Thousands of people including children gathered at a sport stadium to watch the execution of 10 criminals in China. The men had been sentenced to death by two different courts and were driven into the stadium in front of the baying crowd.
Seven of the men had been found guilty of drug dealing, while three others were facing the death penalty for murder or robbery. The men arrived in the stadium and had their sentence read out to the audience, although it is thought the criminals were aware of their fate before they arrived.
Some in the crowd were visibly upset and the public execution in Lufeng, southern China has sparked debate across the country.
This is the third execution held in public since June, according to the
Metro , with local authorities saying they are being carried out publicly to educate people against committing crimes.
In November three drug dealers were killed in front of 1,000 people and in June another 10,000 people witnessed the execution of 13 drug dealers.
Public executions were held in the US until 1936 and the last public hanging in the UK was nearly 150 years ago in 1868.
China carries out the most executions each year, although countries like Iran have higher per capita rates. The country uses two types of methods, firing squad and lethal injection.
Lethal injections are mainly used for what is deemed 'economic crimes' such as corruption and fraud, whereas the firing squad is reserve for murder or drug dealing.
