Aftermath of Hurricane Kay causes massive flooding, waterfalls in California's Death Valley

It's been a summer of extreme extremes in California's Death Valley.

From flash flooding in August that left a vehicle swallowed in the mud to an extremely high, possibly record-breaking, September temperature of 127 degrees at Furnace Creek.

Now, the aftermath of Hurricane Kay has led to more heavy rainfall and an unlikely sight — waterfalls in one of the driest, hottest places in the world.

"Storms fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Kay caused localized, heavy damage in Death Valley National Park on Saturday afternoon," park authorities wrote on Facebook on Sunday, alongside a stunning video showing muddy waterfalls cascading down the mountainside by Badwater Basin.

An elderly man has died after an apparent attack by his pet kangaroo in Western Australia's Great Southern region.

Paramedics were called to the man's property in Redmond, near Albany on Sunday night after the 77-year-old was found by a relative with serious injuries.

Police were called to assist after the kangaroo became aggressive and prevented paramedics from accessing the injured man, who tragically died at the scene.

Police believe it was a wild animal which aged less than 12-months-old which was being kept as a pet.

'The kangaroo was posing an ongoing threat to emergency responders and the attending officers were required to euthanize the kangaroo by firearm,' a spokesman said.

Emergency services are yet to release details of the man's injuries.

For the third time this year, a dead whale has washed up on the Mendocino County coast. Yesterday morning, a deceased humpback whale was discovered in the waters off of Fort Bragg.

Elaine Tavelli, a resident of Fort Bragg, was on the coastal trail when down below she noticed the carcass of what clearly is a humpback whale.

Tavelli told us she was biking along the Fort Bragg coastal trail when she saw others pointing towards the animal. Two rangers passed by her and also confirmed the animal to be a humpback whale.

We are choosing to withhold the exact location to mitigate onlookers as marine biologists and researchers determine the next steps with the whale.

A pack of stray dogs mauled a seven-year-old boy to death at Sargana Road in Mailsi tehsil of Punjab's Vehari district, ARY News reported on Monday.

According to details, seven-year-old boy - identified as Tayyab - was playing outside his house when he was attacked by nearly 10 stray dogs.

The dogs dragged the child to the nearby field and mauled him to death. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived and shifted the body to the tehsil hospital for medico-legal formalities.

At least 46 people were killed when a strong earthquake struck southwestern China on Monday, state media reported, as violent tremors in a remote region damaged homes and left some areas without electricity.

The magnitude 6.6 quake hit about 43 kilometres (26 miles) southeast of the city of Kangding in Sichuan province at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

Tremors shook buildings in the provincial capital of Chengdu -- where millions are confined to their homes under a strict Covid lockdown -- and in the nearby megacity of Chongqing, local residents told AFP.

"I felt it quite strongly. Some of my neighbours on the ground floor said they felt it very noticeably," said Chen, a resident of Chengdu.

Earthquake death toll rises to 65 in Sichuan, China as aftershocks rattle province

At least 65 people are confirmed dead after an earthquake hit China's southwestern Sichuan province on Monday, according to Chinese broadcaster CCTV.

Aftershocks were still being felt on Tuesday, state media said, a day after the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a 6.6-magnitude quake shook the region southwest of Sichuan's capital Chengdu around 1 p.m. Monday.

So far 248 injuries have been reported and at least 12 people remain missing, according to state media.

The USGS said quake's epicenter was about 43 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of Kangding, a city of around 100,000 people. Over a million residents in surrounding areas are estimated to have experienced moderate tremors in the aftermath of the quake, it added.

Some homes were severely damaged in the quake, with images appearing to show whole buildings had collapsed into piles of bricks and wooden beams.

Death toll rises to 93 after powerful earthquake in China's Sichuan

The death toll from a magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck southwest China's Sichuan Province on September 5 has risen to 93, with 25 people still missing, China Media Group reported on Monday.

The toll from the quake hit 55 in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, while another 38 people were confirmed dead in Ya'an City.

Torrential, unrelenting rains swept through Chicago on Sunday, flooding basements and alleys, closing grocery stores and restaurants, and leaving cars floating under viaducts on streets impassable with deep water.

The extreme weather took the city by surprise, particularly the North Side of Chicago. Close to five inches of rain had fallen by late afternoon, according to Kevin Doom, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

"This has been a mess," he said. "The water rose pretty quickly this morning, so it caught a lot of people off guard."

At some intersections, cars were stranded in the rainwater after motorists drove through suddenly flooded roads. Homeowners whose basements had not seen water in years were unpleasantly surprised to discover that rainwater had surged up through drains, in some cases leaving an ankle-deep flood carrying a pungent smell of sewage. Grocery stores dealing with flooding closed their doors, and some businesses could not open at all.

In the last week, a new volcanic eruption began within the Kuril island chain at the Alaid volcano which has a history of highly explosive eruptions. Meanwhile in Iceland, an intense series of earthquake swarms rocked the north of the country, which some people thought had a magmatic signature. And, in New Zealand, the alert level of the White Island volcano was raised in response to a change in sensor readings.

At least 5 people have died and 10 are missing after severe flooding in the district of Darchula in Nepal. Meanwhile in neighbouring parts of Uttarakhand, India, at least one person has died in flooding in Pithoragarh districts.

Flooding struck on 09 September 2022 in Naugad and Mahakali municipalities in the district of Darchula after heavy rainfall caused the Lasku and Mahakali (also known as Sharda, Sarda or Kali) rivers to overflow, local media said. Landslides were also reported in the area.

Seven people were killed and four sustained injuries in lightning strikes in Rajasthan's Jhalawar and Udaipur districts as light to heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in eastern parts of the state, officials said on Sunday.

The meteorological department spokesperson said from Sunday morning till 5.30 pm, 34 mm rain was recorded in Sriganganagar, 30.6 mm in Barmer, 13 mm in Dugarpur and 11 mm in Bundi.

The deaths due to lightning were reported from Asnawar, Khanpur, Mandawar and Dangipura in the district on Saturday, they said.

Tidi SHO Gopal Krishna of Udaipur district said Manish, Manisha and a girl Haka were killed while four others suffered injuries due to lightning in Jabla village on Sunday evening.

Alligators are suddenly attacking boats in Texas and no one knows why

One alligator has been trapped and wardens remain vigilant at a waterway in Sugar Land, Texas after animals bit two boats in recent weeks - for the first time ever, residents say.

Everything started when an elderly rower accidentally hit a gator with an oar, says Dee Connors, president of the Greater Houston Rowing Club.

"On the second day, the alligator chomped the end of his boat and his boat started sinking, but he made it to shore," Ms Connors told KHOU.

But that wasn't the only attack; another followed last week, she said.

"Another one of the rowers was just rowing out behind me and another one of the alligators chomped the end of his boat, he didn't get it as hard as the first one so he was able to row it to shore," Connors told the station.
