Tasmania woke up to a rare summer snowfall this Christmas Day, with snow falling on elevated parts of the island and dusting the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington above Hobart.

Snow has been recorded as low as 700 metres above sea level, as the state continues to experience the effects of a cold outbreak that began late Tuesday and persisted through Wednesday.

Weatherzone said the summer snowfall is driven by a moisture-laden airmass from polar regions, pushed northwards over Tasmania by a meridional wave in the jet stream.

The phenomenon is responsible for the speckled cloud patterns visible over Tasmania and coastal parts of the southeast mainland.

A pair of snowy owls, the latest celebrity visitors to the beach and pier near Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, have drawn hundreds for a glimpse at the Arctic birds of prey.

Several dozen birdwatchers were still gathered at the pier at Montrose Beach just before sunset Tuesday afternoon. The city has closed a section of the pier for the black-and-white-feathered guests, and signs in the area advise spectators to keep at least 300 feet away as a "warm welcome" for the birds.

About 4:15 p.m., one snowy owl could be spotted perched atop a pole at the end of the concrete pier stretching into Lake Michigan, while the other was resting at the far side of the pier.

"It's all a gamble," a birdwatcher was heard telling a group who arrived just in time for a peek at the owls.

December 1 normally marks the start of Australia's meteorological summer — a day associated with rising temperatures, beach weather, and the beginning of the country's hottest stretch of the year. Instead, parts of southeastern Australia woke up to fresh snow on Monday, December 1, as a burst of unusually cold air swept across the region.

The out-of-season snowfall was reported in higher elevations of Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales, where ski areas and mountain towns briefly returned to wintry conditions despite the calendar shift. Photos and videos shared to social media on Monday morning showed snow blanketing alpine roads, dusting cars, and coating peaks that had already transitioned into their off-season landscapes.

Vermont's Jay Peak smashes 25-year-old record hitting 103 inches of snowfall already this season

Jay Peak, Vermont, is having one of its best starts to a ski season in over 25 years. It already had 99 inches of snow on Tuesday in November, while some ski resorts out West had not even opened for the 2025-26 season. Jay Peak went over 100 inches on Thanksgiving. The total snowfall Jay Peak has received so far this season is now sitting at 103 inches, and it's not even December.

Jay Peak's weatherman, Tim Kelley, projected an additional four to five inches on Thanksgiving, which would have pushed Jay Peak over the 100-inch mark for the season. Jay Peak received four inches of snow on Thanksgiving evening. Currently, Jay Peak's base depth is between 16 and 36 inches, and it has 23 trails, a terrain park, and four lifts operating.

A low-pressure system is forecast to move in this weekend, bringing some Arctic air. These snow cycles are expected to continue through the first week of December.

Last season, the resort recorded 475 inches of snow, its highest total since the 2016-17 season, when it recorded 491 inches. Will Jay Peak have another great year? If November is any indication of what is yet to come, then the answer is a definite yes.
