Guess who's number one? Ten countries more threatening to world peace than North Korea

North Korea does not pose a critical threat to the world. But these countries have done and still very much do.

North Korea is often portrayed as a rogue state which endangers the region and according to some, the world. But North Korea has not engaged in a hot conflict since the ceasefire which ended the Korean War in 1953. There is little evidence that North Korea is actually as menacing as it often pretends to be, let alone as menacing as others claim it is.

The same cannot be said for the following 10 countries.

SOTT Focus: Behind the Headlines: Facts Intrude on the Reality Creators: The Rapid Decline of the American Empire

trump on presidency
While he campaigned on removing corruption from Washington politics and dialing back on US military aggression overseas, Trump appears to have learned a few hard lessons in his 1st 100 days in office. The US 'deep state' cannot be so easily dismantled, and it appears Trump has been forced to concede to the reality that, since America was built on the domination of other nations, it must continue to dominate if it is to survive in its current form.

But those pesky concepts - reality and facts - keep intruding on the dream of a New American Century. From Syria to North Korea (and everywhere in between) the US is being thwarted by the relatively quiet and unshakable resolve of Russia and China to assert their right to international preeminence as the largest and most populous nations on the planet. More to the point, the 'center' of the globe is clearly Eurasia, while America sits isolated from this center by the world's two largest oceans.

This week on Behind the Headlines, we'll be bringing you an across-the-board update on the general state of the world, what's hot, what's not, and what the near future is likely to bring, politically, militarily, socially and environmentally.

Lawyer calls Alex Jones 'Cult leader' in bitter custody battle over children

Right-wing conspiracy theorist and Infowars host Alex Jones was described as a "cult leader" who brainwashed his children into "cult followers" by his ex-wife's lawyer during a bitter custody battle.

Comment: So much for RT being at one with Infowars in the 'alt-right' Kremlin-controlled propaganda campaign that is corrupting Western values! Moving right along...

No doubt Jones' loyal followers - or rather 'fans' - will take offense to the label, delivered by Kelly Jones' attorney, during closing statements in the pair's court battle over their three kids.

Comment: If Jones has been as atrocious a father as they've portrayed, he wouldn't be allowed near the kids again. Clearly they are weighing in hard against him, though one wonders if there's at least some basis in truth to the picture they've painted. Here's Alex Jones statement regarding the custody battle, which contradicts the mainstream media's sensationalist headlines:

Who is arming radical militants in Syria and Iraq?

Syrian rebels
The Western coalition's struggle against the notorious Islamic State terrorist organization stands at the edge of one thousand days of military operations against. A thousand days ago, American warplanes opened a new chapter in its Middle Eastern military campaigns, by launching an attack against terrorist positions in Iraq, and then in Syria.

A thousand days and and a thousand nights - is an immense amount of time in terms of modern warfare, when the geopolitical situation dictates a rapid course of action. This is especially true in the Middle East, where in the past three years there have been unprecedented changes in the alignment of forces and interests.

Trump's new Sec of Labor let billionaire Jeffrey Epstein off "with a wrist slap"

Alexander Acosta, Jeffrey Epstein
Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, confirmed to the position Thursday by the U.S. Senate, is one in a string of disputed appointees to President Trump's Cabinet, but this contention doesn't concern his politics, rather, it's centered on his lax treatment of billionaire pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein.

And former Green Party candidate and U.S. Representative, Cynthia McKinney, is none too pleased with the confirmation, tweeting shortly after the news,

"He let Jeffrey Epstein off pedophilia charges with a wristslap; now he's Trump's SecLabor...."

Lunatic Russophobe Louise Mensch is slapped down by Julian Assange

Assange set the record straight...again

Julian Assange recently went on Ron Paul's Liberty Report to defend himself against inaccurate statements from CIA director Mike Pompeo who said that Wikileaks is a non-state intelligence agency, when in fact Wikileaks is a publisher. The theory proliferated by Pompeo was legally discredited during the infamous Bradley Manning trial.

In this sense, Wikileaks is no different from the Washington Post or New York Times, except of course that Wikileaks has a 100% accuracy rating in terms of what it publishes, whilst WaPo and the Times have a considerably more fraught relationship with the truth.

Comment: More Mensch crazy:

Best of the Web: From Syria to Korea: The American Empire's Rush to Crush Multipolarism

American Empire
A recent, unilateral, unjustified military strike on Syria by US cruise missiles, coupled with the deployment of a US naval fleet to the Korean Peninsula as well as terrorist attacks carried out by terrorist fronts worldwide associated with US-backed opposition groups signifies a worldwide push-back from Wall Street and Washington amid its crumbling "international order."

Like all hegemons before it, Wall Street and Washington have found themselves expending more time and resources maintaining their current geopolitical order than on either further expansion or domestic development. What has developed is a vicious cycle of aggression, conflict, and retrenchment. Throughout the process, there is the expenditure of irreplaceable political capital.

For example, while US policymakers rightly noted their "international order" built by and for Wall Street and Washington would suffer immensely had their attempts to overthrow the Libyan government in 2011 been reversed, their "success" was equally damaging. Before an increasingly capable world of alternative systems, blocs and an emerging multipolar order, the destruction of Libya and its current status as a failed state along with the protracted nature of the US campaign to topple the government was more a sign of growing weakness than a warning of American strength.

The Purge Continues: Turkey's emergency crackdown claims additional 4,000 jobs

Erdogan referendum
New emergency decrees in Turkey have resulted in the firing of an estimated additional 4,000 people, as well as the banning of several popular TV shows and the widespread withdrawal of funding for students and health services in the country.

According to state-run media agency Anadolu, the administration of Turkish President Reccip Tayyip Erdogan has recently issued two new 'KHK' emergency measures, firing 3,974 people from state-run institutions, including 484 members from the academic sphere.

Earlier this month, the power of the executive office was increased through a referendum vote promoted by the country's leadership.

NATO mission creep: The road to Russia reaches Montenegro

This week's vote by Montenegro's parliament to ratify the protocol for the tiny Balkan nation's ascension into the NATO alliance was a cruel irony.

Less than 20 years ago, during the Kosovo War, when the country was still part of Serbia, NATO jets were pounding Montenegro with depleted uranium bombs. Those bombs caused long-term damage to the nation's health, which doctors today have linked to increases in systemic cancers among the population. Unsurprisingly, there remains some deeply anti-NATO feeling in the country today — and NATO membership is a hugely divisive issue.

Nonetheless, Montenegro's government decided to forgo a referendum on NATO membership, denying the country's citizens any say in the matter.

'Euro is dead': Le Pen eyes return of the Franc, preserving single currency for international trade

A week before the 2nd round of the French election, eurosceptic presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen has reminded her supporters that the "euro is dead" and should be left only for international trade, while France should regain control and reintroduce the Franc.

"We need to control the currency, to adjust it to the economy because today the single currency is a burden," Le pen said ahead of May 7 French presidential election, stressing that the "euro is dead."

"We will have a national currency like all other countries, and we will have a common currency together," Le Pen said in in an interview with Le Parisien.

Comment: Polls, schmolls, whatever! In reality, Le Pen most probably has a commanding lead.
