Another giant squid caught in fishing net in Japan

Image
Giant squid
A giant squid measuring nearly 11 feet long is caught alive in a fishing net in western Japan

According to the Tottori prefecture fishing cooperative, the squid was caught on Monday evening off the prefecture's coast, when fishermen were trawling for flatfish and crabs.

The squid measured 11 feet long, and was found missing both its longest tentacles.

Though it was caught alive, the squid died before reaching shore on Tuesday.

Local residents said they immediately wondered how many people the 220 pound squid could feed if cut into sashimi.

Unfortunately the ammonium content of the squid is said to make it rather unpleasant to eat.

Mystery pet rotting disease kills sixteen dogs as it spreads across Britain

Image
© GettyFatal: Pet owners suspecting the illness should visit their vet straight away
The unknown illness is similar to the US Alabama rot in the 1980s and causes nasty skin legions which often leads to kidney failure in the animals

A killer dog disease, which has already claimed 16 lives, is spreading across Britain.

Posters have been put up across New Forest, Hampshire, after nine cases in the area - with another seven affected in other parts of the country including Cornwall, Surrey, Worcestershire and County Durham.

The canines suffer fatal symptoms including lesions on the lower legs followed by kidney failure between two and seven days later.

Vet David Walker said the deaths have similarities to a disease called Alabama rot which was first reported in the United States in the 1980s and also causes nasty skin legions.

He said the cause of this was toxins from the E. coli bacteria but this had not yet been traced in the UK.

There is no specific medical treatment for Alabama rot but pet owners are encouraged to seek help as soon as they see any of the symptoms for this new mystery disease, to try and stop it developing.

25% of sharks and rays at high risk of extinction

A new assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has revealed that a quarter of the world's sharks and rays are at risk of extinction.
A new assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has revealed that a quarter of the world's sharks and rays are at risk of extinction.

The latest update to the IUCN's "Red List" of threatened species, which found ray species to be at higher risk than sharks, is part of a first-ever global analysis of these marine species.

Researchers assessed the conservation status of 1,041 shark, ray and chimaera species, which are all so-called "cartilaginous fish," meaning they have skeletons made of cartilage rather than bone. A chimaera is type of jawed fish closely related to sharks and rays.

The researchers found that sharks, rays and chimaeras face a substantially higher risk of extinction than do most other animals.

In fact, only 23 percent of shark, ray and chimaera species are categorized as being safe, or of "least concern," IUCN officials said.

Nick Dulvy, co-chair of the IUCN Shark Specialist Group and Canada Research Chair at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, said in a statement that the analysis shows that sharks and their relatives are facing an alarmingly elevated risk of extinction, LiveScience reported.

He said that in greatest peril are the largest species of rays and sharks, especially those living in shallow water that is accessible to fisheries, where they can become entangled in fishing gear a phenomenon known as bycatch.

4 Pilot whales dead and dozens of others emaciated, Florida coast

Image
© AP Photo/The News-Press, Andrew WestA pilot whale is stranded in the News Pass area on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, in Lee County, Fla. Two pilot whales died and a third would be euthanized after roughly four dozen whales swam into shallow waters off southwest Florida on Monday, wildlife officials said.

About four dozen pilot whales in shallow waters off of southwest Florida are being monitored by wildlife officials.

Two of the whales died and a third will be euthanized, officials said.

A handful of the whales stranded near shore in Lee County, while more than a dozen others swam nearby, said Kim Amendola of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service.

An additional 12 whales were spotted farther offshore earlier in the morning.

Necropsies would be performed on the three beached whales, said NOAA regional stranding coordinator Blair Mase.

The remaining whales were listless and emaciated, and many wouldn't react if a boat approached them, Mase said.

Snake slithers into Dunbartonshire lawyer's office in Scotland

The Scottish SPCA today launched an appeal to trace the owner of a small corn snake which slithered its way into a lawyer's office in Dunbartonshire.

Scotland's animal welfare charity was called in to rescue the snake after it was spotted inside the offices of Clyde Defence Lawyers in Alexander Street, Clydebank, on Thursday morning.

Now named Tango, the orange and yellow snake is being cared for at the charity's Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald.

Animal Rescue Officer Emma Campbell explained: "The person who first spotted Tango didn't think he was real as he wasn't moving. She thought someone in the office was playing a prank on her but after a colleague gave him a gentle prod it was clear he wasn't a toy and that they needed to contact us for help.

"Tango is a placid wee guy and he isn't very big as he's still a juvenile."

She continued: "There are flats on Alexander Street so it's possible Tango has escaped from his home nearby. We'd love to reunite Tango with his owner if he has gone missing but if no-one comes forward we'll find him a new home."

Anyone who recognises Tango is being asked to call the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre on 03000 999 999.

Mass fish die-off underway in the Nile's Rosetta branch

Image

Increasing numbers of dead fish are floating to the surface of the water in the Nile's Rosetta branch near the coastal city of Desouk, which indicates a potentially serious environmental disaster could be underway.

Fishermen reported a foul stench, thinking at first it was coming from the sewage or the industrial waste of the factories.

The governor has formed a committee to take samples of the fish and send them to the central laboratories of Kafr al-Sheikh to analyze and determine the causes.

The residents of the city complain that it has been three days and the numbers of dead fish are still growing, changing the color of the water.

Hani al-Mahlawy of the Preventive Security Administration claims the fish are dying due to the winter blockage of the Nile water that takes place around this time every year, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the water.

Family finds snake hiding in baby pram while on holiday in Port Douglas, Australia

Image

A young family holidaying in Port Douglas had the shock of a lifetime when they discovered a night snake sleeping beneath their two-year-old daughter's feet in her stroller.

Lauren Bailey, from NSW, was enjoying a walk with her children Max, 4, and Isla, 2.

They were staying in an apartment and the stroller had been parked in the stairwell overnight when the snake apparently decided to curl up for a rest.

Ms Bailey said the family had been out walking on Macrossan St for about half an hour and checking out the local stores when they stopped for ice cream.

"The snake was hidden underneath a clear rain cover for the stroller, and my daughter had her feet on top of that," she said.

"I had also taken the pump out of the bottom of the stroller, so I had my hand right next to it and sat down next to it to pump up the tyres.

"We stopped to buy an ice cream, I took the kids out of the stroller and the sky started to sprinkle so I took out the rain cover and saw the snake sitting right there.

500 flying foxes found dead from heat stress in Yarra Bend Park, Kew, Australia

Image
© Valeriu CampanMichele Phillips says that her Oakleigh South Animal Shelter has been inundated with heat stressed wildlife, including this possum, and urgently needs donations of food and hydrating fluid.
Up to 500 flying foxes died at Yarra Bend Park yesterday after the extreme heat decimated the colony.

Animal rescuers are tending the animals on both the Boroondara and Darebin sides of the river, with rescuers describing the sight as "horrific".

The South Oakleigh Wildlife Shelter's Michele Phillips said the extreme heat had caused the creatures to literally "drop out of the trees".

"It's a nightmare. We lost so many yesterday," Ms Phillips said.

Rescuers are rallying at the Kew park with water spray and rehydrating fluid, trying to save thousands of remaining flying foxes.

"When they drop to the ground we are trying to rehydrate them, and we are spraying the ones still in the trees," Ms Phillips said.

Victorian Advocate of Animals spokesman Lawrence Pope said rescuers were finding many dead animals, and others barely alive.
