DNC retracts claim voter database targeted by 'Russian cyber-attack'

The latest alarming news on a sophisticated cyber-attack on the Democratic National Committee's voter database may have cemented one's worst fears over Russia hacking into the US elections... except it was really a "phishing test."

Bob Lord, the committee's chief security officer, raised the alarm on Wednesday after detecting a fake login page that mimicked the access page for Votebuilder, a program used by Democratic Party officials across that country that hosts the party's voter database.

"This attempt is further proof that there are constant threats as we head into midterm elections and we must remain vigilant in order to prevent future attacks," Lord said in a statement. However, within a few hours it became clear that blaming Moscow, no matter how tempting, would not be an option.

Comment: The DNC is practicing the art of recanting, on small fake claims, in order to work up to the real and important admission that Russia did not hack their system.

Zakharova: ISIS & Al-Nusra terrorists given protection in US-controlled Syrian 'refugee camp'

Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists use civilians as human shields as they hide in a refugee camp in Syrian territory controlled by the US - and the Americans are well aware of it, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and the Al-Qaeda proxy group Jabhat al-Nusra found quiet shelter in one of the biggest camps, Rukban, near the Syria-Jordan border, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters at her weekly news conference on Thursday. Neither Syrian authorities nor the UN have access to the site.

"ISIS militants, hundreds of them, and also al-Nusra militants in possession of heavy arms are hiding among the civilians, who are in fact being held hostage and used as human shields," Zakharova said.

Comment: Zakharova also stated the US is still trying to Balkanize Syria, while stealing its national wealth. TASS reports:
The diplomat said Syria's northeast remains in practice under the control of US military, who "continue pandering to local military units, in particular, buying their loyalty with weapons supplies".

"Thus, the process of setting up pseudo-state structures that are not envisaged by the Syrian legislation is in full swing in the Trans-Euphrates region," she stated.

According to Zakharova, Washington has practically started plundering Syria's' national wealth. "The US, last week said that it would stop financing some programs on stabilizing Syria. It was within this framework that the activity of anti-government structures was financed in practice, but that responsibility has shifted to its allies," she said.

"Now they engage in restoring and modernizing the oil producing infrastructure in the northeast of Syria, but in practice (they) have started plundering Syrian national wealth, this time not by their own means, but with the money received from other participants in the so-called US-led coalition, namely the Europeans and Arabs.

Trump on Cohen: 'People can lie about me and go from 10yrs in prison to national hero'

US President Donald Trump has told Fox that his former lawyer Michael Cohen "flipped" on him because he "made a great deal," and has also played down the idea that Cohen's testimony will be harmful to his presidency.

In an interview that aired on Fox & Friends Thursday morning, Trump said that Cohen - who testified that he paid hush money at Trump's direction to two women prior to the 2016 election - was not somebody who he spent a lot of time with and that the lawyer "didn't do big deals" during the ten years that he was one of his legal representatives.

Asked by Ainsley Earhardt if it was true that he had directed Cohen to pay off the women in an effort to keep them quiet before the election, Trump said he only found out about the payments "later on" and stressed that the money had not come out of campaign funds, which, he admitted, would be a "much bigger thing."

Russian Foreign Ministry: Secret 'regime change' directive exists that limits UN assistance in Syrian recovery

The UN has devised internal guidelines for limiting cooperation with Syria until a "political transition" takes place there, and it was drafted without any consent from the Security Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

The document in question is entitled 'Parameters and Principles of UN Assistance in Syria,' the ministry wrote in a statement to RT. It was issued by the UN Secretariat in October 2017 and provides guidelines for the UN agencies and programs in their work with the war-torn country.

The Secretariat issued the paper without requesting consent or even consulting the UN Security Council or the UN member states, at least on an official level, the ministry noted, adding that the "guidelines" document still "penetrates deeply" into the political situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, thus "going beyond the issue of simple coordination between the UN structures."

One particular provision of the document explicitly states that the UN "would be ready to facilitate reconstruction" in Syria only "once there is a genuine and inclusive political transition negotiated by the parties." The Russian ministry described it as an apparent attempt to prevent the international organization from contributing to Syria's recovery under the current circumstances, while enforcing a "politicized approach of the countries advocating a regime change."

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at tech companies for deplatforming "millions" of users, arguing that people must be allowed to decide for themselves what is true.

In a Friday tweet, the US president took aim at what he perceived as widespread censorship on social media. "Social Media Giants are silencing millions of people. Can't do this even if it means we must continue to hear Fake News like CNN, whose ratings have suffered gravely. People have to figure out what is real, and what is not, without censorship!" he wrote.

US State Dept warns South Africa over land confiscation amid diplomatic row with Pretoria

South Africa
Expropriation of land without compensation "would not be a good thing" and would send South Africa "down the wrong path," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters amid a diplomatic row with Pretoria.

Nauert's comments on Thursday come after South African authorities summoned US charge d'affaires in Pretoria Jessye Lapenn to explain a tweet by President Donald Trump that criticized land expropriation and "large scale killing of farmers," multiple reports said.

The website of the US embassy in South Africa was unavailable as of 9:30 pm local time, showing only the notification it was "experiencing technical difficulties."

Russia will definitely respond to Washington's latest sanctions and, in particular, it is accelerating efforts to abandon the American currency in trade transactions, said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

"The time has come when we need to go from words to actions, and get rid of the dollar as a means of mutual settlements, and look for other alternatives," he said in an interview with International Affairs magazine.

Desperate: US threatens sanctions on countries buying Russian S-400s

Once again warning Turkey against buying Russian S-400 air-defense systems, the US State Department has gone a step further, to virtually threaten all its NATO and other allies with sanctions should they consider similar deals.

Noting that the ahead-of-schedule S-400 deliveries to Turkey would be another "concern" for the US, the State Department's Heather Nauert stressed that Washington rejects other nations' plans to diversify their defense system supplies. Earlier this week Rosoboronexport confirmed that the first batch of launchers will be transferred to Ankara in 2019.

"It goes against our policy to have a NATO ally such as Turkey use an S-400 system. Part of the problem with that, it is - that it is not interoperable with other NATO systems," Nauert said. "And so we are against the - having some of our partners and allies around the world potentially purchase S-400s."
