US President Donald Trump opened his much-anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin by raising concerns about Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
"They had a very robust and lengthy exchange on the subject," Tillerson said after the two leaders met for two hours on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

"The president pressed President Putin on more than one occasion regarding Russian involvement. President Putin denied such involvement, as I think he has in the past," he said.

Comment: More from The Duran:
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson admits that Russia may have a better approach to Syria and the US. He also said that the US and Russia have the same overall goals in Syria.

Rex Tillerson has given an audio interview to reporters after the lengthy meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin which both Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended.

Tillerson spoke of how after getting to know one another, Trump and Putin became immersed in a thoroughly engaging conversation.

Tillerson gave the following description of why the meeting lasted so long,
"...There was so much to talk about, all these issues, just about everything got touched on...there was just such a level of engagement and exchange that neither one of them (Trump and Putin) wanted to stop."
Tillerson continued saying that Melania Trump was sent in at one point to try and get the leaders to conclude their meeting,
"They sent in the first lady to see if she could get us out of there....we went another hour after she came to see us, so clearly she failed (to get the leaders to hurry up)."
Tillerson stated that the bulk of the meeting covered Syria where he said that Russia and the US have the same objectives in Syria but with different views on how to achieve them. He said, that there is
"...more commonality than differences in Syria...maybe they've got the right approach and maybe we've got the wrong approach."
This is something of a startling admission from a US Secretary of State. Tillerson who has met with Putin when he was a businessman seemed to think that the leaders had a very productive meeting in spite of difficult circumstances.

A special channel between the Russian and American presidents will be established to further push for a settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov has announced following the Putin-Trump meeting.

Additional efforts will be made "to support" the Minsk peace agreements and the work of the existing contact group on Ukraine, Russia's chief diplomat said.

"While discussing Ukraine, the American side informed us that they had appointed a special representative to assist the efforts on settling the Ukrainian crisis.

"Arrangements have been made to create a channel between presidents of Russia and US to use this opportunity that Washington has, to further advance the settlement based on the Minsk agreements and considering the potential established in the contact group and the Normandy format," Lavrov told reporters during the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Putin: Russia against protectionism & politicizing of trade

Russia opposes illegitimate trade and financial restrictions, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday, ahead of the G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany.
"We oppose the growing protectionism in the world. Illegitimate trade and financial restrictions with obvious political implication are aimed at eliminating competitors. It curtails business ties, results in a loss of trust between economic participants. It is tearing apart the very fabric of the world economy," Putin said, speaking at a meeting of leaders of BRICS countries on the sidelines of the G20 meeting.
According to Putin, the G20 nations should more vigorously uphold the principles of open and mutually beneficial trade, as specified by the rules of the World Trade Organization.
"We are convinced that the G20 should make a more significant contribution to the creation of a fair model of global development; a model that will be able to ensure sustainable growth which will help to eliminate the accumulated imbalances between the countries," Putin said.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, are visiting the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay - the first such visit under the new administration. They are reportedly accompanied by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

The high-ranking delegation is visiting the camp to get an "up-to-date understanding of current operations," Ian Prior, a spokesman for the US Department of Justice, said in a statement.
"Recent attacks in Europe and elsewhere confirm that the threat to our nation is immediate and real, and it remains essential that we use every lawful tool available to prevent as many attacks as possible," Prior said.

Comment: Looks like the camp will stay open for business.

Prime Minister Theresa May risks being overthrown by members of her own party amid reports a coup is being planned for later this year.

According to the Sun, a government source said junior ministers are growing increasingly concerned that May, who has been described as a "horse with a broken leg" is being propped up by a "self-indulgent" Cabinet.

May has been facing increased pressure to resign after she called a snap election earlier this year in a bid to strengthen her government in the wake of Brexit negotiations.

Pope Francis has urged the heads of G20 countries to end "useless slaughter" and halt the arms race, in a written address to world leaders who have gathered for a two-day summit in Hamburg, Germany.

The pontiff sent the message to the world leaders, saying that "war is never a solution," and that he feels the responsibility to demand that the world put an end to all these "useless slaughters."

The aim of the G20, Pope Francis pointed out, is "to resolve economic differences peacefully and to agree on common financial and trade rules to allow for the integral development of all."

Gerasimov Doctrine or how a Russian general became the West's biggest boogieman

Valery Gerasimov
© Sputnik/ Evgeny Biyatov
RIA Novosti military observer Ilya Plekhanov takes a look at how Russian Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Valery Gerasimov became the source of attention of Western military analysts and media, which dubbed him the main ideologist behind the concept of 'hybrid warfare'.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal published a story on the 'next phase of a Russian-US Cold War', and the likelihood that it will be shaped by dynamic new hybrid strategies in an age of "drones, precision bombs and sophisticated new forms of propaganda."

Alongside US Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, WSJ lists Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, as among "this generation's most influential officers," and waxes poetic about the rivalry being like something out of WWII history or a John Le Carre novel.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have held a much-anticipated first meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany, which lasted more than two hours.

The meeting was initially planned to last for around 30-40 minutes, international media reported earlier in the day.

"President Putin and I have been discussing various things, and I think it's going very well," Trump told the media during the photo session.

"We've had some very, very good talks, we are going to have a talk now and obviously that will continue," Trump added, saying there are hopes of "a lot of very positive things happening."

Comment: As the G20 summit kicked off in Germany, the leaders had their first short contact, shaking hands and confirming the upcoming full-fledged meeting.
Donald Trump announced the meeting over Twitter, while Putin's spokesman provided confirmation.

"They shook hands and said that soon they will hold a separate meeting, that they will see each other soon," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The Kremlin has said that it will not be a brief contact on the sidelines, but "a full-fledged 'sit down' meeting." Previously, the leaders spoke only by phone.

In the lead up to the meeting, Moscow and Washington have voiced some of their expectations. The Kremlin sees the event as an opportunity to "establish a working dialogue" between Putin and Trump, which is vital for resolving "a critical mass of conflicts and problems," according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He also said that the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine and the ways of resolving them may be discussed, among other issues, in the first meeting between the two leaders.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he discussed at the first meeting with US President Donald Trump on Friday the situation in Ukraine and Syria, the fight against terrorism and cybersecurity.
"I had a very lengthy conversation with the President of the United States, there were a lot of issues such as Ukraine, Syria, other problems, some bilateral issues," Putin said at the beginning of his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"We again returned to the issues of fighting terrorism and cybersecurity," Putin added.

On Friday, the G20 summit kicked off in the German city of Hamburg, bringing together the leaders of major world countries and developing economies.
