Question

Was Russia probing the US electoral systems?

The most recent Russiagate expose comes from The Intercept, which was founded by Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill. The site has been the source of a number of stories that rely on stolen or leaked government documents, including material from Edward Snowden. It has also produced some exemplary investigative reporting on U.S. government high crimes and misdemeanors of various kinds, including its account of the Obama Administration assassination program and, more recently, the misrepresentation by the White House of the military action in Yemen that killed an American Navy Seal.

The article appeared yesterday and is entitled Top-Secret NSA Report Details Russian Hacking Effort Days Before the 2016 Election. The report mentioned is dated May 5. The leaker, an NSA contractor named Reality Leigh Winner, working out of Georgia, came to the attention of the authorities after The Intercept contacted the NSA and asked for comments before it ran the article. It was asked not to run the piece, but was willing to redact some material at the request of the government. Winner was identified by microdot keys on the paper that led to the copier she had used. She has been arrested and charged under the Espionage Act and is the first Trump-era leaker to be prosecuted.

Comment: According to the analyst' judgement in the NSA report, the accusation of Russia hacking the election amounts to unfounded speculation, nor are there any examples of their alleged handy work from which to pick. More curious would be the exploration of motives and actions by the DNC, as perpetrated on Mr. Sanders and Mr. Trump, that continue to be camouflaged by a fake cover story as looming as 'Russia hacked the election'. The Score: Russian hack - zero. Subversive activity by the Democrats and their candidate - so far, unending.

Allegations intensify: Iran's supreme leader calls US' fight against ISIS 'a lie'

Khamenei

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has claimed Washington is lying about fighting terrorism in the Middle East, saying US activity has instead given rise to Islamic State. Tehran's foreign minister says the US has not honored the nuclear deal.

"You [the United States] and your agents are the source of instability in the Middle East... Who created Islamic State? America ... America's claim of fighting against Islamic State is a lie," said Khamenei, the hardline Iranian leader known for his sharp anti-American rhetoric, addressing senior Iranian officials on Monday.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed the US of disregarding its part of obligations under the nuclear deal, adding that US President Donald Trump will be forced to stick to it under international pressure.

Speaking alongside his Norwegian counterpart Børge Brende in Oslo on Monday, Zarif called out Washington for failing to deliver on the deal, hailing the milestone agreement between Iran, US and five other world powers a

"an important achievement for the international community in reducing tension and preventing an unnecessary crisis from taking a toll on peace and security."

Comment: Whether Mr. Trump thinks the Iran Deal was good or bad, the obligations were agreed to and therefore must be honored. Trump plays at provocation with his rhetoric, looking for what shakes out, what remains solid. His style is that of the proverbial and blustery deal-maker, not one readily understood in circles where every word is taken at face value and the course of global politics turns on lesser dimes.

Question

Ron Paul: Why are we attacking the Syrians who are fighting ISIS?

Just when you thought our Syria policy could not get any worse, last week it did. The US military twice attacked Syrian government forces from a military base it illegally occupies inside Syria. According to the Pentagon, the attacks on Syrian government-backed forces were "defensive" because the Syrian fighters were approaching a US self-declared "de-confliction" zone inside Syria. The Syrian forces were pursuing ISIS in the area, but the US attacked anyway.

The US is training yet another rebel group fighting from that base, located near the border of Iraq at al-Tanf, and it claims that Syrian government forces pose a threat to the US military presence there. But the Pentagon has forgotten one thing: it has no authority to be in Syria in the first place! Neither the US Congress nor the UN Security Council has authorized a US military presence inside Syria.

So what gives the Trump Administration the right to set up military bases on foreign soil without the permission of that government? Why are we violating the sovereignty of Syria and attacking its military as they are fighting ISIS? Why does Washington claim that its primary mission in Syria is to defeat ISIS while taking military actions that benefit ISIS?

The Pentagon issued a statement saying its presence in Syria is necessary because the Syrian government is not strong enough to defeat ISIS on its own. But the "de-escalation zones" agreed upon by the Syrians, Russians, Iranians, and Turks have led to a reduction in fighting and a possible end to the six-year war. Even if true that the Syrian military is weakened, its weakness is due to six years of US-sponsored rebels fighting to overthrow it!

Comment: Mr. Paul, always the wise and peace-seeking reminder of how things should be.

Comey may be responsible for NYT leaks stretching back to March

Fired FBI Director James Comey admitted to giving the contents of his 'Trump memo' to a good friend who is a Columbia Law School Professor so he could leak it to the press.

Comey had a business-as-usual attitude while he admitted to giving his memo to a friend to leak to the press. TGP recently reported that at least 9 of 38 Deep State leaks to the media are linked to or related to former FBI Director James Comey.

It is now being reported that there may be a trail of other leaks that connect Comey to the New York Times dating back to at least March and Trump's legal team is reportedly preparing complaints to be filed at the DOJ.

The US is dropping calls for Assad to go because the Syrian regime is a better bet than ISIS

In Syria and Lebanon there are no plans for a future, but the Syrian army is going to have a role in any New Syria

I'm getting a bit tired of reading about the "US-backed alliance of Syrian militias" and their advance against Isis. The 'alliance' is largely Kurdish - which is why, I suppose, the Americans talked about northern Syria when they announced the visit of General Joseph Votel, the head of US Central Command, to the little Kurdish enclave.

General Votel could only set foot in the tiny strip of territory along the Turkish border partly held by Kurdish and a sprinkling of Turkmen groups. A visit to northern Syria by an American general is thus a lot less impressive than it sounds.

It's interesting to see a US commander crossing the border to cheer on participants in a civil war. That's also what the American military has been doing in Iraq, where forces have been encouraging Shia militias fighting on the outskirts of Fallujah, and even providing air support to the forces of the perilously weak government in Baghdad.

Stacked deck: Robert Mueller fills Trump investigation staff with Democrat donors and defenders

Special counsel's team includes former Clinton Foundation lawyer, contributors to Obama, Hillary, more

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich sparked a mini-meltdown in the media Monday with a tweet challenging the fairness of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Gingrich, who also appeared on "The Laura Ingraham Show," pointed to the early hires special counsel Robert Mueller has made.

"Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair," he tweeted. "Look who he is hiring.check fec [sic] reports. Time to rethink."

He's not wrong about the donations. Four top lawyers hired by Mueller have contributed tens of thousands of dollars over the years to the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates, including former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump's 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Qatar's national currency hits 11-year low amid Saudi row

With increasing diplomatic and economic pressure from its Arab neighbors, Qatar's national currency, the riyal, has reached its lowest exchange rate against the US dollar since 1998.

The Qatar Central Bank is currently trying to keep the riyal fixed at around 3.64 per dollar, but the Saudi-led boycott raises concerns that the regulator will have to weaken the currency.
"I don't think there is any reason that people need to be concerned about what's happening or any speculation on the Qatari riyal," the Emirate's finance minister, Ali Shareef Al Emadi, said in an interview with CNBC earlier this week.

Tillerson says Trump has no authorization to order strikes against Damascus, Iranian proxies in Syria

President Donald Trump has no Congressional authorization to order the US military to target groups backed by Iran in Syria, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a hearing on Tuesday.

"I would agree with that," Tillerson said when asked if there was no legal authorization from Congress to target Syrian President Bashar Assad or Iranian proxies.

Tillerson stressed that the US mission and purpose in Syria has not changed from its focus on defeating Daesh. The US-led coalition has been fighting the terrorist group in Syria since 2014 without UN approval or Assad's request.

On June 8, the coalition bombed pro-Damascus forces in Syria near the town of al-Tanf. On June 6, the coalition conducted a strike on pro-Syrian government forces as they entered a de-confliction zone and allegedly posed threat. On May 18, the coalition hit pro-Assad fighters near al-Tanf for the first time.

Money talks? Boris Johnson intervenes in Gulf crisis as U.S. ambassador suddenly quits

Boris Johnson has intervened in the Gulf crisis, which has seen major Arab states boycott and blockade Qatar over alleged terrorist sponsorship. Could the UK's sudden interest have anything to do with Qatar's multi-billion dollar UK investments?

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will meet a number of Gulf politicians in an effort to defuse the situation, in the wake of boycotts imposed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Egypt over accusations of collusion and funding terrorist groups.

Sea traffic and commercial flights over neighboring territories have been stopped.

Both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have blocked the transmission of Qatar's global TV channel Al Jazeera.

Qatari authorities deny any links with extremist groups. Critics have pointed to Saudi Arabia's own links to extremist Islamist ideology.

Comment: U.S. Ambassador to Qatar Dana Smith quit today, giving no details as to why. Interesting timing, to say the least!

Meanwhile, the Saudis have told Tillerson that there is no blockade on Qatar, and food shipments are allowed.
"There is — there is no blockade of Qatar," al-Jubeir said. "Qatar is free to go — the ports are open, the airports are open."
Which is a tad disingenuous, given that Saudi Arabia closed the border with Qatar - by which Qatar received about half of its food.

Former Panamian leader Ricardo Martinelli, wanted by Interpol and at home on charges of embezzlement and spying, was detained on a provisional arrest warrant near Miami and taken into custody ahead of looming extradition.

Martinelli was arrested near his home in Coral Gables, southwest of downtown Miami, at about 6:30pm on Monday evening, the Miami Herald reported.

The disgraced politician, who had fled to Miami fearing persecution for corruption charges in Panama, was transferred to the Federal Detention Center in Miami, where he will stay until his extradition hearing kicks off on Tuesday morning.
