This tiny island nation proves that the West only believes in its own 'spheres of influence'

Australia and the US believe the Solomon Islands must not be allowed to partner up with China, showing a selective respect for self-determination

Russia is bad. There is no excuse for attacking Ukraine, and the argument that it was a strategic imperative to stop NATO's encroachment is just propaganda, right? That's what every source in the mainstream media will tell you. But oddly enough, that logic never seems to apply when western countries perceive rival states to be encroaching on their own peripheries, and there's been no bigger example of that than as to how American and Australian political classes have reacted to the now signed "Bilateral security agreement" between China and the Solomon Islands, a small archipelago which exists not far from Papua New Guinea.

The deal was confirmed this week, despite Australia and the US having piled on scores of official visits in a bid to try and halt it. This has been combined with a media narrative of extreme paranoia claiming, without due evidence, that China is set to build a naval base on the islands and poses a direct military threat to Australia in turn. This has produced some hysterical commentaries, with a founder of The Diplomat Magazine even literally calling for bombing and regime change in the island nation.

Comment: We are witnessing the birth of a new world. The slap in the face to the self-assured West in Syria and Ukraine is part of the collapse of Western neocolonialism and fascism and the birth of a new and better multipolar world where all countries are equal partners.

As always that process is very painful and bloody, but one has to go through it to get to the other side.

Ukraine accuses mayor of treason for accepting Russian 'occupation' and humanitarian aid

Ukrainian authorities have cited the acceptance of humanitarian aid from Russia as one of the grounds to charge the mayor of a town in Kharkov Region with treason on Friday. Ivan Stolbovoy, the mayor of Balakleya, is accused of urging the city council to cooperate with Russian troops and announcing that they would be distributing food.

The office of the prosecutor general of Ukraine charged Stolbovoy, alleging that he "chose to side with the enemy" when the Russian military took control of Balakleya on March 28. He agreed to continue as mayor under the "occupation regime" and accepted humanitarian aid from Russian troops, the prosecutors said.

Brussels could encourage Kiev to refrain from "massive shelling" of Donbass and from committing "other gross violations" of international law, Russian President Vladimir Putin told European Council President Charles Michel on Thursday.

During a lengthy phone call, held amid the ongoing Russian offensive in Ukraine, the two leaders discussed the latest developments on the ground, including Putin's decision to call off the assault on the Azovstal plant in Mariupol and Moscow's efforts to protect civilians, the Kremlin said in a statement.

Among other things, Putin brought Michel's attention to the "irresponsible statements of the EU representatives about the need to resolve the situation in Ukraine by military means," apparently referring to a recent controversial statement by the top EU diplomat Josep Borrel.

Biden announces another $800 million in military assistance for Ukraine

President Biden on Thursday announced another $800 million in military aid for Ukraine, including heavy artillery and ammunition, as the country continues to fight to defend itself against Russia's multi-front war.

Biden, who spoke from the East Room, said the assistance would include heavily artillery weapons, dozens of howitzers, 144,000 rounds of ammunition for those howitzers, and tactical drones. And he added:
"To modernize Teddy Roosevelt's famous advice, sometimes we will speak softly and carry a large Javelin, because we're sending a lot of those in as well."
The president last week had authorized $800 million in weapons, ammunition and other security assistance. The $1.6 billion he approved this week and last is in addition to the more than $1 billion the administration had already said it was sending to Ukraine.

But the president said the funding authorized by Congress for Ukraine has almost been exhausted, and that he would therefore be sending a supplemental funding request to Capitol Hill next week. He called on Congress to pass it quickly, saying the funding would allow the U.S. to keep assistance flowing without interruption.

Question

Why isn't the West sanctioning Turkey for its special operation in Iraq?

Turk gunner

The recent Russophobic frenzy by Washington and its Western allies over Russia's special operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine with more and more anti-Russian sanctions imposed each passing day, makes one involuntarily wonder: why then doesn't the West react in the same way to another special operation - the one Turkey is conducting on Iraqi territory? And how, in fact, are the two special operations different in their international treatment?

As you know, Turkey launched another (sic!) military special operation in Northern Iraq on April 18, striking the hideouts, bunkers, caves and warehouses of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The country's Minister of Defense Khulusi Akar, said:
"We're determined to save our noble nation from the scourge of terrorism. Our struggle will continue until the last terrorist is neutralized."
The Kurdistan Workers' Party is one of the major political forces of the Kurds, a people who live in several Middle Eastern countries: south-eastern Turkey, north-western Iran, northern Iraq and northern Syria. The PKK calls for creating a Kurdish autonomy in Turkey, for which the Turkish authorities have declared the organization "terrorist," but this is only Ankara's position.

Comment: Turkey is tolerated when useful to the USA.

Assange extradition shows 'hypocritical nature of US - China

Beijing says the US has presented the true face of its 'freedom of speech and the press' rhetoric.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hit out against the order to extradite WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange to the US, issued by a UK court earlier this week, saying that it represents the "hypocritical" nature of the American government.

The Australian born journalist has been held in a British prison for over 36 months. Before that, he spent seven years holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, under threat of arrest by the UK authorities. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin claimed during a press conference on Thursday:
"This is the true face of the US 'freedom of speech and the press.' The extradition of Assange to the US can lay bare the hypocritical nature of the US government better than the WikiLeaks revelations."
She also noted that everything Assange has gone through ever since he reported on alleged US war crimes, tells people:
"Those who expose the so-called atrocities of other countries are heroes, while those who expose the scandals of the US are criminals."

Ukraine threatens 'terrorist' attack on Crimean Bridge

Ukrainian official said if Kiev had the chance, it would have struck the Crimean Bridge long ago and would still do so, if the possibility arises

Russia has responded to recent threats by Ukraine's armed forces about a potential strike on the Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula to the rest of the country. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday:
"Such statements are nothing less than the announcement of a possible terrorist act. This is unacceptable. There are many signs here of deeds that are subject to legal verification and subsequent punishment."
It comes comes after Alexey Danilov, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, stated on Wednesday that if Kiev had the chance, it would have struck the Crimean Bridge long ago, and that its armed forces would do it now if possible.

Russia closes consulates of three Baltic states, expels staff members

Russia says it has shut down consulates of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia in different parts of the country and requested that their staff members leave in retaliation for recent diplomatic moves against Moscow by the three Baltic nations.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on April 21 that it has told Riga that the Latvian consulates in St. Petersburg and Pskov must be closed, while Tallinn was informed that the Estonian Consulate in St. Petersburg and its office in Pskov will be shut. Vilnius has been notified that the Lithuanian consulate in St. Petersburg is also to be shuttered, the statement said.

The announcement comes days after Latvia and Estonia each ordered the closure of two Russian consulates over Russia's ongoing unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, while Lithuania expelled Russia's ambassador over Moscow's aggression against Kyiv.

In March, Moscow expelled 10 diplomats from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia after the three Baltic nations joined other EU members in a move to expel Russian diplomats over the invasion of Ukraine. Earlier on April 21, Estonia joined Latvia and Lithuania in banning the display of the symbols "Z" and "V," which are used by supporters of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Lawmakers in Estonia and Latvia also adopted resolutions on April 21, accusing Russia of genocide against the Ukrainian people.

Pepe Escobar on Big Tech's 'cancel culture' love affair

Cancel culture is inbuilt in the techno-feudalist project: conform to the hegemonic narrative, or else. Journalism that does not conform must be taken down.

This month, several of us - Scott Ritter, myself, ASB Military News, among others - were canceled from Twitter. The - unstated - reason: we were debunking the officially approved narrative of the Russia/NATO/Ukraine war.

As with all things Big Tech, that was predictable. I lasted only seven months on Twitter. And that was long enough. Contacts in California had told me I was on their radar because the account grew too fast, and had enormous reach, especially after the start of Operation Z.

I celebrated the cancelation by experiencing an aesthetic illumination in front of the Aegean Sea, at the home of Herodotus, the Father of History. Additionally, it was heart-warming to be recognized by the great George Galloway in his moving tribute to targets of the new McCarthyism.

'Operation Thermostat': Energy rationing & the pivot from Ukraine to climate?

Power Plant
© Off-Guardian
Italy is officially becoming the first country to start rationing energy after cutting their supply of Russian gas and oil.

From next month, until at least March 2023, public buildings across the nation will be banned from running air conditioning at lower than 25 degrees, or heating higher than 19 degrees.

The plan, termed "Operation Thermostat" in the press, is being sold as a way for ordinary people to show "solidarity" with the people of Ukraine, with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi saying:
Do we want to have peace or do we want to have the air conditioning on?"
I'm not exactly sure how adjusting your thermostat is going to achieve 'peace', but hey we're living in the age of sentimental manipulation over reason, so - just believe.

For example, the Guardian is illustrating the story with pro-peace artwork allegedly done by Italian schoolchildren (in English, for some reason).

There's no talk yet of this kind of energy-rationing rule extending to private businesses or homes, but a marker has been set down. Expect other nations to follow suit.

After that of course will come the opinion pieces asking questions like "we rationed gas to fight Putin, why not climate change?", and headlines saying that "Europe-wide gas rationing was good for the planet" or something similar.

...Oh wait, it's already happening.
