Fyodor Lukyanov: Here's what Russians think of Joe Biden

The US president's travails speak volumes for how the Washington 'swamp' operates.

Donald Trump has predicted that Joe Biden will be remembered as the worst US president ever. History will decide on that, but most likely he's a contender for the top spot in one category - as the most tragic figure to lead the United States, up there alongside those who have been killed in office.

Even leaving aside the personal traumas Biden has endured (the death of his first wife and his daughter, the death of his favorite son and the disgrace of another), his political biography is all about an ongoing quest for the highest position, in which he often seemed to find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course, he cannot be called a failure, but the end of his career is so depressing that one wonders whether it would have been better if he'd never reached the summit in the first place.

If Biden had been able to challenge Trump in 2016, when he was still quite alert and energetic, a lot of things might have turned out differently. For him, at least. The established narrative is that he withdrew from the race because of the death of his eldest son, Beau. The unofficial feeling is that he lost out to an internal lobby promoting Hillary Clinton. Whatever the case, he missed his chance for an 'active presidency.' Four years later, all impartial observers (and they were few and far between, it must be said) realised that Biden's age and condition had rendered him far from fully fit. However, Covid came to the rescue, derailing Trump's already rollercoaster presidency. By 2020, Biden was adamant that he would serve a single term. By 2024, he had managed to change his mind, but age had taken its toll.

Comment: A careful take by the Russians. Unaddressed: Biden's corruption that pervades and overrides any significant contributions he might have but didn't make to America's legacy.

Pompeo offers Trump an escalatory 'peace plan' for Ukraine

The former secretary of state wants his old boss to offer Kiev half-a-trillion dollars and NATO membership.

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has claimed that Donald Trump would be open to dramatically ramping up US support for Ukraine if elected president. Pompeo's plan, however, contradicts Trump's stated position about the conflict to date. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published on Thursday, Pompeo and co-author Mark Urban, a neoconservative strategist, argued there is "much evidence" that Trump would give Ukraine enough aid to dictate peace terms to Russia.

The two policy hawks claimed that Trump's supply of Javelin missiles to Ukraine in 2017 and his decision not to lobby against the passage of a $61 billion military aid package for Kiev this spring prove that he would be willing to embrace a hawkish plan to tilt the balance of power in Kiev's favor.
Such a plan would involve: Ramping up sanctions on Moscow, expanding US energy production to drive down Russia's oil and gas revenues, forcing NATO members to spend more on defense, and offering Ukraine a $500 billion "lend-lease" fund to purchase arms.
Ukraine would also be given permission to use any kind of weapons to strike targets anywhere in Russia, Pompeo and Urban wrote, claiming that this gloves-off approach would force Moscow to the negotiating table, where it would accept Ukraine joining NATO and the EU, and agree to the "demilitarization" of Crimea, where Russia's Black Sea fleet is based.

Pompeo's plan has not been endorsed by Trump.

Comment: 'Loose Cannon Pompeo' fires a dud. We will know Trump's strategy when he is ready to share it.

Trump brushes off Secret Service: Promises more outdoor rallies after assassination attempt

Trump Assassination

Former President Trump said he would continue holding large outdoor rallies just two weeks after he was nearly killed at one by a would-be assassin.

"I WILL CONTINUE TO DO OUTDOOR RALLIES, AND SECRET SERVICE HAS AGREED TO SUBSTANTIALLY STEP UP THEIR OPERATION," Trump posted in a defiant missive to Truth Social Saturday.

"THEY ARE VERY CAPABLE OF DOING SO. NO ONE CAN EVER BE ALLOWED TO STOP OR IMPEDE FREE SPEECH OR GATHERING!!!" he added.

Comment: Aaaand in a further finger to his enemies, Trump will make a return to Pennsylvania:
Weeks after an attempt was made on his life at a rally in Butler, former President Donald Trump is slated to return to Pennsylvania to appear at a Harrisburg venue on Wednesday.

The Republican nominee will speak to his supporters at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which is about 220 miles away from the Butler Farm Show site where shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks grazed his ear with a bullet, narrowly missing his head on July 13.

Harrisburg Director of Communications Matt Maisel told Fox News Digital on Friday that Trump had made "multiple visits to the farm show complex multiple times since his time as president" and that the city has had "zero issues every time that he's come here."

He also said that the Harrisburg Police Department would just be controlling traffic in the vicinity of the rally, and that on-site security measures would be handled by the Secret Service, Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Capitol Police.
After the SS tried to slag the Butler/Beaver forces as the weak link in Trump's Butler security, the local forces must make sure the SS dots every "i" and crosses every "t" in setting up security for this event. The informal law enforcement grapevine must be buzzing with warnings to their fellow officers.

Saving our democracy

However it happened this week, "Joe Biden" passed the blowtorch to a new generation and got himself gone from the political battlefield. Delegates to the coming Democratic National Convention (August 19) were duly notified of the selected replacement, Veep Kamala Harris, and ordered to line up behind her. Not a peep of disagreement was heard among them. Amazing that no one had a different idea. Thus, is democracy saved.

The curious details around this event remain shrouded in mystery. Reporters for The New York Times and the WashPo could not be bothered to inquire, and their readers are not inclined to ask how all this came to be. It just is. In a culture with no sense of consequence, things just happen or un-happen. It is your duty to recognize that the wind now blows from another direction and bend with it.

One thing was obvious: the long-running prank of pretending that President "Joe Biden" is sound-of-mind fell apart after his mortifying appearance on the debate stage June 27th. Apparently, every last captain and foot-soldier in the Democratic Party ranks was taken completely by surprise to see their champion flicker out in real time, like a forty-watt bulb that has done years of duty on the front porch and suddenly leaves you in the dark. Three weeks followed with "Joe Biden" boldly campaigning as if nothing had happened. (Perhaps his mind did not register that things had changed.)

Comment: It is easier to see what we want to see than what we do not.

Israel slams UN official over Netanyahu-Hitler comparison

Special rapporteur Francesca Albanese has previously called for sanctions on Israel's prime minister

Israel has slammed Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, for "anti-Semitism" after she endorsed a social media post comparing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.

On Thursday, Albanese responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter), showing Hitler surrounded by a cheering crowd, above a photo of Netanyahu being greeted in the US Congress this week.

"History is always watching," Craig Mokhiber, a former UN human rights official, wrote in the post. Mokhiber resigned late last October, accusing the world body of failing to prevent the "genocide" of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

"This is precisely what I was thinking today," Albanese said in response on Thursday.

Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress in Washington on Wednesday to defend Israel's war in Gaza, in which more than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Palestinian enclave's Health Ministry.

Comment: A Jewish holocaust survivor has no problem with comparing what Israel is currently doing in Gaza to the Nazi holocaust.

US and Israel should create 'Middle East NATO' - Netanyahu

The Israeli prime minister has proposed an alliance aimed against Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed the creation of a new military bloc modeled after NATO and called the "Abraham Alliance," aimed against Iran.

Netanyahu spoke before the joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday. It was his fourth address to American lawmakers, beating Winston Churchill's record, although about 70 House and Senate members declined to attend for one reason or another. Netanyahu said at one point:
"America forged a security alliance in Europe to counter the growing Soviet threat. Likewise, America and Israel today can forge a security alliance in the Middle East to counter the growing Iranian threat."
He said a "glimpse" of that alliance could be seen on April 14, when Iran launched a missile and drone attack against Israel and the US and the UK helped shoot some of them down. Netanyahu thanked US President Joe Biden "for bringing that alliance together," as well as his predecessor Donald Trump for brokering the 'Abraham Accords' between Israel and several Arab countries during his term.

"I think we should call it the Abraham Alliance," he said of the proposed NATO-like bloc.

Comment: He wishes. An alliance guarantees war and others to blame.

World Court has cleared the fog hiding Western support for Israel's crimes

The legal ruling by the world's highest court obliges western states not just to end their persecution of the boycott movement but to take up that cause as their own

Don't be fooled. The ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 19 July that Israel's occupation of Palestine is unlawful is earth-shattering. Israel is a rogue state, according to the world's highest court. For that reason, the judgment will be studiously ignored by the cabal of western states and their medias that for decades have so successfully run cover for Israel. Doubters need only watch the reception Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu receives during his visit to the United States this week.

Even though he is currently being pursued for war crimes by the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the US Congress will give him a hero's welcome when he addresses its representatives on Wednesday.

The warm handshakes and standing ovations will be a reminder that Netanyahu has had the full backing of western powers throughout the nine-month slaughter of at least 16,000 Palestinian children in Gaza - with another 21,000 missing, most of them under rubble.

The welcome will be a reminder that western capitals are fully on board with Israel's levelling of Gaza and the starvation of its population - in what the same court concluded way back in January amounted to a "plausible genocide". And it will serve as a heavy slap in the face to those like the World Court committed to international law - reminding them that the West and its most favoured client state believe they are untouchable.

Comment: There is no reversing the tragedy that is Palestine. There is, however a reckoning for Israel and its cohorts - sometime this century should we all live that long.

Question

Can any external mediator resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict?

Several major world powers are attempting to broker peace in the Middle East, but internal divisions are just too deep.

The new wave of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that erupted following an attack by armed Palestinian factions on Israel on October 7 has become one of the most significant events in the chronicle of Middle Eastern discord. The fighting has been relentless for ten months, causing civilian deaths in Gaza each day, while the shadows of an escalating conflict loom ever darker with the potential involvement of another militarized non-state group - the Lebanon-based Hezbollah.

Over many years of confrontation between Palestinians and Israelis, the current conflict has led to an unprecedented international public reaction, with massive anti-Israel protests held in major cities around the world, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. A number of European countries, including Spain, Ireland, and Norway, decided to officially recognize the Palestinian state, partly satisfying the demands of demonstrators and showing that the authorities are listening to public opinion.

Comment: Perhaps what has 'gone around' for decades from Israel, should 'come around'.

China throws clout behind Palestine

The Beijing Declaration cements the idea that global conflict resolution is now Made in China. But it also throws a wrench in US-Israeli efforts to manufacture a collaborator Palestinian government after the war in Gaza.

HONG KONG - The Beijing Declaration, signed earlier this week, constitutes yet another stunning Chinese diplomatic coup, but the document goes far beyond affirming China's pull.

The gathering of representatives of 14 Palestinian factions to commit to full reconciliation showed the entire world that the road to solving intractable geopolitical problems is no longer unilateral: it is multipolar, multi-nodal, and features BRICS/Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member China as an inescapable leader.

The concept of China as a peacemaking superpower is now so established that after the Iran-Saudi Arabia rapprochement and the signing of the Beijing Declaration, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba chose to tell his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing that Kiev is now finally ready to negotiate the end of the NATO-Russia proxy war in Ukraine.

Palestinians who came to Beijing were beaming. For Fatah Vice Chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul, "China is a light. China's efforts are rare on the international stage."

Hamas spokesman Hussam Badran said the Palestinian resistance movement accepted the Chinese invitation "with a positive spirit and patriotic responsibility." All Palestinian factions have reached a consensus on "Palestinian demands to end the war," adding that the "most important" part of the declaration is to form a government that builds Palestinian national consensus to "manage the affairs of the people of Gaza and the West Bank, oversee reconstruction, and create conditions for elections."

So, Kiev's puppet president Zelensky now wants peace, or rather another piece of the action

All of a sudden, it seems, the Kiev regime wants to give peace a chance. This week, the so-called president Vladimir Zelensky was telling the Vatican envoy Cardinal Pietro Parolin that it was urgent to find a peaceful end to the conflict with Russia to spare further loss of life.

"I think that we all understand that we must end the war as soon as possible, of course," Zelensky told the Vatican secretary of state during a meeting in Kiev.

Only a few months ago, Zelensky rebuffed calls from Pope Francis for a diplomatic settlement to the worst war in Europe since the Second World War.

And earlier this month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was similarly disdained when he visited Kiev to appeal for a negotiated end to the conflict.

Suddenly, though, there is a decided change in tune coming out of Kiev.

The day after Zelensky issued his purported concern for peace, the Kiev regime's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba flew to China to meet Wang Yi, China's top diplomat.

"The Ukrainian side is willing and ready to conduct dialogue and negotiations with the Russian side," Kuleba announced.

"I am convinced that a just peace in Ukraine is in China's strategic interests, and China's role as a global force for peace is important," he added, by way of ingratiating himself with Beijing.

Earlier this year, China and Brazil jointly proposed a plan for peace negotiations. That proposal was dismissed out of hand by the Kiev regime.

What's going on here is a cynical move by the Kiev regime to extend its survival and corruption racket.

Zelensky and his cronies have gotten obscenely rich from siphoning off the hundreds of billions in military and financial aid that the United States and its European NATO lackeys have showered on Ukraine to fight a futile proxy war against Russia.
