Tropical disturbance hits west Caribbean, causing floods in Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba

A tropical disturbance moved across the western Caribbean on Friday, knocking out power to thousands in Jamaica and causing two deaths in Haiti as it unleashed landslides and floods before dissipating, authorities said.

Some 14,000 customers lost power in Jamaica after heavy rains downed trees, severed power lines and caused landslides, according to Jamaica Public Service Co. At least 24 people were rescued from floodwaters in the island's southeastern region, the Jamaican Defense Force said.

Heavy rains also hit Haiti, where the Civil Protection Agency told The Associated Press late Friday that two people had died after being swept away by floods in the country's western Grand'Anse region.

Roads in Dubai, United Arab Emirates flooded after heavy rainfall, thunderstorm

The roads of Dubai were waterlogged and flooded after heavy rainfall and thunderstorm hit parts of the United Arab Emirates this morning. Due to extreme weather conditions, people there have been advised to avoid beaches and stay indoors. Traffic and flight operations were also affected in the emirates due the weather.

The Dubai Police sent out an alert at 6.30 in the morning urging people to stay clear of beaches and areas prone to flash floods and exercise caution while driving. The UAE's National Center of Meteorology issued a yellow and orange alert amid the thunderstorm and rain.

People across Dubai shared visuals of the heavy rainfall on social media. In one of the videos shared on X, formerly Twitter, a man is seen rowing a small boat on a flooded road.

Waterspouts are common in tropical and subtropical waters, however, this is the first time spectators at Sun Moon Lake have witnessed this phenomenon.

A rare scene of a water tornado appeared in Nantou's Sun Moon Lake on Thursday evening. The slim-looking tornado, known as a waterspout, extended from the lake all the way to the sky. Even though it was not very powerful, its shape was very clear.

The waterspout was spotted by a boatman who was looking towards the mountains. He was quick enough to document the phenomenon on his phone. He says that he has been working here for 10 years and has never seen anything similar.

Flood-like situation due to heavy rain in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

In the United Arab Emirates, several days of heavy rain have resulted in flooding in some areas and safety advisories for drivers. Because of the recent rains, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is experiencing significant street flooding.

Authorities issued a warning that erratic weather is expected to strike the nation through Thursday. Social media posts featured videos of cars traversing waterlogged roadways.

Brigadier Ahmed al-Naqbi, the director of the Ras Al-Khaimah Police's Traffic and Patrols Department, pleaded with all drivers on Saturday to drive defensively and to follow all traffic laws and safety regulations.

Videos that the X users uploaded showed rivers quickly developing on formerly dry areas and highways completely submerged in water.

The worsening flood situation in Kenya has forced as many as 58,000 people from their homes, according to the latest reports from humanitarian organisations.

In a recent interview with local television, the Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society, Dr Ahmed Idris, said that at least 19 of the country's 47 counties have now been affected by flooding which began in late October 2023. As many as 46 people have now lost their lives as a result of the heavy rains and flooding, Dr Ahmed Idris said.

Currently the worst affected areas are in the north of the country, in particular in Samburu, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Mandera counties. However the recent overflow of the Tana River has affected areas in the east of the country including Tana River and Garissa counties. Dr Ahmed Idris said forecasts for the coming weeks show an possible increased flooding risk for western areas of the country.

A mum-of-two was tragically killed by a lightning bolt while enjoying a family holiday in Cartagena, Colombia.

Froilanis Maireth Rivas Roman, 34, was caught in a thunderstorm on the beach and was struck by lightning as she walked in the Caribbean surf. CCTV footage shows the horrifying moment when Froilanis was hit by a massive electric flash and instantly fell to the ground.

Another beach-goer nearby also felt the shock but seemed to escape the full force of the strike. Shocking phone footage taken by stunned beachgoers shows hairdresser Froilanis lying flat on her back as the sea surrounds her.

Severe hailstorm leaves a trail of destruction in Johannesburg, South Africa

Residents are left to pick up the pieces as an unforeseen hailstorm ravaged through some parts of Johannesburg last night.

The hailstorm followed after a thunderstorm hit the city late afternoon. Hailstones the size of a golf-ball came down from the dark skies. Numerous cars and buildings were damaged as a result of mother nature's wrath.

Joburg Emergency Services say they remain on high alert as storms are expected Today. Robert Mulaudzi from Joburg EMS says mostly affected areas in the city are Braamfontein, Midrand, Sandton, Paulshof and the metro at large.

"From our side as the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, we remain on high alert throughout the day monitoring all seven regions of the city so that we can be able to respond to all emergencies which are reported through our emergency call centre," Mulaudzi explained.

Salthill has been majorly flooded as seawater combined, with heavy rain, overwhelmed the town in the early hours of the morning.

Photos posted on social media show cars submerged up to their headlights parked near the seafront in the town.

The images were shared by Carlow Weather, who posted this morning that "Official stations show top gusts from Storm Debi was 113kmh at Knock Airport."

A winter storm dropped record snowfall amounts in Anchorage, Alaska, with some areas outside of Anchorage proper receiving more than 2 feet of snowfall in just two days.

The largest city in Alaska broke its daily snowfall record on Wednesday when 9 inches of snow fell in 24 hours. For context, the previous record for Nov. 8 was 7.3 inches set in 1982. Another 8.2 inches piled up on Thursday, which also broke the daily record of 7.1 inches set on Nov. 9, 1956. That brought Anchorage's two-day total to 17.2 inches of snow.

By late Thursday, Anchorage had a 21-inch snow depth, or the total amount of snow on the ground. This was Anchorage's greatest snow depth for so early in the season, according to Alaska-based climatologist Brian Brettschneider. Already, 26.6 inches of snow has fallen in Anchorage this season, which is 17.5 inches above the average snowfall to date for Nov. 9.

Lightning strike kills 20 livestock in Jammu and Kashmir, India

At least 20 animals including goats and sheep perished after lightning struck a cattle shed in Narla village of Rajouri district.

Officials said that the lightning hit the cattle shed of Mohammad Aslam son of Mohammad Miyaan resident of Mazra in Narla village.

In the incident, they said, 20 domesticated animals that include goats and sheep perished causing massive damage to the family.

People from the area have appealed to the Government to provide financial aid to the affected family.
