New comet ISON pictures: The comet of the century blazes green

Show up ISON! You have got the green light! The latest images of ISON show the 'Comet of the Century' shining green! October 8 2013This stunner was captured by Adam Block on Ocotober 8 2013, just before sunrise, atop Mount Lemmon. This beautiful image features ISON's greenish coma, trailed by a long, straight tail.

2013 is Strange: Part 20, September

Image
In late September, we saw an earthquake giving birth to a new island, deluges all around the world, volcanic eruptions, apparent outgassing in the sea off Rome, daily fireball sightings, weird red skies (from increased cometary dust?) and other unusual apparitions in the sky... 2013 sure is strange!

Here is my new channel exclusively devoted to my series "2013 IS STRANGE".

A near-Earth asteroid about a fifth the size of the space rock thought to have killed the dinosaurs has been discovered by a Russian-operated observatory in New Mexico

The kilometer-wide asteroid, dubbed 2013 TB80, was first spotted on Wednesday by the remotely run ISON-NM observatory and was later confirmed by US and Japanese astronomers, the International Astronomical Union said in an online statement.

The asteroid, believed to be the 704th largest with an orbit that comes relatively near Earth, does not pose a danger of crashing into our planet, said the head of the observatory that made the discovery.

"It's a big asteroid, but it poses no danger for us," Leonid Elenin, who lives in the Moscow Region, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

Extremely bright meteor explodes over Central Bosnia

Image
Translated by SOTT.net reader

This morning at 05:51 hours an extremely brilliant meteor exploded over central Bosnia, authorities announced from the Astronomical Society Orion from Sarajevo. Despite partly cloudy weather this phenomenon has been registered in the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute in Sarajevo and the meteorological station Gradačac, where recently a meteor camera is set.

A joint project of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute and Astronomical Society Orion from Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina on establishing a meteor network gives new results. From recordings from two stations is the trajectory of the body determined. A piece of cosmic material 'turned' on at an altitude of about 120 kilometers. After 36 km of flight, with an explosion the meteor shuts down at an altitude of 95 kilometers. At the moment of greatest shine the meteor had a magnitude of -4.5", cited from Orion.

Doomed sun-diving comet

NASA's SOHO spacecraft's cameras have been following a ~32-foot wide Kreutz family comet on its way to its fiery demise on October 10th, 2013. A comet of this size has a small chance of survival.

New Data: Will Comet ISON survive its close perihelion passage?

It's the question on every astronomer's mind this season, both backyard and professional: will Comet C/2012 S1 ISON survive perihelion?

Now, new studies released today at the American Astronomical Society's 45th Annual Division for Planetary Sciences meeting being held this week in Denver suggests that ISON may have the "right stuff" to make it through its close perihelion passage near the Sun. This is good news, as Comet ISON is expected to be the most active and put on its best showing post-perihelion... if it survives.

Researchers Matthew Knight of the Lowell Observatory and Research Scientist Jian-Yang Li of the Planetary Science Institute both presented a compelling portrait of the characteristics and unique opportunities presented by the approach of comet ISON to the inner solar system.

Could a comet have caused the Great Chicago Fire of 1871?

Could a comet have caused the Great Chicago Fire of 1871? For three days, October 8-10, 1871, Chicago was burning. It was a rain of fire and terror as the wood buildings burned to the ground.

Ironically, the O'Leary house (Mrs. O'Leary of the famous cow and lantern theory) was left standing on DeKoven Street. The Water Tower also remained. Most of what was then Chicago was in ruins.

At the same time, there were fires burning in other parts of llinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. The Great Peshtigo Fire (in Peshtigo, Wisconsin) is still considered one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.

There were also fires in Urbana, Illinois and Holland, Michigan.

Oklahoma pipeline explosion sparks large fire, prompting evacuations

A pipeline explosion in a rural northwestern Oklahoma town sent a fireball hundreds of feet into the air, and emergency responders on Wednesday were still at the scene, trying to extinguish the flames.

Deputy Cliff Brinson with the Harper County Sheriff's Department said the blast and fire sounded like the roar of jet engines and that the flames have reached two football field lengths into the sky, CBS reported.

Nobody's been injured, but residents living two miles away from the scene have been evacuated.

Northern Natural Pipeline engineers are still trying to cut the flow of natural gas. The explosion occurred Tuesday evening, but a day later, the fire was still raging.

One commenter at the local KSN television news site said in an early Wednesday morning Internet post: "We are seeing a glow from Lewis, Kansas."

Comment: The uploader on youtube wrote this about the explosion:

A huge explosion tore through a pipeline in Harper, Oklahoma, late on October 8, sparking a fire that could be seen up to 70 miles away. Firefighters and emergency crews from surrounding counties responded. Residents as far away as southern Kansas reported seeing flames. Credit: Spencer Albracht.

Comment: Was the explosion ignited by meteorites from above? There certainly has been an enormous increase in fireballs lately:

Scientists discover ancient Earth comet impact

Comet ISON is getting closer to making its close pass by the sun, but what would happen if it had a brush with our planet instead? New evidence shows it would be devastating.

International scientists have discovered the first ever evidence of a comet entering Earth's atmosphere and exploding. This celestial object rained down fire across the Earth, obliterating every life form in its path.

The team's discovery provides the first definitive proof of a comet striking Earth millions of years ago. It also helps to give scientists a peak into how comets help shape the solar system.

"Comets always visit our skies - they're these dirty snowballs of ice mixed with dust - but never before in history has material from a comet ever been found on Earth," Professor David Block, of Wits University, said in a statement.
