Untimely snow damages apple orchards in South Kashmir

The untimely snowfall that started from Friday night in Kashmir has come not just too early in the season but also as a blight on the valley's apple orchards.

Reports reached Rising Kashmir from south Kashmir's Shopian district said the orchards haves suffered extensive damage caused to apple trees due to the heavy snow that accumulated on leaves and branches.

At least 13 people, including 10 trekkers, have died at separate places in Uttarakhand after getting trapped due to snowfall in the mountainous region, officials said on Thursday. The dead include three porters working for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), posted along the India-China border in Uttarkashi district. Five people have been rescued while six remain missing.

One of the trekkers' groups went missing en route to Lamkhaga Pass near Harsil in Uttarkashi district, 230 km from Dehradun, on October 14. Of the nine porters accompanying them, six managed to return safely. They informed the authorities about the three missing porters and eight trekkers.

District disaster management officer (Uttarkashi) Devendra Patwal said the rescuers compromising State Disaster Response Force and air force personnel spotted five of the bodies near Lamkhaga Pass on Thursday morning. "The bodies will soon be airlifted from the spot," he said. "The rescue workers managed to rescue one of the trekkers who was found alive there. He has been shifted to the army hospital in the district." Seven of these eight missing trekkers were from West Bengal while one was from Delhi.

The autumn holiday for Finnish schoolchildren may seem more like a winter vacation with subzero temperatures in Lapland and snow making an appearance in central parts of the country.

There are sunny skies in the forecast for the early part of the autumn holiday week, but as of Wednesday, a powerful low-pressure front is likely to bring a change to the weather.

In most parts of Finland, schoolchildren are enjoying a week's break from classes but in some areas, many will be dressing for winter weather.

The week is expected to be a real mixed bag, kicking off with mostly sunny skies around the country, then on to rain, sleet and snow, and nighttime temperatures below freezing even in southern areas.

We are an arrogant lot these days, and we tend to underestimate the importance of our governor and creator. We forget that we were once just a clod of cooled-down solar dust; we forget that without the Sun there would have been no photosynthesis, no hydrocarbons - and that it was the great celestial orb that effectively called life into being on Earth. In so far as we are able to heat our homes or turn on our computers or drive to work it is thanks to the unlocking of energy from the Sun.

As a species, we human beings have become so blind with conceit and self-love that we genuinely believe that the fate of the planet is in our hands - when the reality is that everything, or almost everything, depends on the behaviour and caprice of the gigantic thermonuclear fireball around which we revolve.

I say all this because I am sitting here staring through the window at the flowerpot and the bashed-up barbecue, and I am starting to think this series of winters is not a coincidence. The snow on the flowerpot, since I have been staring, has got about an inch thicker. The barbecue is all but invisible. By my calculations, this is now the fifth year in a row that we have had an unusual amount of snow; and by unusual I mean snow of a kind that I don't remember from my childhood: snow that comes one day, and then sticks around for a couple of days, followed by more.

Comment: Eight year later, Boris is Prime Minister, Piers Corbyn is in and out of jail for protesting the regime's enforcement of globalist diktats on 'Covid countermeasures', and the British government is at the forefront of 'achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030' (or whenever). And BoJo apparently now believes 'mankind is higher than our creator', going by his recent speech at the UN General Assembly on how 'we' must reduce 'the temperature of the planet by 1.5C NOW!'

China's energy crisis deepened on Friday as cold weather swept into much of the country and power plants scrambled to stock up on coal, sending prices of the fuel to record highs.

Electricity demand to heat homes and offices is expected to soar this week as strong cold winds move down from northern China. Forecasters predict average temperatures in some central and eastern regions could fall by as much as 16 degrees Celsius in the next 2-3 days.

Shortages of coal, high fuel prices and booming post-pandemic industrial demand have sparked widespread power shortages in the world's second-largest economy. Rationing has already been in place in at least 17 of mainland China's more than 30 regions since September, forcing some factories to suspend production and disrupting supply chains.

Heavy snow is registered this Saturday in Ushuaia and other areas of Tierra del Fuego with cold air that will reach southern Brazil on Tuesday.

A blizzard has hit southern Argentina since late morning this Saturday. The flakes began to fall in the city of Ushuaia around five in the morning and since then the white precipitation has not stopped. The snow intensified at times and fell hard, which brought accumulation and whitened the city of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego.

According to data from the Ushuaia airport, snow was heavy in the early afternoon of this Saturday with a temperature between 0ºC and 1ºC. Since the end of the night, the temperature in Argentina's southernmost city has barely fluctuated, varying between -1ºC and 1ºC. Meteorologist Nacho Lopez Amorim, from the National Weather Service, described the snowfall for the second half of October on his social networks as "impressive".

Why is it that rational folks around the planet put the priority of climate action so low? Well, first off, there are serious issues out there that affect us today — affordable food, jobs, healthcare, reliable energy for farmers and householders, real stuff, not a bunch of climate blowhards screaming that the sky is falling.

And the second reason is, folks know in their heart of hearts that science is all about making falsifiable predictions ... and in that regard, climate science is a dumpster fire.

Lee Canyon saw 7" of snow overnight as some of the first snowfall of the season for the mountains near Las Vegas.


Comment: The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Oct 12:
Parts of Mount Charleston saw up to 11 inches of snow Monday night, but the National Weather Service said the frosty weather isn't expected to continue this week.

Meteorologist Brian Planz said the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon recorded seven inches of snow, with higher elevation areas measuring 10 to 11 inches.

We have had an extraordinary stretch of fall weather but in the end, we all know the winds of Lake Erie will soon be whipping up the dreaded lake effect snow and playing havoc with our travel plans around northeast Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Transportation works long hours coordinating and executing their snow removal plan but as it stands now they have a looming problem in that they have been unable to hire anywhere near the number of seasonal plow drivers they need.

Statewide, ODOT hires 550 drivers for the winter all of whom are guaranteed 40 hours and week and in most cases work overtime hours just about every week.

They are critical workers to the job ODOT needs to accomplish and at this point, ODOT has managed to hire only about half the drivers they need statewide and that number holds in northeast Ohio.
