There are more than 12,000 species of planthopper worldwide, and their secret communication device - dubbed the "snapping organ" - was found by researchers led by zoologist Leonidas-Romanos Davranoglou from the University of Oxford in the UK while examining one of them, Agalmatium bilobum.
Locating the organ answered a key question about the group. How could each insect produce a sustained thrumming vibration along plant stems when its musculature was simply not capable of moving fast enough to produce it?
The answer, Davranoglou and colleagues found, lies in the mechanics of the snapping organ.
It functions through the explosive release stored elastic energy. A catapult provides a reasonable approximation, except that for the planthoppers the release forms one half of a high-speed cycle of capture and release that results in a shaking movement of the abdomen and the narrowcast of mating signals.
In announcing the discovery of the organ - which has analogues in other insect species, such as cicadas, but is structurally unique - the scientists are happy to concede that the result was initially accidental.
"I was studying 3D images of planthoppers that I had collected using X-ray imaging in a particle accelerator, trying to understand the evolutionary relationships between different groups," says Davranoglou.
"But as I dissected the bugs in virtual reality on my computer, I immediately realised that I was looking at something entirely new, so decided to investigate further."
A research trip to Athens followed, where hundreds of planthoppers from different species were collected and taken back to the lab in Oxford. The organ was found to be present in all of them. Acoustic engineers were called in to assist.
Davranoglou and colleagues suggest that the organ is ancient in origin, developing before planthopper lineages started to diverge about 250 million years ago.
The research, published in the journal PLOS Biology, could have significant ramifications.
"These insects include several economically important pest species, including the brown planthopper, which is one of the most serious pests on rice in the developing world," says co-author Beth Mortimer.
"Understanding how these insects signal to each other may help in disrupting their communication channels or detecting their calls. Silent to the ear, the planthoppers have come up with their own novel way to communicate with potential mates. You could say it's their form of Snapchat."

The different idea about god are as varied as different ideas about self. That this is so ought not to be surprising as gods were held to be the powers behind events in the world, and when the world changed to a more stable sense of order, the development of the idea of consciousness expanded to philosophical and scientific connections.
So of course you can make your own version of yourself, your fellow beings, your world and your Creator - and be-live through the lens of your making as if your judgement and reality are the same. At least for a time.
That we CAN make images and worship them (whether they be cars, money, power or sex) is a testimony to having creative ability LIKE our Creator - but that we are seeking freedom, safety or communication in temporal THINGS or circumstances. The extension of the qualities of freedom safety and communication are aligned with our being - and the source-nature of our being - regardless whether we call it anything or not.
Letting forms and names replace discerned qualities is basically how identity theft is phished.
Hence the old warning to not make an image of God, because image is image and God is God.
I understand why many do not want to associate themselves with the word 'god' because of what it has been used for and become associated with. But that doesn't mean a dissociating redefinition is free of the same deceits, or that we are not supported in exactly the same way, as when we operated a different set of beliefs.
Just as the Sun shines on the just and the unjust, the law and nature of mind is not actually changed by what we hold as our self-definition or belief - but of course our perception and experience is completely dependent on our current sense of self-reality.
The origin of the idea of gods is the origin of the activation and development of the subjective (dissociating) consciousness - which is associated with Cosmic events and principally the Planets.
A collective amnesia operates the mind in which such archetypal themes are re-enacted over and over and over again. Not unlike Narcissus entranced in his own image.
If evolution is totally random then common design between species would have to have happened before any divergence .. unless you also buy into the theory of Convergent evolution
