The findings, published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, challenge the idea that casual pot smoking is relatively harmless, researchers said.
The study, which was conducted by Northwestern Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and funded in part by anti-drug government agencies, found major abnormalities directly related to the amount of weed smoked each week.
"Some of these people only used marijuana to get high once or twice a week," said the study's co-author, Dr. Hans Breiter. "People think a little recreational use shouldn't cause a problem, if someone is doing OK with work or school. Our data directly says this is not the case."
The scientists examined the nucleus accumbens and the amygdala, which are areas of the brain associated with addiction, in the brains of casual marijuana users and non-users.
They measured the volume, shape, and density of the gray matter - where most cells are located in brain tissue - and found these regions were abnormally altered for at least two of the structural metrics.
Those changes indicate their brains were adapting to low-level marijuana exposure, the researchers said.
"These are core, fundamental structures of the brain," said study co-author Anne Blood. "They form the basis for how you assess positive and negative features about things in the environment and make decisions about them."
The findings match those from animal studies that show rats' brains rewire and form new connections when they're given tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana.
"Drugs of abuse can cause more dopamine release than natural rewards like food, sex, and social interaction," said lead author Jodi Gilman. "In those you also get a burst of dopamine but not as much as in many drugs of abuse. That is why drugs take on so much salience, and everything else loses its importance."The researchers used neuroimaging to examine the brains of from Boston-area colleges between the ages of 18 and 25, including 20 young adults who smoked pot and 20 who did not.
Each sample had nine men and 11 women, and they each underwent a psychiatric interview to confirm they were not dependent on marijuana or any other illegal drugs.
The researchers were unable to measure the THC content of the pot smoked by study participants, but marijuana is much stronger today - at about 5 percent to 9 percent THC content - than in the 1960s and 1970s, when THC content was typically 1 percent to 3 percent.
Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the U.S., which about 18.9 million users, according to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Mental Health.
The study's authors noted that its use continued to rise in popularity among adolescents, particularly as social acceptance grows and its legal status changes in many states.
But researchers said their findings suggest marijuana is not as safe as proponents claim - particularly for younger people.
"I've developed a severe worry about whether we should be allowing anybody under age 30 to use pot unless they have a terminal illness and need it for pain," Breiter said.
The research was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Habitual would be a mild adjective to describe my consumption of the sacred herb.
While I would agree my motivation in certain areas of "life" has been greatly diminished as a result. Of course it totally destroyed any desire to help fund the system of rape and murder called government. Also I found a profound lack of desire to attain material wealth. In fact whenever I see filthy rich or every slightly "well-to-do" people I feel intense revulsion.
It breaks my heart to see the commercialization of this plant or any other for that matter. Just means taxes. Freakin taxes on a prohibited plant the government has been using to destroy peoples lives for far too long.
Grow your own and when they come to arrest you make them kill you. Otherwise this stupid carnival just keeps going..
In this culture (21st century USA) the capacity for intelligent thought might be considered a "brain abnormality".

I have news: There are hybrids out there that exceed 20% THC.
What happens when one kicks the habit?
The brain is able to adjust over time, depending on the potency and length of use.
It is, after all, a natural substance. There's a lot worse out there. Just listen to the commercials peddling the pills of today and note the side effects.
What can never be healed: The memory of the hypocrisy of the War on Drugs and the profiteers behind it.
It's worse now than it ever was, and so the irritation continues to rub the wounds raw.
The hypocrisy of this legalization effort is that they are demonizing tobacco/nicotine which has a chemical basis for HELPING the brain, re: memory etc.
MJ is great for those in pain or those who have other related issues, but is NOT A MIRACLE DRUG.
I agree wholeheartedly that pharmaceutical drugs are horrible... that is where the science has been hidden as to what is going on chemically behind the scenes, because the studies are not long term enough to show the effects.
"I've developed a severe worry about whether we should be allowing anybody under age 30 to use pot unless they have a terminal illness and need it for pain," Breiter said.
In other words, don't trust anyone UNDER 30!

Another biased article written by corporate, pharmaceutical whores.
I wonder why the mass media is demonizing tobacco/nicotine while promoting legalization of marijuana (and ignoring alcohol's bad effects)?
I see a lot of comments that seem to want to dismiss science when it is not convenient. Ok, if you don't agree with this study, go ahead and check the papers and see where they went wrong (like the tobacco studies showed to be flawed). However, you CANNOT dismiss the possible long term effects which MJ smokers seem to never want to consider (because "it's not addictive" etc).
All I know is that there is a PUSH FOR MJ legalization, and you have to wonder why they are doing this while demonizing tobacco/nicotine...
Irony: when a study comes out that says smoking tobacco can be good for the brain, people are up in arms and say that is false... The science talks, and it is up to us to learn WHAT exactly is going on chemically.
(and yes, it HELPS the brain's memory and doesn't ALTER it, much like a supplement).
That there are so many people armed with scientific studies and backed by militant governmental organizations caring for my well being .
Since we all agree that science has answered every question. We all know that each and every human being reacts physiologically and emotionally in exactly the same way to every form of stimulus.
There must be some way to make the stoners and smokers understand that everybody is just concerned about their health and mental state. I know more laws and jails. More bombs and medications. More agencies and organizations and studies and conclusions and findings and more laws. And taxes.
I use marijuana on a daily basis and I am, in my humble opinion, not an idiot and the only motivation that I have lost, same as an earlier poster, is the desire to fit in with our diseased and self-gratifying American society. I have absolutely no desire to garner wealth, I have no desire to cheat my neighbors in order to inflate my own self-worth. All I want to do is get by and help my fellow man whenever I can.
At the end of a long day dealing with all of the over-medicated self-righteous pr*cks out there, it is a blessing to me that I can come home and light up. Then all those frustrations I have been dealing throughout the day can be dealt with in a much more positive light. Marijuana does not allow me to blind myself to the world, it helps me to gain a better perspective of how silly it is to allow people to irk me.
Marijuana, if used in its proper implementation, shines a light on our inner selves. It allows for positive self reflection while dulling the sense of self-righteousness. It gives us an avenue of reflection that is not clouded with selfish reasoning.
I constantly thank the Universe for marijuana and its stabilizing effects and I have been fighting for its legalization since the early nineties.
Anti Drug Government Agencies funded this study, and the study was done by their Federally funded university cohorts. What other outcome would a thoughtful & awake person expect from them but still more condemnation of cannabis? Our government NEVER lies to us, right? Scientists, funded by the government, would never lie to us, right?
I've seen and researched far too many real, first hand reports of people's health issues, seizures and even cancer helped tremendously and even cured through use of cannabis to place any faith in what my government says to the contrary!
So, more comments repeating the same "party line". Ok, yes governmental studies do lie... I can agree with that.
But, would any of you defend nicotine? I know quite a few MJ smokers who think tobacco/nicotine is deadly, according to the studies, but want to ignore studies when it comes to their "sacred herb" (who deemed it sacred? not the native americans! They used hallucinogens SPARINGLY, and tobacco more often).
No, there is much wishful thinking, throw the baby out with the bathwater???
As for this study (which has been so quickly dismissed), as been said in psychology studies too, this study found a similar result... AFFECTING THE EMOTIONS. Yeah, depressants tend to do that, like alcohol too (but alcohol is much more harmful).
And just for anecdotal evidence, to the extreme of the people who I know who smoke a lot- they tend to have issues expressing their emotions, especially anger.
Now think about it, WHY IS THERE A MOVEMENT TO LEGALIZE NOW?
Why not keep people "happy" and not in touch with their negative emotions?
Motivations, well, that's another story.
will probably read this but I am going to tear this BS article a new one. This will take a while so sorry in advance for taking up so much space.
First I would like to explain that I used to smoke and quite a bit for about 12 years but decided that pot was not a necessary substance for me and so I quit cold turkey and not surprisingly was easy as hell to do. I have been "sober" for 4 months now and I cannot understand what on earth the writers of this article are talking about. In fact if your read this article they actually don't say what their conclusions are or how it affects the brain, only that it does affect the brain. Well no duhh. They then go on a rant about old pot and new pot in a way that is totally ungrounded in facts and sounds like a eugenics piece from the 1930s. There are two basic types of pot which are sativa and indica. Sativa produces a more active daily functioning high where as an Indica produces a more 'sit back and relax' high. Look up the history of say the strand known as "blueberry". You will find that it is an incredibly old strand that dates back to the old 'hippy times'. This strand is still very popular because it is awesome. A lot of the THC traits that come from a particular genetics has a lot to do with how it was grown (believe it or not it takes a green thumb to do it). These green thumbs came about from years of trial and error. This article makes ridiculous claims about new pot and old pot yet it is so unprofessional that it couldn't even give accurate numbers of THC count and furthermore just told us to take their word on it. Their idea is like calling a roma tomato more tomato-ee than a different kind because of its genetics. When you breed pot with pot, guess what you get? That's right just pot. Not super pot. Believing otherwise is called eugenics BS and it simply isn't true.
Now what should I even say about the entire 20 pot smokers involved in this "study". The pot smoked was not tested for any sort of content be it THC or other contaminants as they indirectly stated. I can only hope that the scientist who created this study were as high as the participants because I have never seen this lack of control in a lab setting. There actually was no scientific test to speak of other than the subjects testimonial that they were smoking pot. 40 people by the way is always going to lead to a statistically insignificant result (notice that they didn't care about other legal or prescribed medications that could skew the results any which way). What a travesty of a test, and with no apparent results. Reading this article was about as bad as watching one of the feds commercials. Join the marines say no to cigarettes and make sure you vote.
[Link] Just scroll down to MJ section and see. I've seen what he described in friends...
Anything that numbs you (or hyper excites you) artificially, is not good for your emotional growth.
Again, CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHY MJ IS BEING PROMOTED AND TOBACCO DEMONIZED?
Follow the money, you can say. Ok, but then why are they TRYING TO STOP TOBACCO SMOKING???
I think the PTB wants MJ to be used more, it keeps people less in touch with their anger, especially in this twisted time of lies and manipulation.
So, that's my take on it.
Having read all the comments it seems literally everyone is emotionally hooked and vociferously defending an addictive habit, regardless of the veracity (or not) of the article. I have smoked a long time and i see all these effects in myself. There is definitely demotivation but it is subtle, and you really need to compare your sober self to your stoner self to see the effect there. The dulling of emotions, however, is NOT subtle. The longer you have been smoking, the harder it will be to see, and I observe that here.
I also have very good friends who are LONG time stoners (like since they were 13) and critical thinking whilst stoned is impaired. See my posts from a couple months ago, which I felt I had to apologize for. You emotionally react very easily. Which seems hypocritical from the effect of emotional dulling, but it exists.
I believe tobacco is demonized because it GREATLY helps with critical thinking, and MJ is now being allowed because it interferes with same.
Remember, guys, if (as you all agree) it is a MEDICINE, then you should only be partaking of it when you are SICK.
They show crazed teens smoking pot why don't they show the banker that's taking care of your hard earned money, point made, how about showing what happens to your brain after constantly taking the drugs they give you nowadays for whatever. Maybe our brains need a little rearranging because I don't think anyone is really thinking the way they should be anyways. Do You? One thing I do know buying pot in Colorado if your from out a state is a pain in the ass and that's how you pay to. The worst part is they don't sell you the good pot. I guess my point is you need money to buy pot in Colorado so who do you think is smoking it bankers, businessmen, realtors. Just thinking what does there brain look like, smoking pot and taking scripts. And the world goes on
