The death toll from flash floods that hit Indonesia's South Sulawesi province has risen to 36, while 40 are still reported missing, officials say.

Wisnu Widjaja of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in an online press conference that the number of those wounded was 58 while 14,483 people have been displaced and are staying in 76 shelters in Sabbang, Masamba and Baebunta sub-districts.

Three rivers in the area overflowed following intense rainfall that lasted two days, triggering a flash flood that struck the North Luwu area last Monday evening.

"The flash floods were caused by land conversion. A joint team has been deployed to clear the roads that are blocked by the mud using excavators," BNPB spokesman Raditya Djati said in the press conference.

He said the mud-clearing process is expected to finish by Monday.

A once-in-500-year storm has slammed Northland, flooding shops and forcing residents to evacuate homes.

Fire crews rushed out to 212 emergency callouts as the storm dumped 220mm on Whangārei.

The heavy falls caused slips and landslides that closed roads and limited water supplies.

Whangārei residents were this morning being asked to conserve water after the city's water treatment plants were "struggling to cope with the intense rainfall", Whangārei District Council said.

Residents in Onerahi and Whangārei Heads were advised not to drink or use tap water except in emergencies after a burst water main on Riverside Dr drained local supplies.

Comment: Earlier this year the army was deployed to Northland as it experienced its 'worst drought on record'.

Surprise summer flash flood inundates Palermo, Italy

floods
Firefighters in the Italian city of Palermo have worked through the night searching for people thought to have been trapped in a car in a flooded underpass after the most "violent" rainstorm in memory, according to local officials.

The rain, which reportedly fell intensely for several hours, caused widespread flooding in Palermo on Wednesday and resulted in the hospitalisation of two small children for hypothermia, Italian news agency ANSA said.

As the underpass search continued, police said they had received no report of people missing.

Leoluca Orlando, mayor of Palermo on the island of Sicily, described the downpour as "the most violent rain in the history of the city since at least 1790, equal to that which falls in a year".

Comment: Another report by EuroWeekly states that 2 people died trapped inside a car.
