Japan hit by unseasonal high temperatures after Typhoon Trami leaves four dead, hundreds injured & travel chaos

Typhoon Trami: The storm has blasted across Japan

Tokyo woke up to unseasonal heat and bright cloudless skies on Monday (Oct 1), hours after the ferocious Typhoon Trami caused widespread power outages, cancelled flights and shut down train services as it churned towards the Pacific Ocean.

Commuters in central Tokyo experienced massive transport snarls during the morning rush hour - with many unable to get to work on time - as rail operators delayed the start of train services to clear fallen trees and other debris.

One of the services was the Keio Line, after a train hit a collapsed wall in Setagaya ward at about 4.45am, halting services for over four hours. No one was injured.

Across the country, the season's 24th typhoon left at least four people dead, one missing and more than 200 injured, according to a tally by public broadcaster NHK as at 9pm (8pm in Singapore).

The storm first slammed into the south-western Okinawa chain of islands on Saturday, before moving north-east and making landfall in Wakayama, south of Osaka, on Sunday. It then traversed north-east across the main island of Honshu.

At its peak, the typhoon packed gusts of 216kmh, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Though it gradually lost strength after making landfall, the western Tokyo suburb of Hachioji still recorded winds of up to 164kmh.

A powerful typhoon headed towards Japan's main island on Sunday forcing the cancellation or suspension of airline and train services and causing power outages and evacuations from areas still recovering from a typhoon last month.

Kansai International Airport in Osaka, western Japan, which was heavily flooded by a typhoon last month, said it had closed its runways from 11 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Sunday until 6 a.m. on Monday. The airport only fully reopened on Sept. 21.

Airlines canceled or plan to cancel more than 930 flights, public broadcaster NHK said. And most of local trains and bullet trains in western areas will suspend operations on Sunday, operator West Japan Railway said.

Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan and more than 300,000 households have suffered power outages in southern Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures, said NHK, adding nearly 50 people had been injured in Okinawa and Kagoshima.

A storm ravaging the northwestern district of Mexico sparked an impressive tornado in the city of San Pedro.

Footage shared online from the National Weather Commission (Conagua) shows the tornado forming close to a trafficked street of the Sinaloa town.

Onlookers can be seen curiously watching the funnel of swirling air sucking up more warm air from the ground to strengthen its walls.

Local authorities said the tornado began to form at around 7pm on Thursday before disappearing into thin air less than five minutes latest without causing any damage.

'Medicane', a rare, hurricane-like storm, rolls across southern Europe

Medicane
Rare cyclone called 'Medicane' which is currently careering across the Mediterranean and set to batter Greece and Turkey this weekend
Emergency services in Italy and Greece were on high alert on Friday bracing for a powerful cyclone that was expected to bring gale-force winds and torrential rain to the eastern Mediterranean this weekend.

Greece was already feeling the impact of thunderstorms and high winds ahead of a small but intense cyclone known as a "Medicane" which is rarely seen in the Mediterranean.

Meteorologists said the weather system was expected to strike the southern coasts of Sicily and Calabria before moving eastward across the Aegean and Ionian Seas to Greece where it could bring winds of up to 160 kmh (100 mph) and waves as high as 12 metres (39 feet).

Schools in Athens and several other parts of the country were closed Friday, as heavy storms swept across the mainland and islands on Thursday.

Some ferry services from ports near the Greek capital resumed after being mostly halted for the previous two days, while the poor weather conditions also caused flight delays.

Young man dies of hypothermia after early blizzard in Romania's mountains

A 22-year old hiker died at the hospital in Sibiu after a blizzard caught him on a ridge at over 2000 meters in the Fagaras mountains.

The mountain rescuers brought him and the girl who was with him down from the mountain, but the doctors couldn't save him, local Digi24 reported. He suffered from extreme hypothermia and was in critical condition. The girl who was with him was also admitted in the hospital with hypothermia and frostbites.

The mountain rescuers said the hikers had mountain equipment suitable for this period of the year but that the weather conditions were extreme and only winter equipment could have saved the young climber.

The weather in Romania got very cold at the beginning of this week and it even snowed at over 2000 meters. The famous high-altitude roads Transalpina and Transfagarasan were covered in snow and the mountain rescuers were called to help some tourists who were blocked by snow on Transalpina and had to sleep in their cars.

Adapt 2030 Ice Age Report: Snow records in France fall from data tampering

Somehow over 140 cm or 4.2 feet of snow disappeared from the climate records in Chamonix, France as it was too inconvenient for snow to more than double since 2011 in the area with Global Warming predictions that there would be less snow and that Atlantic water temperatures modulate Europe's temperatures. Atlantic cold, Grand Solar Minimum colder, more snow is what the climate data erasure is trying to hide.

Liua is South Pacific's first cyclone in September for 70 years

Tropical Cyclone Liua
Himawari-8 visible true colour image of Tropical Cyclone Liua on Thursday morning, local time.
Cyclone Liua is the first cyclone to form in the south-west Pacific in the month of September for nearly 70 years.

Liua is over the Solomons' Makira Island and is forecast to develop into a category two on the scale of one to five.

Its winds are weak, but forecasters are concerned about its slow pace and heavy rains.

The official cyclone season runs from 1 November to the end of April.

Chris Brandolino of the New Zealand climate and weather office, NIWA, said Liua comes even before forecasters have put together their cyclone outlook for the region.

"It is very unusual, in fact this is the first tropical cyclone to form in the month of September going back to 1950. It is certainly unusual."

A dark base of cumulus clouds over the Gulf of Mexico gave way to a waterspout this morning near the Galveston Seawall, providing a somewhat rare sight for nearby drivers and pedestrians.

The spout did not appear to be associated with any storm systems, but forecasters predict a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the area later this afternoon.

Cristen Selby filmed the video around 7:30 a.m. near 69th Street and the Seawall.
