When dissent becomes a crime: The war on political speech begins

Martin Luther King
© Business InsiderMartin Luther King, Jr.
"Once the principle is established that the government can arrest and jail protesters... officials will use it to silence opposition broadly."
— Heather Cox Richardson, historian
You can't have it both ways.

You can't live in a constitutional republic if you allow the government to act like a police state.

You can't claim to value freedom if you allow the government to operate like a dictatorship.

You can't expect to have your rights respected if you allow the government to treat whomever it pleases with disrespect and an utter disregard for the rule of law.

There's always a boomerang effect.

Whatever dangerous practices you allow the government to carry out now — whether it's in the name of national security or protecting America's borders or making America great again — rest assured, these same practices can and will be used against you when the government decides to set its sights on you. Arresting political activists engaged in lawful, nonviolent protest activities is merely the shot across the bow.

The chilling of political speech and suppression of dissident voices are usually among the first signs that you're in the midst of a hostile takeover by forces that are not friendly to freedom.

This is how it begins.

US has secret weapons - Trump

The president has warned China and other trade partners against escalating beyond the trade war.

President Donald Trump has boasted about US military power and weapons that "nobody has any idea" about, in response to concerns that his tariff war with China could spiral out of control.

Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% on Wednesday, in retaliation for countermeasures imposed by Beijing. China has yet to respond to the latest hike, though the Ministry of Commerce previously vowed to fight the trade war "to the end."

Asked whether he was concerned about Beijing's next moves - and a potential "escalation beyond the trade war" - Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping is "one of the very smart people of the world" who would never "allow that to happen."

Most Americans now have negative view of Israel - under-50 GOP support craters

While the Trump administration earnestly redistributes billions of dollars of American wealth to Israel, that country's immensely-destructive war in Gaza appears to be taking a growing toll on its support among Americans. According to the latest Pew Research survey, a majority of Americans now have an unfavorable view of Israel. In a finding that will cause the greatest alarm in Israeli government offices and at US-based pro-Israel organizations, there's now a huge generational divide within the GOP ranks.

53% of Americans now have an unfavorable view of Israel, thanks to the share of Americans with dim views of Israel surging by 11 points in three years. The comparison point is Pew's survey in March 2022, seven months before the Oct 7 Hamas invasion of southern Israel sparked a massive military response that's killed more than 50,000 Palestinians - about a third of them under 18 - according to health officials in Gaza. Over the same span, the proportion of Americans with "very unfavorable" views of Israel has almost doubled from 10% to 19%.

Comment: If Americans are finally waking up, to what end will Netanyahu go to counteract this turn of response?

The wicked flee

Habba

"No more government in the shadows."
- - Mike Benz
The decade-long treasonous hectoring of Mr. Trump keeps on coming, you understand, for the simple reason that there have been absolutely zero consequences for any of the vicious rogues behind it. Not so much as a rap on the knuckles for seeking to overthrow a president, steal elections, hide high crimes, rob the treasury, and recklessly frame the innocent. And suddenly this week, as startling as a mythic goddess of justice riding a spring zephyr, comes a brisk demonstration of exactly what-to-do.

Days ago, Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey ordered his state police to not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement officers (ICE) — a nice bit of grandstanding for a guy seeking to occupy the Democratic Party's leadership vacuum. So, Thursday night, newly-appointed US Attorney for the New Jersey federal district, Alina Habba, opened a criminal investigation against Gov. Murphy for "obstruction and concealment." That means, possibly, jail. Badda-bing! This ain't no foolin' around.

The reason the Democrat pols and their activist agents pule and mewl about "retribution" is because they know they are guilty of so many manifest crimes against the country and against decency, that a fair system would have jailed or hanged them by now. They evaded their reckonings only because their own filthy mitts gripped the levers of justice until very recently.

Kiev broke energy ceasefire five times in 24 hours - Moscow

The US-mediated moratorium was intended to safeguard crucial infrastructure on both Ukrainian and Russian-controlled territory.

Ukrainian forces have launched five separate attacks against Russian energy infrastructure in 24 hours, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Friday. The strikes are the latest breach by Kiev of a US-mediated ceasefire on such attacks, the ministry said.

The listed incidents included shelling against elements of the Russian power grid and a drone strike against a transformer station, all causing disruptions in electricity supply, according to the ministry.

A partial ceasefire was announced by Russia on March 18, after President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump. Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky has publicly supported the idea, but also complained that Russia wouldn't agree to a full ceasefire. Putin cited difficulties with monitoring violations along the lengthy front line and the potential for Kiev to use the pause for military build-up, explaining his concerns about a full truce. Russia continues to honor the ceasefire on energy strikes despite Ukrainian breaches, the Defense Ministry said on Friday.

European elitist rulers are hyping the Russian threat and war for political survival

EU Leaders!

The elitist rulers of the European Union are proof of the time-honored adage that war and militarism are a convenient escape from internal problems.

And the European Union, as well as hangers-on like the doughty British, have an abundance of intrinsic, structural problems tantamount to a political meltdown.

Over decades, the 27-member European bloc has evolved into a centralized superstate structure in which policy decisions have become wholly decoupled from the democratic preferences of its 450 million citizens.

Our columnist, Ian Proud, in a recent article, explored how the EU has lost its way from its original vision as a friendly association of European neighbors to one of an unwieldy and unresponsive bureaucracy fixated on ideological conformity to its core.

As Ian Proud comments: "The sole raison d'être of the European Union today appears to seek the strategic defeat of a neighboring country - Russia - despite the enormous political and economic cost to European people who are denied a say through wall-to-wall propaganda."

He adds this cautionary note: "Ever-greater centralization of powers in Europe will inevitably leave member states feeling disenfranchised by the removal of sovereignty and the attack on their identity. This will continue to drive political dissent and pressure for disintegration that we can already see in Germany, France, Hungary, and other places."

Many other observers consider that the EU is heading towards a systemic collapse over the next few years owing to a combination of top-heavy concentrated political power, democratic deficit, economic malaise, and a hyper-militarized albeit ineffectual state.

During an off-the-record panel, AIPAC's CEO detailed his organization's grooming of Trump's top national security officials, and how his group's "access" ensures they continue to follow Israel's agenda.

The Grayzone has obtained audio of an off-the-record session from the 2025 Congressional Summit of AIPAC, the main US lobbying arm of the state of Israel. Recorded by an attendee of the panel discussion, the audio features AIPAC's new CEO, Elliott Brandt, describing how his organization has cultivated influence with three top national security officials in the Trump administration - Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Director Mike Waltz, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe - and how it believes it can gain "access" to their internal discussions.

Joining Brandt on the panel was Dana Stroul, formerly the highest ranking civilian overseeing Middle East issues in the Biden administration's Department of Defense. Stroul made it clear that defending Israel's strategic imperatives from within the US government was a top priority, arguing that Washington should deepen its "mutually beneficial" special relationship with its "strong partner" in Tel Aviv.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard established a new task force charged with restoring transparency and accountability in the intelligence community, Fox News Digital has learned.

The group, dubbed the Director's Initiative Group (DIG), is starting by investigating weaponization within the intelligence community.

Officials said the group will also work to root out politicization and expose unauthorized disclosures of classified intelligence. In addition, it will work to declassify information "that serves a public interest."

So far, the Director's Initiative Group has reviewed documents for potential declassification, including information related to the origins of COVID-19 and the John F. Kennedy Jr., Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassination files; the original Trump-Russia investigation; anomalous health incidents; the Biden administration's domestic surveillance and censorship against Americans, and more.

Lavrov: Ukraine has betrayed its history

Ukraine has "betrayed" its own history by allowing the West to bring a Nazi regime to power in Kiev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said. In an interview for the TASS Children project released on Wednesday, the diplomat said the West's actions were deliberate, aimed at bringing about a "strategic defeat" of Russia.

"The forgetting of history, their spiritual and moral values, their roots, if you like, all this has become one of the main reasons for what we are now seeing in Ukraine," he said, referring to the ongoing conflict, which he described as one that pitted the authorities against their own people from the outset.

Lavrov accused the West of trying to rewrite history by "instilling oblivion of Russian roots" and promoting ideas in Ukrainian society that led to what he called "social amnesia."

Pentagon reportedly considering withdrawal of thousands of troops from Europe

Senior Defense Department officials are considering a proposal to withdraw as many as 10,000 troops from Eastern Europe, sparking concern on both continents that it would embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to six U.S. and European officials who have been briefed on the matter.

The units under consideration are part of the 20,000 personnel the Biden administration deployed in 2022 to strengthen the defenses of countries bordering Ukraine after the Russian invasion. The numbers are still being discussed, but the proposal could involve removing up to half of the forces sent by Biden.

Internal discussions about reducing American troop levels in Romania and Poland come at a time when President Donald Trump is trying to persuade Putin to agree to a ceasefire.
