Virtue and Terror: How the New Normal was created

"If the mainspring of popular government in peacetime is virtue, the mainspring of popular government during a revolution is both virtue and terror; virtue, without which terror is fatal; terror, without which virtue is powerless. Terror is nothing but swift, severe, inflexible justice; it is therefore an emanation of virtue. It is less a principle in itself than a consequence of the general principle of democracy, applied to our nation's most pressing needs."
-Maximilien Robespierre, On the Principles of Political Morality, 1794

The past three years have exposed the structural flaw in Western democracy with more disastrous consequences for its populations than at any time in recent history.

It's generally known that democracy, from the Ancient Greek dēmokratia, means 'rule by the people'; but it is perhaps less widely known that the fifth-century city-state of Athens on which the West modelled its democracy was a slave-owning society in which only adult males and hereditary citizens comprising maybe 10-15 per cent of the population had the right to vote.

The universal suffrage we have in the UK today was only attained through centuries of political struggle, and is predicated, at least in principle, on an equally universal education. One of the arguments against extending rights of suffrage that were originally restricted to landowners, then to property owners, then to heads of households, then to men over twenty-one, then to propertied women over thirty, and only eventually made a universal right, was that according equal votes to individuals with vastly unequal levels of education, influence and understanding of policy was politically suicidal.

The counter argument, which eventually won out, is that those who, because of their wealth or education or age or gender, had the right to vote, were unlikely to do so against their interests, making their political franchise a guarantee of political hegemony.

The eventual concession to universal suffrage, however, gave those who grudgingly conceded it ample time to turn this threat to their advantage, and make the vastly expanded electorate the object of demographically targeted political strategies. It was from this necessity, and from the opportunity it afforded, that the modern mass media were born.

Best of the Web: The Ukraine hawk heading the European Commission has a Nazi pedigree she does not want you to know about

Her father Ernst Albrecht, President of the German state of Lower Saxony from 1978 to 1990, brought unrehabilitated Nazis into his administration and carried out a black-flag terrorist operation designed to discredit the left-wing Red Army Faction.

In the wake of the Russo-Ukrainian war, terms like "European values" have come back into the mainstream. One of the people who has been most responsible for this is Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission who is now a nearly omnipresent figure in the media.

According to Ursula, "European values" represent only the highest attributes of humankind: freedom, justice, solidarity, and rule of law.

China plans to present proposal for Ukraine-Russia peace talks

Wang Yi
© EPA-EFE/JOHANNES SIMONChinese foreign affairs Minister Wang Yi speaks during the 2023 Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Munich, Germany, 18 February 2023.
China will present its own proposal for a political settlement of Russia's war in Ukraine, the country's top diplomat Wang Yi told the Munich Security Conference on Saturday (18 February).

Addressing the global gathering of top politicians and security officials, Wang Yi lamented a new "Cold War mentality", stressing that Beijing would stand on the side of peace and dialogue.

He announced his country's support for peace talks, which will come in the form of a position paper on the political settlement of the war.

Comment: Since the West has admitted that it, along with Ukraine, had no intention of following the Minsk peace protocol, Russia and China will undoubtedly be prepared for any and all eventualities in a peace proposal is put forward.

The FBI said on Friday it contained and is investigating a cyber incident against its computer network.

Why it matters: The bureau believes the incident involved a bureau computer system used in its investigations into images of child sexual exploitation, CNN first reported.

What they're saying: "The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to gain additional information," the bureau said in a statement to Axios.
  • "This is an isolated incident that has been contained. As this is an ongoing investigation the FBI does not have further comment to provide at this time," it continued.

Comment: Meanwhile the FBI has made no further comment on just who was on Epstein's client list.

The horrifying endgame in Ukraine

In yesterday's issue, I addressed the biggest and most complex topic on the geopolitical landscape today — China.

But today I'm discussing what is by far the most alarming topic on the geopolitical landscape today. That's the war in Ukraine and the dangers of escalation.

I've written extensively about two facets of the war in Ukraine that you don't hear from legacy media in the United States or U.K. The first is that Russia is actually winning the war.

U.S. outlets such as The New York Times (a channel for the State Department) and The Washington Post (a channel for the CIA) report endlessly about how Russian plans have failed, about how incompetent they are about how the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have pushed back Russians in the Donbass, and how NATO weapons such as U.S. Abrams tanks, U.K. Challenger tanks and German Leopard tanks will turn the tide against Russia soon.

This is all nonsense. None of it is true.

Comment: The means will not justify 'The End'.

Why the China-Iran partnership matters

President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran has concluded an official state visit to China, where he met with his counterpart in Beijing, Xi Jinping.

Ahead of the trip, Raisi published an article in China's most elite party newspaper, the People's Daily, speaking out against "unilateralism", "violent measures" and sanctions, which both countries believe to be the main causes of instability in the world today.

The visit comes at a critical juncture in the two nations' geopolitical prospects, as the editorial alludes to. Both countries are facing intensifying pressure from the United States, which strives to contain and militarily "checkmate" them. Having long since given up any pretence of upholding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Tehran, which Donald Trump withdrew from, the US has imposed heavy sanctions on the country in a bid to try and cripple its economic and military development.

Comment: Two choices are obvious: Cooperate or disintegrate.

Betting on Ukraine victory was 'suicidal' - Seymour Hersh

The US and its allies should have attempted to reach an agreement with Moscow as their belief that Ukraine can win a conflict against Russia is "suicidal," iconic American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has argued.

Speaking in a YouTube interview with the Consortium News outlet on Friday, Hersh accused the Biden administration of making "so many bad mistakes," adding that "it's impossible to believe just how dumb this leadership was."

The former Pulitzer Prize winner insisted:
"It was suicidal to think you can win that war, that Ukraine can win the war [against Russia]. There's just too much corruption. That was a very, very bad decision. We should have been pushing for peace, we should have made an agreement."
US President Joe Biden basically "blew off NATO in Europe" by telling allies that he is backing Ukraine with its "totally corrupt government," Hersh added. The journalist also pointed out how Kiev glorifies Stepan Bandera, "the great pro-Nazi who killed Jews like crazy during World War II."

"It's just silly not to right away assure the Russian government that we weren't interested in making Ukraine a member of NATO," Hersh stated, referring to long-standing concerns in Moscow. "NATO didn't want Ukraine anyway because of the corruption."

Doctor notices something crucial missing from Biden's bill of health

President Biden was deemed to be "healthy" and "vigorous" in his latest physical conducted Thursday but medical experts pointed out his doctor didn't mention the president's mental status.

Speaking with Fox News Digital after examining the results of the exam, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a family and emergency medical professional and a Fox News contributor, questioned how Biden performed on his "mini mental status exam."

"How did he do on that? What was his score? I would like to know," she said.
"Physical mental emotional health are all as equally important. The job of the presidency is a very demanding stressful job. We must ensure our leader is physically mentally and emotionally capable, especially when it comes to, decisions, regarding life and death and the overall health, safety, and well-being of our nation. Biden will be our oldest sitting president. We need a president who is sharp, shrewd, who has the cognitive stamina and the mental acumen to lead our great country."

Comment: Biden has undeniable deniability. Tomorrow he won't remember what 'he' did today.

Stoltenberg sets condition for Kiev to join NATO

Munich Security Conference • February 18, 2023
Ukraine must "prevail as a sovereign, independent state" before it can formally join NATO, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Saturday, despite Kiev already considering itself a de-facto member of the Western bloc.

Stoltenberg told a panel at the Munich Security Conference:
"NATO's position on membership for Ukraine is unchanged. We agreed back in 2008 that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance and that is still our position.

"Of course, what matters now is to ensure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent state. Because without having Ukraine as a sovereign and independent state, there is no way to discuss any kind of relationship between NATO and Ukraine in the future."
He added that this discussion would take place when the current conflict in Ukraine is resolved.

Comment: Ukraine has been purposefully set up and thoroughly played to never resolve this 'dispute'.
