The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck just offshore of Hawaii's Big Island on Sunday afternoon.

The quake hit at 11:48 a.m. Hawaii Time (5:48 p.m. Eastern Time) about 27 km south-southeast of Naalehu, or just off the southern tip of the Big Island. Several small aftershocks occurred nearby following the earthquake.

The epicenter, with a depth of 523.9 km, was initially determined to be at 21.058 degrees south latitude and 174.465 degrees east longitude.

According to preliminary estimates, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, and the epicenter was located a long way off the coast. So far, there are no reports of injuries or property damage.

A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck in the vicinity of Macquarie Island in the South West Pacific Ocean on Thursday night, the US Geological Survey reported.

As of now, there was no indication of a tsunami threat in the area.

According to Australian government agency Geoscience Australia, the depth of one of the tremors was recorded at 1 kilometer.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 jolted Tokyo and surrounding areas late on Thursday, stopping train lines and causing sporadic power cuts, but there were no reports of major damage, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said.

The tremor, at 10:41 p.m. (1341 GMT), registered "strong-5" on Japan's intensity scale, a level that could cause some damage to buildings and power cuts, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake had an epicenter in Chiba prefecture, to the east of the capital Tokyo. There was no danger of a tsunami from the quake, accoring to NHK.

Shallow magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits southwestern Pakistan, kills at least 20

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck southwestern Pakistan early Thursday, killing at least 20 people and leaving 300 others injured, according to local authorities.

The quake occurred 15 kilometers northeast of Harnai in Balochistan Province at 3:01 a.m. local time at a depth of 9 km, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by a magnitude 4.6 quake in the same area two hours later.

The death toll is feared to rise as people are believed to have been buried under collapsed homes and other buildings. Rescue efforts are reportedly being hampered as roads have become impassable due to landslides.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Balochistan said at least 300 people were brought to hospitals after the quake, including those critically injured.

More than 1000 quakes have been detected near Keilir mountain over the past 24 hours of which one have been located with a maximum magnitude of 4.2 on 2 October.

4 quakes during the past 24 hours were recorded with magnitudes of 3 or more located about 1.3 km SW of Keilir.

Earthquakes have been occurring on the Reykjanes peninsula and in the southwest corner.

Scientists have recorded the largest underwater volcanic eruption of lava, which created a new volcano on the seafloor in the Indian Ocean.
The largest underwater eruption ever recorded has created a volcano on the seafloor that is 2,690 feet tall.

The volcano, which is twice as tall as the Empire State Building, was not present off the eastern coast of the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean before an earthquake shook the island 2018.

The underwater seismic event generated over 11,000 detectable earthquakes in what the authors of a Nature paper documenting it describes as a "major magmatic event." The event, which caused the deformation of the seafloor was so great it was registered beyond the Indian Ocean and around the globe.

"Volcanic eruptions shape Earth's surface and provide a window into deep Earth processes," the authors said. "This is the largest active submarine eruption ever documented."

An erupting volcano in the Canary Islands has blown open a third fissure - sending a fresh river of lava down the mountainside.

It came as authorities recorded eight new earthquakes up to magnitude 3.5 on the island of La Palma on Friday.

They are now waiting to see whether lava from the new fissure - which burst open around 400m to the north of original eruption site - will join the main flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano range, which has reached the Atlantic Ocean.
