But what do I know?
- YEEEEEEEES!!!
BIG CAVEAT: I do NOT recommend visiting the following link unless you have a web browser equipped with the NoScript plugin. Or just disable Javascript altogether in your browser.
A few days ago an article appeared on the SlashDot website. SlashDot used to be one of the premiere "tech news" web sites. Not so much for the articles they featured but for the comments from the "SlashDot community." But after being sold & several other bad decisions most all of the "intelligent commentary" migrated elsewhere.
The commenters that remain seem to comprise a cesspool of authoritarian followers, shills, trolls & other assorted characters.
The article "Ask Slashdot: How Are You Handling COVID-19?" [Link] could be regarded as an exemplary example of "fear porn." And if you're wondering what the opposite of SoTT commentary looks like then search no further.
Starting some of the author's perspective on the situation:
1. 2.415 million active reported infectedBeing a SoTT reader those numbers seemed a bit high. In fact: doing a Google search at the time the article was published showed numbers considerably lower.
2. 7% infected death rate globally
3. 6% infected death rate in U.S.
Early on in the comments a few brave individuals pointed out the skewed interpretation of the data and had enough "moderation points" to be visible. Those comments have been "modded down" to the point of being nearly invisible.
The comments that have been "modded up" and are thus more visible include gems like:
Stop reading the conspiracy theories. Absolutely no country is over-reporting COVID-19 deaths. No [sic] the Chinese saving face. Not the Americans and their nearly bankrupt hospitals. Not he Australians largely unaffected with completely publicly funded healthcare. Not the Europeans. Even the bloody king of testing South Korea reported excess mortality figures.(emphasis from the original)
And:
Freedom also means you are responsible for your actions. If you ignore the advice of public health officials, spread a contagious disease, and someone dies as a result of your actions (even if the actions are taken as a result of ignorance), you have committed negligent homicide. A jury of grieving grandchildren or parents may not show you any mercy. It just goes on & on & on with many more comments along similar lines. But they have hope. The consensus seems to be that the vaccine will be ready within a year.
So if you're wondering who the people in the "Picture of the Day" saying "JAAAAAAAA!" might be... then there are apparently quite a few of them posting comments to SlashDot these days.
