Iraq to further strengthen its anti-ISIS border cooperation with Syria

Riad Hassoun Al Tai
Riad Hassoun Al Tai, Chargé d'affaires at the Iraqi Embassy in Damascus, yesterday affirmed that the coordination between the armies of Syria and Iraq is ongoing and that soon the entire border area will be under their control.

"It is obvious that there should be a coordination between the Iraqi Army and the Syrian Army in order to liberate all land controlled by ISIS. This is essential for the both sides", Al Tai was quoted by the Syrian newspaper Al Watan.

He said the main part of the effort has already been achieved, especially after taking control of Al Tanf border crossing.

The UN high commissioner for human rights has accused Israeli and Palestinian authorities of failing to fully investigate alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, in a new report released on Monday.

The paper evaluated compliance with 64 previous reports and some 929 recommendations from the Human Rights Council, the UN secretary general and UN rights investigators from 2009 to 2016.

"Impunity for violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory has been a long-standing concern articulated by the United Nations and civil society," the report by High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein stated.

Making their plea to Congress, top Pentagon officials testified that the military budget must be increased beyond the $639 billion requested by President Donald Trump.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis joined Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine General Joseph Dunford and Pentagon comptroller David Norquist to urge Congress to grow defense spending on Monday, during a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee.

Mattis castigated the legislative branch, saying, "Congress has sidelined itself from its active constitutional role" for having failed to repeal an important law that limits what can be spent in the military budget, according to the Associated Press.

"It has blocked new programs, prevented service growth, stalled industry initiative and placed troops at greater risk," Mattis added.

Indonesia's military chief says Jakarta is looking to establish joint patrols with the Philippines and Malaysia for protection against Islamic State. It comes as the military said there are terrorists' sleeper cells all over Indonesia.

The patrols will be protecting the Indonesian territorial waters.

Indonesia's military chief, General Gatot Nurmantyo, said that he and Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu are set to discuss the matter next week with their counterparts from Malaysia and the Philippines.

The meeting will take place on Tarakan Island, Indonesia, and will include signing an agreement to step up joint patrols.

A number of Southeast Asian states are on high alert since an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL)-affiliated group attempted to seize the city of Marawi in the southern Philippines.

Following the decision of the Palestinian Authority to pay less for electricity consumed by the Gaza Strip, Israel has voted to cut them off. The decision might have fatal consequences for healthcare and the environment in the enclave.

Israel's security cabinet unanimously voted to cut the Gaza Strip's power supply on Monday. The decision was made after the Palestinian Authority (PA) limited how much it will pay for power supplied to enclave.

"This is a decision by [Abbas]... Israelis paying Gaza's electricity bill is an impossible situation," Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan told Army Radio, according to Reuters.

Ethereum, the world's largest cryptocurrency after bitcoin, has caught the attention of Vladimir Putin as a potential tool to help Russia diversify its economy beyond oil and gas.

Putin met Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum last week and supported his plans to build contacts with local partners to implement blockchain technology in Russia, according to a statement on Kremlin's website.

"The digital economy isn't a separate industry, it's essentially the foundation for creating brand new business models," Putin said at the event, discussing means to boost growth long-term after Russia ended its worst recession in two decades.

A suspected North Korean drone has been discovered by Seoul near the country's border, according to South Korean military officials. The drone managed to take photos of the THAAD missile defense system before crashing.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was found by a local resident on a mountain in South Korea's Gangwon Province last Friday, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing officials.

It is believed to have been deployed by Pyongyang, and to have crashed after running out of fuel while returning to the North.

Corbyn's secret to success was rejecting PC culture

Jeremy Corbyn

The fact that such an approach amounts to no less than a major shift in our political space is a sad sign of the times we live in. But it shows where we can go from here

The unexpected electoral success of the Labour Party has put to shame the predominant cynical wisdom of the connoisseurs, even those who pretended to sympathise with Corbyn and whose preferred excuse was: "Yes, I would vote for him, but he is unelectable, the people are too manipulated and afraid, the moment is not yet right for such a radical move."

Recall Tony Blair's claim that under Corbyn the Labour Party is irredeemably marginalised, no longer a potential party of government. The hypocrisy of such statements is that they mask their own political stance as a resigned insight into the objective state of things.

Comment: Interesting how the author manages to undermine Corbyn's success by equating it with 'naive outspokenness'. Clearly Corbyn's outspokenness was bold, informed, and compassionate, offering a practical alternative to the failing political system. As Neil Clark recently wrote,
The great 'crime' Corbyn committed in the eyes of the Establishment was not to have once met Martin McGuinness, but to have broken away from the "phoney center" ground of endless war and privatization and offer voters a genuine alternative to neocon/neoliberal policies. He criticized the UK's 'interventionist' foreign policy, so beloved by those who never go near a war zone, and dared to suggest that Britain's involvement in regime-change wars has increased the terrorist threat, which of course it has. He vowed to end arms sales to Saudi Arabia. He pledged to re-nationalize the rip-off railways and public utilities. He promised to scrap student tuition fees, zero-hour contracts, and to end austerity. His program wasn't 'hard-left' or 'extreme,' but actually very moderate, fully in tune with mainstream public opinion.

Under UK law, if May can't pass 'Queens Speech' Corbyn automatically becomes PM

Theresa May weak and chaotic leadership
The Tories announced today that Theresa May's 'Queen's Speech' programme for government has been postponed from its expected date of 19 June - clearly because they have so far been unable to reach agreement with the Democratic Unionists (DUP), who are queasy about the prospect of going into an unpopular government against the clear wish of many British people.

Even the possibility of a Tory-DUP deal has raised tensions and fears in Northern Ireland, with experts asserting that the collaboration between the two parties puts the 'Good Friday Agreement' at serious risk, threatening the fragile peace process.

In spite of this, the Tories persist in pursuing such a deal for their own narrow gain,
