Hunter viciously mauled by his own dog in Austria

A hunter in the Burgenland village of Mariadorf was seriously hurt on Monday after being bitten by his own dog.

The 61-year-old was tracking a deer, which had been injured in a traffic accident.

When his dog found a dead rabbit instead, it became aggressive and attacked the man.

The hunter was able to tie the animal to a traffic sign and alert the police.

When the officers arrived, the badly wounded hunter asked the police to kill his dog in order to prevent further danger.

The animal was killed with two shots and the hunter taken to hospital with serious injuries to his hands, legs and abdomen.

Onlookers have flocked to a beach at Titahi Bay, north of Wellington, to see a dead 6m-long whale which washed up overnight.

The whale, believed to be a cuvier's beaked whale, was first spotted about 8am today.

Department of Conservation's (DOC) marine species team manager Ian Angus said the whale was a deep-water species and appeared to be mature.

He said although cuvier's beaked whales had stranded on New Zealand shores before, it was not common.

"I can't see any obvious damage to it or injury, so I presume it died at sea and a combination of wave and wind has brought to Titahi Bay," he said.

DOC has put up a cordon around the whale to discourage people from touching it; one person nearly stood on it, a DOC staff member said.

Meanwhile, throughout the day rumours about killing by leopard kept forest officials on their toes.
A day after a pregnant woman was mauled by a man-eater leopard at Chhoti Jwari village in Alirajpur district, wildlife rescue team and battery of forest officials have launched a massive hunt to trace the beast.

DFO Alirajpur RS Sikarwar said, "Nearly six teams have been sent to different directions to trap the leopard. The rescue operation is being carried out with two tranquilizer guns and other equipment to catch the beast. Local villagers are also helping us but so far we are unable to trace it. Search operation is expected to intensify from Friday morning."

Meanwhile, throughout the day rumours about killing by leopard kept forest officials on their toes.

"Today no one was killed by leopard and people are spreading rumours," said Sikarwar.

Comment: A total of 10 leopard attacks on humans ( though not all involving fatalities) have now been recently reported from India, all within a relatively short time span (29th July - 14th September).

A Brooklyn mother says she and her 3-year-old son are still traumatized after she found the boy covered in bite marks and blood in his bed from what she believes was a rat attack.

"There was blood all over his pillow," said Marilyn Abreu, who lives in a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment with her son.

The boy had open wounds across his face, neck and feet. Abreu believes he was bitten by a rat or several rats while he slept on Aug. 21.

"It wasn't no scratches, it was the actual teeth," she said.

Two dead humpback whales have washed up on NSW beaches in recent days, prompting a reminder for swimmers to avoid getting too close to the giant "shark magnets".

One of the giant mammals reportedly washed up at Wallabi Point on the mid north coast on Monday morning, just a couple of kilometres north of Saltwater Beach where a second humpback carcass was found a day earlier.

"The one at Saltwater Beach was probably a juvenile while the other at Wallabi Point was much larger," said Dave Armstrong, who filmed the dead whales.

Kodiak fisheries biologist James Jackson had to miss a day of work and he's got a new scar on his leg, but he considers himself lucky after a close call with a Kodiak brown bear along a salmon stream.

"It was an experience to have, that's for sure," Jackson said. "It could have been a lot, lot worse."

A bear last week chomped down on his leg as he and partner Kurt Peterson conducted a salmon survey on Shuyak Island, the Kodiak Daily Mirror reported.

About 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4, Jackson and Peterson were on Hidden Cove Creek near the Big Bay ranger station. As they waded upstream, they tried to warn off bears by making plenty of noise.

In the heavily forested area, it didn't work.

A female leopard who was in search of a missing cub attacked five persons, following which it was beaten to death in upper Assam's Jorhat district.

The leopard attacked five men from behind when they were returning after rehearsing a play at Kachogoral under Jorhat police station, Jorhat Divisional Forest Officer Sarat Saikia said.

Angered by the attack, local people beat the female leopard to death, he said.

The five persons were injured on their back, stomach, shoulder, and thigh, said doctors of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital where they were admitted.

The leopard was suspected to have come out from nearby Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in search of her lost cub missing for the last few days, Saikia said.

Leopard attacks teacher in Doon locality, India

A leopard, on Monday evening, entered a wedding hall in Premnagar, injured a school teacher and triggered panic in the area. The animal escaped before forest department officials could capture it. The incident brought to light the department's incompetence and unpreparedness in dealing with such situations.

Sources said, Kiran Joshi, a teacher at Mahrishi Vidya Mandir had gone to Uttaranchal Wedding Point to discuss arrangements for a school function to be held at the hall, on Aug 5 and Aug 6, with the manager Nadim Kureshi.

As soon as Joshi pushed open the door and entered the hall to take a look at the facilities, the leopard, which was hiding inside pounced on her. Kureshi, who was accompanying the teacher, immediately dragged her out and locked the door, thus locking the big cat inside. Joshi was rushed to the hospital where her injured left hand was operated upon and the forest department was notified as well.

A wild leopard mauled six people in a village in rural India, including police and forest rangers. The attack happened yesterday in Prakash Nagar near Siliguri in West Bengal, a village of about 3,000 people. The leopard was finally tranquilized and died at a veterinarian's office from the barrage of blows from the police and forest rangers.

An eight-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a leopard in Piyava village of Savarkundla taluka in Amreli district. The girl Janu Katariya is being treated at a hospital in Amreli.

A native of Madhya Pradesh, Janu was sleeping outside a makeshift tenement in a farm on the outskirts of the village when the wild cat attacked her at around 2am.

Her father Indra Singh, who was irrigating the farm, rushed to the spot on hearing the noise to see the leopard carrying away his daughter. He threw an iron equipment at the leopard to save his daughter following which the animal dropped the child and fled.
