Trump decision to dissolve business councils helps drain the swamp

Donald Trump's decision to dissolve his two business advisory councils in the face of mass defections of corporate leaders and Wall Street titans was a clarifying moment for his presidency. Just as the president promised, he drained the swamp.

Ironically, the swamp was already draining itself as business leaders decided that they agreed with the mainstream media's interpretation of Trump's stance on the violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia. The president had unequivocally condemned racism and white nationalism while adding that 'alt-left' violence was also deplorable. In response he was inaccurately accused of equating white supremacists with "protesters."

The resignations made it clear that many of the "business leaders" could not be counted on for leadership if that involved standing against the wrath of the mainstream media.

And so the swamp was drained.

Russia has deployed defense systems to be used against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Syria, head of the Russian General Staff's Office for the Development of UAVs Maj. Gen. Alexander Novikov said Friday.

"In order to efficiently fight unmanned aerial vehicles at Russia's armed forces deployment positions in Syria, we have developed a system, including subsystems of detection, warnings of flights of unmanned aerial vehicles, and jamming and hard-kill measures," Novikov said at the round table on the sidelines of the Army-2017 forum.

He noted that subsystems comprised missile defense means, radioelectronic combat (REC) systems and aerial surveillance equipment.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new financial sanctions against the Venezuelan government, the White House said in a statement on Friday.

"President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order imposing strong, new financial sanctions on the dictatorship in Venezuela," the statement said.

The White House said the measures were "carefully calibrated" to put financial pressure on the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

Is General Mattis the real president in the White House?

Mattis
© MarketWatchDefense Secretary General Mattis
Back on 16th February 2017, shortly after the forced resignation of President Trump's first National Security Adviser General Flynn, I spoke of the extraordinary power that US Defense Secretary General Mattis appeared to be wielding within the Trump administration:
General Mattis is becoming a dominant figure within this administration. As a much decorated former combat officer who is also considered to be a genuine intellectual, Mattis appears to have quickly asserted his authority over the Joint Chiefs of Staff with whom civilian Defense Secretaries have previously often had uneasy relationships...

All in all General Mattis appears to be gathering more and more of the threads of power into his hands. If this trend continues, and if he uses his position skilfully, Mattis could end up becoming one of the most powerful Defense Secretaries the US has had since the Second World War. Whether such a concentration of power in the hands of a soldier is a good thing is another matter.
These comments were written in anticipation of Vice-Admiral Bob Hayward, a military officer known to be close to General Mattis, being appointed President Trump's National Security Adviser in place of General Flynn.

In any event, Admiral Hayward declined the post, but the person who obtained it instead - General H.R. McMaster - is yet another military officer who seems to be working as closely with General Mattis as Admiral Hayward was expected to do.

Since the appointment as White House Chief of Staff of General Kelly, like General Mattis a former Marine officer, General Mattis's influence extends not just to the National Security Council but to the White House staff.

Comment: That the US is working on its posturing rather than viable and productive solutions, suggests Mattis is creating a holding pattern until there is less resistance to either a more productive relationship with China and Russia or a clearer path to war.

Trump chastises former spymaster Clapper for lying to Congress

US President Donald Trump has fired back at former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, bringing up his testimony before Congress, after Clapper told CNN that Trump was unfit to be president and should resign.

"James Clapper, who famously got caught lying to Congress, is now an authority on Donald Trump. Will he show you his beautiful letter to me?" the president tweeted Thursday morning. It was not immediately clear which letter he was referring to.

The "lying to Congress" part was apparently a reference to the 2013 Congressional hearing, where Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) asked Clapper if the National Security Agency collected data on millions of Americans.

"No, sir ... not wittingly," Clapper answered. Soon thereafter, Edward Snowden's revelations showed that the NSA did, in fact, collect data on millions of Americans.

Comment: Clapper is a one-trick windbag in a mental loop. Why is he still around? He feeds the unsubstantiated narrative frenzy and has enough past-clout to cast unfounded dispersions...a mouthpiece.

Assange blasts the 'absurd' idea to classify WikiLeaks as a hostile intelligence service

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange slammed efforts to officially class his whistleblowing organization as a "non-state hostile intelligence service" - branding it an attempt to put the 'Pompeo Doctrine' into law. The Senate Intelligence Committee is proposing a provision in its annual 'intelligence authorisation' bill to declare WikiLeaks as such.

"It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States," the bill states.

Published Friday, the bill was passed by the committee late last month on a 14-1 vote. Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon voted against the measure citing the "legal, constitutional and policy implications" that the WikiLeaks provision may entail.

Comment: Wikileaks gives the establishment everything to fear, therefore it must be denounced and destroyed. All the more reason to support Wikileaks and its timely information and not let it become an official "enemy."

Beijing: Trump is sabotaging existing world trade setup

China is talking tough over Washington's investigations into trade practices. Beijing has accused the US government of sabotaging the global trading system.

Beijing pledged to use "all means necessary" to defend the interests of the country and its companies against the investigation, said Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng.

"The US investigation of China based on domestic laws sabotages the existing international trading system, and has poured cold water on all parties that have been working to promote bilateral economic ties," he said.

Gao stressed China had no plans to change its policies on backing investment by Chinese corporations abroad.

Last week, Washington began an official investigation into whether Beijing is making US companies transfer American intellectual property, technology, and innovation to China. The probe, backed by a US trade law from 1974, will reportedly last a year and may allow Washington to impose economic penalties on China, including setting tariffs on imports to the US.

Earlier this week, Washington initiated a dispute settlement panel at the World Trade Organization to check on China's administration of tariff rate quotas on agricultural products. The step reportedly might make Beijing change its policies or face retaliation if the US wins the dispute.

Comment: Of course it is more convenient for China if the US maintains status quo, rather than exploring its options to equalize the trade policies and practices. Hence the rhetoric and objections. If roles were reversed, the US would be equally accusatorial.

Mr. President - You've got to take it to the people

trump

I would hope most Americans watched President Donald Trump's rally in Phoenix on Tuesday evening. Much of it was classic Trump, touting his accomplishments, criticizing "fake news" and talking about the swamp in Washington, D.C. Certainly, it wouldn't be President Trump without his in-your-face attitude.

If you missed it, go online and listen to the last few minutes of the speech. In my opinion, that's what it was all about. This is exactly what President Trump needs to be doing-speaking directly to the American people about tax reform and tax cuts for American businesses and middle-class citizens, about infrastructure improvements and about the greatness of the American people.

As he reminded the crowd, we are the people who dug the Panama Canal, put a man on the moon and defeated Communism. No wonder people cheered when he said, "We can do anything, we can build anything and we can dream anything. ... We are Americans, and the future belongs to us."

It's one thing to complain, whine and basically have your entire administration held hostage by a do-nothing Congress and, in some respects, the news media. But this president needs to do just one thing-and it happens to be something he's very good at-take his agenda of making America great again directly to the people.

Ultimately, the people are the only ones who will get anything done. We the people are the ones who can change this do-nothing Congress by voting them out of office. We the people are the only ones who will be able to convince Congress to do something.

Comment: A good reminder that Trump's biggest resource is the American public who elected him, and perhaps his best strategy as a leader is to make them his partner on the difficult road forward. Given the intel war on the people; the manipulations of Israel, Congress and the Military; the insanity of Russiaphobia, MSM and snowflakery; the public's best (only?) resource, likewise, is President Trump.

US indicts former French bank Societe Generale managers for Libor manipulation

Two former managers at the French bank Societe Generale have been accused of participating in a scheme to manipulate the global US dollar Libor benchmark interest rate.

According to the US Justice Department, Danielle Sindzingre and Muriel Bescond allegedly used their positions at the bank's offices in Paris between 2010 and 2011 to submit false information.

"The allegations in today's indictment suggest a complete and total disregard for the integrity of the financial markets and for innocent consumers and everyday people whose personal finances hinge on the interest rates they pay on various loans," said Kenneth Blanco, acting head of the department's criminal division.

The authorities said the alleged manipulation resulted in more than $170 million in damage on global financial markets where transactions occurred based on manipulated rates.

Pro-EU MPs claim 'poisonous' Brexit debate has demonized immigrants

A pro-EU pressure group in the UK Parliament, which is fighting to preserve EU freedom of movement, says the Brexit referendum has led to the demonization of immigrants.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration (APPG) claims the anti-immigration rhetoric used during the EU referendum in June 2016 is responsible for the increasingly poor treatment of minorities in Britain and diminished social integration.

"The demonization of immigrants, exacerbated by the poisonous tone of the debate during the EU referendum campaign and after, shames us all and is a huge obstacle to creating a socially integrated nation," Labour MP and Chair of the APPG Chuka Umunna said.

"We must act now to safeguard our diverse communities from the peddlers of hatred and division while addressing valid concerns about the impact of immigration on public services, some of which can contribute to local tensions," he said, according to Sky News.
