Over 70 mm of rain fell in the port city of Varna on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, flooding streets and causing severe traffic disruption.

As much as 71.5 mm of rain fell in 24 hours between 04 and early 05 June. According to WMO figures, the city would normally see 46 mm of rain during the whole of June.

Quoting the regional governor of Varna, Stoyan Pasev, local media said that the floods and stormy weather had damaged at least 40 houses in the areas fo Aksakovo, Kumanovo and Klimentovo. At least 1 family has been left homeless.

Torrential rains and enormous hailstones that created a winter wonderland at the start of summer by blanketing the mountains in white caused mixed feelings on Monday, as some gushed over the rarity of the phenomenon while others mourned their destroyed crops.

The hailstorm lasted for about an hour in the early afternoon and left almost no fruit on trees. The produce the storm destroyed included pears, cherries, nectarines and peaches.

"In around a month we would have begun cutting nectarines and peaches, then apples. Now, there's nothing left to cut," producer Vlamis Avgousti from Amiandos told state broadcaster CyBC.

He said that the intensity of the hailstorm and the size of the stones had damaged trees so badly that "we will have a problem also next year".

Community leader of Amiandos, Kriton Kyriakides, said this was the first time in his life he had experienced something like this in summer.

American Airlines flight 1897 was forced to make an emergency landing in El Paso, Texas, Sunday night after the Airbus A319 suffered severe damage during a hail storm over New Mexico.

The Phoenix-bound flight, which had departed at 6:57 p.m. local time from San Antonio, was forced to divert to El Paso roughly an hour after takeoff.

According to reports, none of the 130 passengers or the crew members aboard the flight suffered any injuries; however, a few lunches were lost to the severe turbulence, The Dallas News reported.

Photos shared on Twitter show the plane's nose dented inward and windshield severely cracked.

An American Airlines flight over Texas was forced to make an emergency landing after being heavily damaged, smashed and battered by a sever hail storm which shattered the nose cone, windshield and side windows of the plane. Huge hail stones in Italy and record snow in Newfoundland St Johns Canada on June 4th, buy the media quickly removed the videos, but I was able other images on Twitter.

A storm that hit Brittany, France, during the night from Sunday 03 June to Monday 04 June, 2018, has caused severe flooding in the department of Finistère. The departments of Côtes-d'Armor and Ille-et-Vilaine were also badly affected.

Local fire and emergency crews were called out to over 450 interventions during the storm, with over half of them in the town of Morlaix, Finistère, where some homes have been evacuated.

Photos and videos on Social Media showed flood water raging through the streets of Morlaix. Stéven Tual, meteorologist for Meteo Bretagne, said that around a month's worth of rain fell in less than an hour. Meteo Bretagne said Morlaix received 52 mm of rain and 70 mm in Monts d'Arrée.

A total of 70 people died amid heavy storms in Cambodia this year, including 65 who were struck by lightning, local media reported on Monday.

National Committee for Disaster Management spokesman Keo Vy told newsmen that the first five months of the year have seen 68 people killed during storms.

Vy said that the current number of deaths by lightning has already surpassed 2017's toll for the same period.

"Lightning deaths this year are worse than last year.

"So far, 65 people were killed by lightning this year, while 46 were injured and 69 cattle were killed," he said.

Motorcyclist killed by lightning strike near Thessaloniki, Greece

Authorities in Greece say a 58-year-old motorcyclist was killed when lightning struck him on a highway.

Police say the man was found dead 40 kilometers east of the northern city of Thessaloniki with a hole in his helmet, presumably the result of the lightning striking him.

The victim was driving toward the city in stormy conditions.

There were no details about burns on the body, but authorities say they are certain the motorcyclist's death was not the result of his 800-cc motorcycle falling after the lightning.

Thunderstorms and lightning killed three people and injured two others in Malayer in the west of Iran on Saturday, according to the spokesman for Iran's Emergency Management Organization.

Mojtaba Khaledi, spokesman for Iran's Emergency Management Organization, said thunderstorms and lightning have killed three people and injured two others in Malayer County, in the western province of Hamedan on Saturday afternoon.

Immediately after the lightning struck, an ambulance was dispatched to the scene to transfer the bodies of the injured and the killed to the hospital, he added.

He gave no further details about the severity of the condition of the two injured.

On Friday, Khaledi reported death of four people and injury of nine by lighting strikes across the country.

Comment: Also over the last few days a total of at least 12 people and 40 sheep were killed by lightning strikes across India, while 2 were fatally hit in the Philppines.

At least 17 persons have been reported dead in dust storm which hit western Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening.

Muradabad has the highest number of casualties (7) while Muzaffarnagar and Meerutreported two deaths each. Three persons died in Sambhal and two deaths were reported from Badaun. Relief commissioner Sanjay Kumarsaid that all these deaths have been reported due to tree or house collapse incidents.

A tin shed collapsed in Amroha killing one person. Kumar said that district magistrates have been asked to ensure that relief material are distributed within 24 hours and compensations are disbursed to affected families at the earliest.

Close to 150 persons have died in the state due to thunder storms since May 1 this year. While some deaths were reported due to lightning strikes, most deaths have occurred due to wall or tree collapse incidents.

Comment: A month ago powerful 'freak' dust storms killed over 125 people in north India, the highest death toll in decades.

While dust storms and thunderstorms are common in the country at this time, recent storms appear to be particularly intense. NASA's Earth Observatory reported that the state of Andhra Pradesh in the country's southeast was struck by about 40 000 lightning bolts in just 13 hours late April 2018. That's more than the number of strikes that occurred in the entire month of May 2017.

From the same article Ajay Singh, a climate change researcher commented:
"Even with the increasing trend, the intensity of events so far this year is anomalous. The unusual thunder and dust storms could have a combination of causes, including extra moisture from a cyclonic circulation over West Bengal colliding with destructive dusty winds. High temperatures in the area also made the atmosphere unstable, fueling thunderstorms and heavy winds."

There was widespread flooding across many parts of Northern Ireland on Friday night.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Friday and most of Saturday telling the public to brace for extreme weather with thunderstorms and flooding expected.

The north west appeared to bear the brunt of the worst. Roads in Ballykelly and Greysteel and Limavady were near impassable while there are incidents of flooding in Magherafelt which the Fire Service attended.

The Meadowlane Shopping Centre in Magherafelt was flooded.

There was also flash flooding on the Falls Road and difficult driving conditions reported in Lisburn.
