Cyclone Trevor barrels into Australia's northeastern coast with 200kmh winds while second tropical storm begins to form

Tropical Cyclone Trevor is set to make a second landfall over northeastern Australia this weekend, after hitting the sparsely populated Cape York Peninsula in Queensland on Tuesday.

However, a separate tropical depression is also now forming off the Kimberly coast in the north-west of the country.

This tropical low is expected to track towards the southwest over the coming days, steadily intensifying and reaching tropical cyclone strength on Thursday.

There is uncertainty in the forecast track but there is potential for a severe tropical cyclone impact for the Pilbara coast over the weekend.

Cyclone Trevor's very destructive core has already made landfall to the south of Lockhart River in Queensland with 220km gusts.

Winds up to 125km/h are set to hit the coast between Cape Grenville and the small Queensland town of Coen.

Schoolchildren were among those killed by landslides and flooding in Zimbabwe as the death toll from tropical cyclone Idai rose to at least 157.

The pair of boarders were asleep when a rock fall hit the dining hall and dormitory at St Charles Lwanga school in the eastern province of Manicaland, according to officials in the southern African country.

Cyclone Idai has affected more than 1.5 million people across southern Africa since it hit land in Mozambique last week.

At least 126 people have died in Mozambique and Malawi and another 31 have died in Zimbabwe. Hundreds more are missing or have been left homeless by the disaster.

Both Zimbabwe's president Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mozambique's leader Filipe Nyusi cut short their trips to the United Arab Emirates and Eswatini respectively after being criticised for failing to deal with the crisis.

Weather extremes: Heavy hailstorms cause considerable damage to orchards in South Africa

On 12 March, heavy hailstorms caused considerable damage to soft fruit in Langkloof.

The extent of the hail damage is still being determined, but, according to Bokkie Kritzinger, some orchards have suffered a 100% loss. Kritizinger is the chairperson of the South African Langkloof agricultural association. Langkloof is situated in the Eastern Cape.

"What we have learned from this, is that we will never again establish new orchards without netting," he says. "In those places where we did have nets set up, the hail did not penetrate. So, 100% damage was prevented on the trees that did have fruit on them. Most of our nets were, however, spanned over young trees."

"This was also a good test to see how well the draping nets would hold up. The first evaluation shows that the fruit right against the nets was damaged. However, those deeper in the trees were well-protected," explains Kritzinger.

At least 31 people have died in eastern Zimbabwe while dozens were missing as homes and bridges were swept away by a tropical storm, state television reported on Saturday.

Cyclone Idai, which brought floodwater and destruction to areas of Mozambique and Malawi, hit Zimbabwe on Friday, cutting off power and communications.

Pictures shared on Twitter and television footage showed roads, houses and bridges that were washed away while communication towers were knocked down and electricity cables blocked roads in Chimanimani district, 410 kilometres (255 miles) east of the capital Harare.

State television ZBC said 31 people had died in the district while more than 70 people were missing.

The information ministry said the army had moved in to rescue 197 pupils trapped at a local school.

"This a very challenging operation as it's being undertaken as a ground effort because of unsafe weather conditions for air efforts," the ministry said in a statement.

Farmers are going to extreme measures just to eek out a crop, as a cold, wet winter kills crops and rots fodder. History is repeating as we enter the sun's Grand Minimum cycle. Also, massive Solar Storms -- the likes of which would decimate our society -- have happened before, and will happen again.

Four people were killed on Thursday evening in a lightning strike at Lupungutu village in West Singhbhum district, police said. The victims were all working in a brick kiln when the lightning strike accompanied by strong winds and rains struck them.

The villagers succumbed to injuries while they were being taken to the Sadar Hospital, Chaibasa, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Sadar) Amar Kumar Pandey. The victims were identified as Paltan Champia, Gura Pingua, Japut Champia and Krishna Munduya, who was a resident of Hathnabeda.

The bodies were taken for postmortem, the officer added.

With heavy rain and winds of up to 170 kilometers per hour (105 mph), Tropical Cyclone Idai unleashed widespread damage and destruction Friday on the port city of Beira, leaving more than a dozen dead and cutting off communications and electricity.

After making landfall late Thursday, Idai felled pylons, destroyed houses and blew the roofs off seven schools. The airport was shut down after suffering damage to its control tower and runways. Flooding also swamped Beira's roads, and the hospital suspended surgeries due to the storm.

"There has been a lot of damage. Many homes have been left without roofs," said Alberto Mondlane, the provincial governor.

The power and communication outages left Beira's roughly 530,000 residents cut off.

Power outages also affected the provinces of Manica and parts of Inhambane.

A monster winter storm that slammed the Rockies into the Central Plains contributed to the death of a Colorado State Patrol corporal on Wednesday, officials report.

The 'bomb cyclone' packed blizzard conditions, tropical storm-force winds, and hazardous travel.

The storm turned deadly when a Colorado State Patrol corporal was struck and killed by a vehicle while he was outside helping a car that slid off of Interstate 76 in Weld County, Colo.

A Volvo lost control and ran into Corporal Daniel Groves, 52. Corporal Groves was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The National Weather Service deemed the storm a "cyclone of historic proportions."

As the blizzard developed, heavy snow lashed northern Colorado, including Denver, western Nebraska, eastern Wyoming, central South Dakota, and southeastern North Dakota.
