All shipping was ordered to remain in harbor and some flights were canceled in the northern Philippines, while schools were closed in the capital, Manila, on Monday due to flooding and landslides from a tropical storm, disaster officials said.

Storm warnings were issued in at least 14 areas of the main Philippine island of Luzon as tropical storm Linfa moved slowly across the north of the Southeast Asian archipelago. It was carrying maximum wind gusts of 100 km per hour (60 mph).

Alexander Pama, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said the storm would bring heavy rain within a 400-km (250 miles) radius. The storm was named Egay in the Philippines.

2 waterspouts form near La Union, Philippines

Image
Two waterspouts were caught by a resident in Aringay, La Union during inclement weather there, a report from GMA's "24 Oras" said Saturday.

According to the residents who took the video footage, they first saw one of the waterspouts at sea and was approaching their houses.

They then saw another, larger waterspout building up and seemingly sucking water from the sea nearby.

A waterspout destroyed four houses in a coastal village in Misamis Oriental early Monday morning.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that the waterspout that hit Purok 2, Barangay Tubigan, Initao town, also injured three people.

Sixteen other houses were damaged and 20 families were affected.

The injured were identified as 57-year-old Ricardo Bebangco, his wife Helen, 52, and their 13-year-old son Crilfel. They were treated at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital in Initao, said Fernando Vincent Dy Jr., PDRRMO officer-in-charge.

Pag-asa weather specialist Mario Guya said waterspouts are normally associated with weather disturbances such as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is bringing rain to Misamis Oriental.

The waterspout left P315,000 in property damage and P36,500 in crop damage, according to the PDRRMO.

"We sent food packs to the families and currently, our team is still looking for temporary shelters," Dy said.

Engineers are working to reconnect hundreds of households in north-east England hit by a power cut in a lightning storm during Wednesday's searingly hot temperatures.

The thunderstorm left 40,000 homes without electricity in parts of North Yorkshire, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. Northern Powergrid said power had been restored to 32,500 of its customers by 7pm and work was continuing to make sure the rest were connected by Thursday afternoon.

Spectacular lightning swept across northern England and Scotland after the hottest July day on record in many places. Scores of motorists pulled over to watch as the storm moved up the Pennines. In Sheffield, people drove out of the city to watch a huge cloud flash with almost continuous lightning but without thunder or rain.

In the village of Worrall, Rick Taylor said: "I've not seen anything like this before, it's amazing. It's exactly like that scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind when the spaceship is approaching."

Elsewhere, huge hailstones caused damage in parts of North Yorkshire and County Durham and the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation even issued a tornado warning for parts of the Midlands.

Another former Northwest Airlines Boeing 747 left an Arizona boneyard for Minneapolis, where it is likely being prepared to unretire and replace the ice-battered jumbo jet that took passengers on a wild ride.

A mothballed Delta Air Lines Boeing 747 is at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and likely under maintenance to replace another 747 that was damaged by hail while flying over China.

The damaged plane, a 26-year-old Boeing 747-400, was dubbed "The Spirit of Beijing" by Eagan-based Northwest Airlines Corp. before Delta bought the airline in 2008.

Registered as tail No. N664US, the plane was flying from Detroit to Seoul two weeks ago when it encountered a hailstorm. It's not clear whether the jet will return to service(Delta is phasing out its 747 fleet by 2017).

Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Leigh Spann says waterspouts develop during certain weather conditions in the Tampa Bay area. "They are more common when we get wind flow off the Gulf of Mexico," said Spann.

A News Channel 8 viewer also submitted a photo of the waterspout. Don Stansell sent a photo of the waterspout near Clearwater Beach that was taken around 10 a.m.

Waterspouts are called tornadoes once they make landfall.
