstream media about Syria.

But this damning report is not getting the attention it deserves by the mainstream media in the West. However, that shouldn't come as a surprise. There are many facts in the Institute's report that would make sensations in the EU and the US, had they unmasked the Russian, and not the Western, media falsifications.

In a similar situation, there was a whole media frenzy in the US and EU media in 2014, when a Russian television channel released an interview with a woman refugee from the rebellious Eastern Ukraine, who provided the unconfirmed report about a local boy being crucified by Ukrainian government troops. Meanwhile, in its report, IVRAN proved much cruder, intentional falsifications on the side of the Western media reports about Syria.

Trump's selection of Nikki Haley for UN ambassador should ease Israel concerns

US President-elect Donald Trump's choice of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for next US ambassador to the United Nations should bring comfort to those concerned about the relationship between Israel and the organization, US Senator and former presidential candidate Lindsey Graham said in a statement on Wednesday.

Haley will be a strong voice for reform and for American interests around the world, Graham added.

"Governor Haley is a strong supporter of the State of Israel. Her presence as Ambassador will be reassuring to all those who are concerned about the increasing hostility of the United Nations toward Israel," Graham stated.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump named Haley as his nominee for US ambassador to the UN. Her nomination will have to be confirmed by the US Senate.

Graham ran against Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. He did not support Trump as the Republican nominee after dropping out of the race in December of 2015.

The Untold Story of Killary's Corrupt Haitian Earthquake Recovery Project

Hillary cheater
Donald Trump was the only presidential candidate who highlighted that the Clinton-backed earthquake recovery project in Haiti was an absolute disgrace, Dr. Dady Chery, a Haitian-born journalist, told Sputnik, adding that she believes that Haitian-Americans are not the only ones who voted for Trump to see the Clintons brought to justice.

Donald Trump won't appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton, as he promised back in October, the US President-elect's aide signaled Tuesday.

โ€‹"I think when the President-elect, who's also the head of your party, tells you before he's even inaugurated that he doesn't wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message, tone and content," Kellyanne Conway, former Trump's campaign manager, told MSNBC as quoted by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The question then arises, whether controversial episodes such as, for example, the Clintons' role in the recovery project in Haiti back in 2010, will be simply swept under the rug.

British ex-foreign secretary Hague: Trump is 'a joke' who has offended every US ally

Hague
© Your News WireFormer Tory Foreign Secretary William Hague
In electing Donald Trump, the US has handed power to 'a joke' who offends everybody he meets, according to former Tory Foreign Secretary William Hague. Hague, who served as Tory leader from 1997 to 2001, blasted his fellow conservative in a speech at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday night.

"The last time I was here I did tell you a lot of jokes and stories about politics, but the trouble now with political jokes is that they have started to get elected," he told the audience.

To illustrate his point, Hague read out a fictional letter addressed to him from Trump.
"You all know that I believe in the special relationship with your country, which is just as well as I've already pissed off most of the others," the letter lampooned. "And you also know I am committed to building the biggest wall ever to keep out Mexicans, which is where you come in โ€” and they don't," it went on. "So God bless America, God bless our wall and God bless the voters, who will believe anything," it finished.
In January, after Trump said Muslims would be banned from entering the US, a petition to ban him from the UK gained over 500,000 signatures.

The government ruled against a ban, although then-Home Secretary Theresa May's spokesperson said "coming to the UK is a privilege and not a right and she will continue to use the powers available to prevent from entering the UK those who seek to harm our society and who do not share our basic values.

"Exclusion powers are very serious and are not used lightly. The Home Secretary will use these powers when justified and based on all available evidence."

Now prime minister, Theresa May has announced plans for a state visit by President-elect Trump to the UK at the earliest opportunity.

Comment: Apparently Trump did not offend everyone he met; he was elected. The global paradigm will change, no matter what others think. So be it as it has to be. Hague, a biased person who thinks he isn't, has lowered himself to the level he professes to detest - - a 'political joke.' That Trump 'offended' one of the self-righteous war-mongering elite - - 'right' on target.
