Drugged nation: Overdose deaths soaring from anti-anxiety drugs

deaths benzos
Headlines about America's worsening drug epidemic have focused on deaths from opioids—heroin and prescription painkillers such as OxyContin. But overdose deaths have also soared among the millions of Americans using benzodiazepine drugs, a class of sedatives that includes Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin, according to a study led by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Health System and the Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania. Their findings appear online today in the American Journal of Public Health.

Marcus Bachhuber, M.D., M.S."We found that the death rate from overdoses involving benzodiazepines, also known as 'benzos,' has increased more than four-fold since 1996—a public health problem that has gone under the radar," said lead author Marcus Bachhuber, M.D., MS., assistant professor of medicine at Einstein and attending physician, internal medicine at Montefiore. "Overdoses from benzodiazepines have increased at a much faster rate than prescriptions for the drugs, indicating that people have been taking them in a riskier way over time."

An estimated 1 in 20 U.S. adults fills a benzodiazepine prescription during the course of a year. The drugs are prescribed for conditions including anxiety, mood disorders and insomnia.

Comment: The pharmaceutical industry's control of medicine has insured that doctors are primed to hand out pills, rather than discuss alternatives such as exercise, supplements or other techniques such as meditation and yoga that could have overall positive effects on their patient's quality of life.

Burn! Nora Gedgaudas weighs in on the recent paleo mouse study

mice and man
An article titled "Paleo diets = weight gain" released through the University of Melbourne has hit the mainstream press in no small way. In it, researchers are extolling the virtues of their new mouse study being used to decry low carbohydrate/high fat Paleo diets as "causing weight gain" and leading to other adverse metabolic changes leading to diabetes and other related symptoms.

In the ill-conceived but much ballyhooed study, two groups of overweight mice with pre-diabetes symptoms were split into separate groups. One group was placed on a low-carbohydrate (20%), high-fat (60%) diet (LCHF) supposedly "similar" to certain Paleo diets. The other group remained on their normal diet.

After eight weeks, the group on the LCHF diet gained more weight, their glucose intolerance worsened and their insulin levels rose. They gained 15 per cent of their body weight and their fat mass doubled from two per cent to almost four per cent.

The many benefits of earthing: Is the best medicine around right beneath our feet?

earthing
As we move through our very fast paced lives and become more aware of the negative impact of stress and other lifestyle factors on our body, we have created a multitude of industries, therapies and supplements to counter-act the damage we do to ourselves and each other every day.

What if we knew there was a simple medicine we could take each day that almost instantly reduces stress and inflammation, slows down aging, eliminates chronic pain and balances our adrenals and hormones - all while improving blood flow and infusing our bodies with more anti-oxidants than a truck full of blueberries? On top of that, the only known side effects are positive feelings of calm coupled with increased energy! What if we also knew that this medicine is totally free and accessible to all... right beneath our feet?

Earthing (noun): The process of absorbing the earth's free flowing electrons through the soles of ones feet.

Anti-Vaxxers aren't stupid - they are informed

Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and the government have a lot of power over children's lives. That can make parents act irrationally.

Among scientists and in the media, anti-vaxers have earned a certain reputation. "They just don't know something, or they're anti-science, or there's just something pathological about them," as Mark Largent, a professor at Michigan State University and the author of Vaccine: The Debate in Modern America, characterized it. There is near-consensus among researchers that widespread immunization is crucial for children and American public health. Yet, according to Largent, 40 percent of American parents have either refused or delayed a recommended vaccine for one of their kids.

Comment: Mark Largent states: "They just don't know something, or they're anti-science, or there's just something pathological about them" What is pathological about being informed Mr Largent?! Or asking well researched questions based on published studies seriously questioning the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations?

Probiotics to the rescue: The right gut microbes can help infants grow, even when malnourished

© Lucy Bollinger/Washington University in St. LouisIn Malawi, studies of infant growth—and undergrowth—are revealing a key role for microbes.
Almost 180 million children across the globe are stunted, a severe, disabling consequence of malnutrition and repeated childhood infections that puts them at risk for cognitive impairment and disease. New studies now point to another player in stunting: the gut microbiome. The right combination of microbes, it seems, can tip the balance between stunting and healthy growth, even when calories are scarce—a tantalizing, if preliminary, clue to possible interventions.

The three studies, reported in this week's issues of Science and Cell, "are a watershed moment in global health generally, and in nutrition specifically," says William Petri, Jr., an infectious disease expert at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Petri was not involved in the current work, but he has spent years tracking the health of infants in Bangladesh. He and others have long been frustrated by the inability of dietary supplements to reverse the negative effects of poor nutrition.

When Petri heard that gut bacteria might influence obesity, he reasoned that they might also influence a person's response to hunger. So he and Tahmeed Ahmed from the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh teamed up with Jeffrey Gordon, a microbiologist at Washington University in St. Louis in Missouri, to collect monthly fecal samples from healthy and malnourished Bangladeshi children under 2. Petri and Gordon found that as children matured, their community of gut bacteria normally shifted as well. But as they reported in 2014, stunted children didn't have the appropriate bacterial community for their age, but an "immature" one more typical of a younger child.

Comment: Interesting find! This adds to the growing list of reasons of why it's important to improve our gut health and adopt a diet that supports, rather than inhibits, good gut bacteria.

Diabetes and obesity linked to emulsifiers and additives in processed foods

    ice cream ingredients
Studies on the human gut have added further evidence that emulsifiers and additives found in most processed foods are linked to obesity, diabetes and inflammatory bowel disorders.

Studies have used mice to test the effect of two common emulsifiers - carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate-80 - on the microbiome make up and metabolism, finding that relatively low-level concentrations of the emulsifiers resulted in distinct alterations to the gut microbial ecosystem (microbiota) and led to low-grade inflammation and the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Interestingly enough polysorbate-80 it is also an emulsifier used in popular brands of ice cream. The facts is preservatives, emulsifiers, and sweeteners have saturated the food supply for more than four decades.

Comment: Avoid these complications by eating natural, non-processed foods that do not come from a box or a restaurant.

Gardasil warning issued by the American College of Pediatricians

At the end of January, the American College of Pediatricians issued a warning against Gardasil, the FDA and CDC approved vaccine (that's supposed to save girls and boys from cancer). As they are "committed to children's health", they feel they can no longer remain silent about the safety concerns. See their full statement here.

    From the article:
"THE COLLAGE SAYS THAT IN ADDITION TO CONCERNING CORRELATIONS BETWEEN GARDASIL AND PREMATURE OVARIAN FAILURE, THEY ARE ALSO CONCERNED WITH THE PRE-RELEASE VACCINE TESTING METHODS UTILIZED BY GARDASIL MAKER MERCK. PRE-LICENSURE SAFETY TRIALS FOR GARDASIL USED A PLACEBO THAT CONTAINED POLYSORBATE 80 AS WELL AS AN ALUMINUM ADJUVANT, WHICH ARE BOTH CONTAINED WITHIN THE VACCINE. THEREFORE, IF EITHER OF THESE INGREDIENTS COULD CAUSE OVARIAN DYSFUNCTION, AN INCREASE IN AMENORRHEA PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DETECTED. THE COLLEGE NOTES THAT THE PLACEBO-CONTROLLED TRIALS WERE HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE PLACEBOS WERE ACTUALLY NOT PLACEBOS AT ALL."

Lead contaminated water and smart meters are both deliberate crimes against humanity

    smart meter
In the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area there's a tremendous show of support and solidarity for the people of Flint, Michigan, being forced to drink tap water that was contained with lead (Pb) for a year, perhaps more. Several Philadelphians have taken it upon themselves to conduct bottled water campaigns, which netted thousands of bottles of water. They even drove a truckload of bottled water to Flint, and then delivered it door-to-door. That's how the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, shows its concern for others!

That concern has not stopped with ordinary citizens. Philadelphia leaders also got involved and showed their support. [1] PA State Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown is on record as saying, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," recalling the words of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

However, Minister Rodney Muhammad probably sized up the Flint water crises more accurately when he said, "This is not a government mishap. This is a crime." [1] Muhammad inferred that yellow crime tape should be strung around the perimeter of Flint city! Councilwoman Helen Gym said the Philadelphia City Council is joining in the national outcry for the Department of Justice to conduct an investigation.

Flashback The biochemical manipulation of humanity: Food, water & injections

    Brave New World
Many prominent scientists and authors have on various occasions stated that in the future, the common people would be manipulated through chemicals in their food, water and injections, to suit the needs of the people that govern them.

In his 1931 book, the Scientific Outlook, Bertrand Russell wrote:
"Perhaps by means of injections and drugs and chemicals the population could be induced to bear whatever its scientific masters may decide to be for its good."
One of the most famous examples of the idea of biochemical manipulation of the underclass was raised in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley in 1932. In Brave New World, the lower classes are exposed to a variety of chemicals before they are "born" that reduce their intelligence and adult height, and prepare them for the role they will fullfil when they grow up. Alcohol is used, lower castes receive less oxygen, and they are exposed to x-rays. The lower castes are also exposed to certain hormones to make them infertile. 70% of women are exposed in the womb to male hormones, and turned into so called "freemartins", sterilized women who exhibit masculine behavior.
