Man killed by lightning strike in Romania - 2nd such death for the country in a week

A 47-year old man died after being struck by lightning at the Sarmizegetusa Regia Dacian site in Romania, and two others were injured, being transported to the hospital, local News.ro reported.

The man who was killed by the lightning strike was working as a security guard at the Dacian fortress located in Hunedoara county. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, August 8.

"A man was killed while two other people, husband and wife, who were visiting the archaeological site, suffered trauma due to the electrical discharges produced in the area," representatives of the Hunedoara Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said.

Lightning isn't only a danger to humans in Colorado. It also poses a threat to wildlife.

A bear was killed in a tree after a lightning strike in Teller County Monday night. The bear was sitting in the tree and died instantly, according to Colorado Department of Wildlife officers.

The office estimates the bear weighed around 300 pounds.

The death toll from Typhoon Lekima in eastern China rose to 44 people on Monday morning.

Heavy rain swept through the region after the powerful typhoon made landfall in the coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday.

It left a trail of destruction after a landslide backed up a river that broke through debris and inundated homes


Comment: CCTV reports that the death toll has risen to 49, with another 21 people reported missing.

Several lightning strikes were detected near the North Pole on Saturday, something rarely seen in that region of the Arctic Ocean.

The lightning flashes were recorded within 300 miles of the North Pole, at 85 degrees north latitude, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. AKDT, according to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, Alaska. That's about 700 miles north of the Lena River Delta in Siberia.

This was a rare event and one of the most northerly lightning strikes in the memories of Alaskan forecasters, the NWS said.

Lightning does occur each summer north of the Arctic Circle (66.6 degrees north latitude), including occasionally over southern portions of the Arctic Ocean.


It's uncertain how many lightning strikes in history have occurred as far north as Saturday's event, but based on the worldwide lightning climatology map shown below, they are hardly seen in that region of the Arctic.

Comment: A couple of weeks ago record lightning strikes were reported in Iceland. In March this year an anomalous lightning storm hit Southern California producing more than 1,200 bursts in five minutes. In December 2018 the sky over New York City lit up with mysterious blue light.

Florida woman dies following lightning strike

A 20-year-old Florida woman has died two weeks after being struck by lightning while working with a roofing crew, authorities said.

Romelia Ramirez succumbed late Friday to injuries she suffered from the lightning strike on a rooftop in Wellington, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

She had been in critical condition since July 30, when she took a direct hit from the lightning strike, which knocked her to the ground from the two-story home, officials said.

Another worker who was knocked off a ladder during the incident hit his head but is expected to survive. Four other workers were treated at the scene or local hospitals and released.

Lightning kills 32, injures dozens as monsoon batters India At least 32 people have died in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and many more were injured across the country after being struck by lightning, the deadliest weather event in India, which claims over 2,500 lives every year.

Lightning claimed the lives of at least 32 people across 10 cities and districts in Uttar Pradesh in northern India, the authorities reported Sunday. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and ordered the district administrations to provide compensation to the relatives.

The same day, at least 26 rural workers in the state of Rajasthan, also in northern India, were injured in a lightning strike that hit the state's Pali district. The injured laborers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. 18 people were later released while eight female workers remain in hospital care.

Eighteen people have been killed and 14 were missing in eastern China in a landslide triggered by a large typhoon, which caused widespread transport disruptions and the evacuation of more than a million people, state broadcaster CCTV has reported.

Typhoon Lekima made landfall early on Saturday in the eastern province of Zhejiang with maximum winds of 116 mph (187 km/h), although it had weakened from its earlier designation as a super typhoon, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Thousands of flights were cancelled in eastern China, according to the country's aviation regulator, with most flights into and out of Shanghai's two main airports cancelled on Saturday afternoon, their websites showed.

China's weather bureau on Saturday issued an orange alert - its second highest - after posting a red alert on Friday, when the storm forced flight cancellations in Taiwan and shut markets and businesses on the island.

The deaths occurred in Yongjia county on the outskirts of Wenzhou, a major port city. The river blocked by a landslide rose to a level of 10m (30ft) within 10 minutes, trapping 120 villagers, Xinhua said.

Thousands of flights were cancelled in eastern China, according to the country's aviation regulator, with most flights into and out of Shanghai's two main airports called off on Saturday afternoon, their websites showed.

China's weather bureau on Saturday issued an orange alert - its second highest - after posting a red alert on Friday, when the storm forced flight cancellations in Taiwan and shut markets and businesses on the island.

The deadly landslide occurred about 80 miles (129km) north of the coastal city of Wenzhou, when a natural dam collapsed in an area deluged with 160mm (6.3 in) of rain within three hours, CCTV reported.


The storm was moving northward at 9mph (15km/h) and was gradually weakening, Xinhua reported, citing the weather bureau. High winds and heavy rains battered the financial hub of Shanghai on Saturday afternoon, and Shanghai Disneyland was shut for the day.

Nearly 200 hundred trains through the city of Jinan in Shandong province had been suspended until Monday, Xinhua reported.

More than 250,000 residents in Shanghai and 800,000 in Zhejiang province had been evacuated due to the typhoon, and 2.72m households in Zhejiang had power blackouts as strong wind and rain downed electricity transmission lines, state media reported.

About 200 houses in six cities in Zhejiang had collapsed, and 66,300ha (163,830 acres) of farmland had been destroyed, CCTV said.

The storm was predicted to reach Jiangsu province by early Sunday and veer over the Yellow Sea before continuing north and making landfall again in Shandong province, CCTV said.

Coastal businesses in Zhejiang were shut and the emergency management ministy warned of potential risk of fire, explosions and toxic gas leaks at chemical parks and oil refineries.

Lekima, downgraded to a tropical storm, was heading slowly north along China's east coast on Sunday morning.

An enormous waterspout was spotted spinning through Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, on Friday evening (local time).

Footage captured the powerful waterspout barrelling over the Oosterdok waterway. Multiple eyewitness videos show the waterspout moving at great speed, sending debris flying into the air and bending trees with its fury.

"What the actual f**k. Amsterdam central, Oosterdok just now," one person tweeted.

On August 8, Karnataka received nearly five times the rainfall it normally does, adding to the severity of the ongoing floods in at least 12 districts that have killed 20 people by August 9, 2019.

The rain has come at a time it normally does not. In some districts it has been multiple times more than the normal for this time of the year:

Mysuru in south Karnataka received 62.2 mm absolute rainfall in a day — 3176 per cent, or 32 times, the long-term average for that day. Dharwad in the north received 85.9 mm — 2222 per cent, or 22 times, above normal.
