Pharma price gouging: The real reasons prescription drugs are so expensive

bigpharma, prescription drug prices
Kenneth Frazier, a chief executive of Merck & Co. and chairman of the industry lobbying group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, wants you to know why drug prices have gotten so out of hand.

According to Frazier:
"Merck has increased the prices of its drugs on a yearly basis, but we've tried to be constrained in how we've done it, in a way we think doesn't prevent people from affording our drugs. There's a huge challenge we face between trying to optimize access to our drugs in whatever pricing we establish, and trying to ensure that you have the resources to continue to pursue the next generation of drugs. We try to take a responsible, balanced approach."
When asked by the Wall Street Journal, "What would be a way to link the price of drugs to the value they bring?" Frazier replied:
"For example, charging people a price commensurate with the actual outcomes that drugs produce. Now, there are a lot of barriers in the system to sharing risk with some of our customers. The laws around what we can and cannot do in our pricing model were made for a different environment. They weren't made for performance-based contracting or risk-sharing or any of those kinds of experimental approaches to pricing that Merck actually is very eager to try out with some of its customers."

Comment: The only way to understand the rampant greed of this despicable industry is to understand that the characteristics of those who run these corporations are noticeably similar to those of psychopaths: lack of conscience, lack of remorse for evils done to others, indifference to the suffering of its victims, willingness to exploit others, always looking for ways to make money and willing to cause or contribute to the financial ruin of others.

Obesity paradox: New study reveals cells with higher fat content outlive lean cells

Cells with higher fat content outlive lean cells, says a new study from Michigan State University.

This study has implications for larger organisms, such as humans, as the results support the phenomenon known as the "obesity paradox." This concept shows that overweight people have the lowest all-cause mortality rates while fit people, oddly enough, have mortality rates comparable to those categorized as slightly obese.

"The obesity paradox baffles scientists across numerous disciplines," said Min-Hao Kuo, MSU biochemist and molecular biologist who published the study in the current issue of PLoS Genetics. "But when it comes to yeast, which is an excellent model for the studies of human aging, increasing the cellular content of triacylglycerol, or fat, extends the lifespan."

Kuo's team was the first to show a positive correlation between Triacylglycerol, or TAG, content and lifespan. The connection provides support for the obesity paradox theory, he added.

Based on Monsanto's faulty research: The FDA allows Glyphosate in your food

glyphosate
Despite the World Health Organization's classification of glyphosate — the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup — as a probable carcinogen for humans last year, the product remains the top-selling herbicide worldwide. Though the agrichemical behemoth vociferously disputes the findings, researchers recently found Monsanto's claims are based on outdated and inadequate science.

Enough glyphosate, Truthout noted, "is now used to cover nearly every acre of cultivated cropland in the U.S.," leading to widespread glyphosate tolerance, including reports of "superweeds" that are virtually immune to repeated drenchings. Use of the dangerous weedkiller has increased by more than 100 times since it first came to market in 1974.

Comment: Worse than DDT: When you eat this, it ends up lingering in your gut
Glyphosate Persists in Soil, and Promotes Disease-Causing Pathogens

According to Dr. Huber, glyphosate can accumulate and persist in the soil for years. Persistence is determined by biological activity, soil PH, clay content, and how firmly it's sequestered or absorbed in the soil. This is bad news, because glyphosate not only decimates beneficial microorganisms in the soil essential for proper plant function and high quality nutrition, it also promotes the proliferation of disease-causing pathogens. ..."The organisms that are stimulated are the pathogens," Dr. Huber says. "...all of the natural biological control organisms are very sensitive to that concentration of glyphosate.

..."All it does is make it possible for that plant to survive and to accumulate more glyphosate. We still change the soil ecology, microbial ecology, and...our intestinal microbiology."

To quickly recap, while glyphosate promotes the growth of more virulent pathogens, it also kills off beneficial bacteria that might keep such pathogens in check - in the soil, and in the gut of animals or humans that ingest the crop.

"[W]ith glyphosate, we also see an additional stimulation of virulence, so we see increased ability to cause disease, as well as the loss of the natural biological controls," Dr. Huber says.

It's important to understand that the glyphosate actually becomes systemic throughout the plant, so it cannot be washed off. It's inside the plant. And once you eat it, it ends up in your gut where it can wreak total havoc with your health, considering the fact that 80 percent of your immune system resides there and is dependent on a healthy ratio of good and bad bacteria.

Glyphosate destroys the gut and triggers autoimmune disease

crop spraying
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the popular herbicide, Roundup. Glyphosate toxicity is a big deal, and what you don't know just might kill you!

Many people routinely spray their lawns with this chemical totally unaware of the toxicity. In the United States, farmers are applying ever increasing amounts to their crops before harvest. According to the World Health Organization, glyphosate is now declared a "probable carcinogen" which means it may cause cancer.

The industry still asserts that it is totally safe for humans, however, one only needs to look at the data to know that is not true. Ignorance may be bliss, but I believe we may be on the verge of one of the most toxic man-made environmental disasters in history... and unfortunately this chemical is persistent in both the environment and the human body and is not easy to clean up. France's highest court found Monsanto guilty of lying as far back as 2008 about the toxicity of it's popular weedkiller, Roundup.

Gardasil propaganda is failing: Vaccination rates have declined more than 50%

gardasil info
Vaccination rates are steadily decreasing worldwide, and as more parents now become informed of one of the most unscientific vaccines in the history of vaccination, the HPV vaccine uptake is now dropping more than 50 percent since its introduction in 2006.

Two centuries of UK, USA and Australian official death statistics have shown conclusively and scientifically that modern medicine is not responsible for and played little part in substantially improved life expectancy and survival from disease in western economies.

The fact that many vaccines are ineffective is becoming increasingly apparent. Just a few years ago, Merck was slapped with two separate class action lawsuits contending they lied about the effectiveness of the mumps vaccine in their combination MMR shot, and fabricated efficacy studies to maintain the illusion for the past two decades that the vaccine is highly protective.

Comment: As more parents become informed, network with one another and don't take their doctor's word as gospel, vaccination rates will continue to decline.

Anti-Vaxxers aren't stupid - they are informed

Acid-blockers now linked to dementia among many other things

pump inhibitors
One simple rule that would save a lot of suffering in the world is to "never take a drug that has more severe side effects than your symptoms." A new study highlights this adage as it shows an extremely popular group of stomach acid-blocking drugs, the proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), are now linked strongly to another serious side effect - this time dementia.

This risk is added to the other conditions these drugs produce including osteoporosis, heart attacks, strokes, intestinal infections, bacterial pneumonia, and multiple nutrient deficiencies. Here is the blaring fact that not enough doctors and patients know. It is conservatively estimated by noted experts in conventional medicine that up to 70% of all PPI prescriptions are likely inappropriate. In alternative medical circles that number is 100%.

Popular examples of PPIs include Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid, and Aciphex.

These drugs are dominant medical treatment of peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and indigestion.

A new naked ape hypothesis: Did hairlessness evolve to allow humans to supplement their energy needs with sunlight?

woman in forest
The human obsession with nakedness constitutes a multi-billion dollar industry unto itself (pornography), but the fact that, among hundreds of different primates, we are the only one that is almost completely hairless, is rarely if ever considered. Indeed, understanding human nakedness may help to unlock the timeless enigma of how and where our species originated.

Have you ever considered the curious fact of human hairlessness? Except for facial hair in men, and scalp, under arm, and pubic hair in both men and women, we are alone among primates in having lost our protective and heat conserving coat of hair. While I'm certain some may contend nakedness was a default human condition, originating along with original sin in the Garden of Eden, the evidence of biology is hard to ignore (after all, we all live in this highly enigmatic body). Take embryogenesis as an example...

Unplug: Tips to digitally detox

digital overload

Electronic media (i.e., smart phones, televisions, or other electronic devices) has offered us unprecedented access to music, entertainment, information, and to each other. Internet access and electronic devices have offered so much value, however, that those 8 to 18 years old spend approximately 9.5 hours per day with electronic devices, according to a national study published in 2010 by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Too much of a good thing has consequences. For example, researchers studying health effects found that blue light from technology screens can disrupt sleep, and electromagnetic fields from electronics may contribute to various adverse health effects (including DNA damage, reproductive issues, and neurotoxicity). Furthermore, all that exposure to electronic media can contribute to obesity, negatively influence your brain (which is still developing until age 20), and develop unhealthy habits that are hard to break.

To create healthier balance, consider the tips below.

Syphilis: A new skeleton and an old debate

syphilis
A 19th-century illustration of a patient with syphilis
The recent discovery of ancient remains with signs of the disease shows how mysterious its origins are.

In June 1495, the Italian historian Niccolo Squillaci wrote a letter describing a horrific disease that was sweeping through Europe.

"There are itching sensations, and an unpleasant pain in the joints; there is a rapidly increasing fever," he wrote. "The skin is inflamed with revolting scabs and is completely covered with swellings and tubercules, which are initially of a livid red color, and then become blacker." And, tellingly, "It most often begins with the private parts."

"I exhort you to provide some new remedy to remove this plague from the Italian people," he concluded. "Nothing could be more serious than this curse, this barbarian poison."

Smell of death: Study says 99,000 Europeans die each year from toxic household fumes

Air fresheners and scented candles are supposed to improve the smell of a room, but a new report finds that these kind of household products are actually silent killers which could be responsible for nearly 100,000 deaths across Europe every year.

Researchers in the UK found that many domestic products, including anti-insect sprays, deodorants, and cleaning products, contain chemicals known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can cause cancer, particularly in children and elders.

"Every Breath We Take: The Lifelong Impact of Air Pollution" details how VOCs start off in a solid or liquid state, but then evaporate to pollute the air inside of homes.

High levels of a VOC called limonene, which can become the carcinogen formaldehyde when mixed with other airborne elements, have been found in numerous household products.
