Rain records broken as heavy downpours and thunderstorms continue in Australia

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are bringing widespread flooding to New South Wales and parts of Queensland.

The deluge hit Sydney on Saturday afternoon, as residents were told to brace for conditions to intensify throughout the night.

A damaging trough in New South Wales, first unleashed across the state's west, left several regions awash.

Despite only being October, Dubbo has now recorded its wettest year in 49 years, with about 882mm recorded up until 4pm today.

While at Bathurst, racing on Mount Panorama was thrown into chaos, after the Top-10 shootout was cancelled due to the torrential downpour.

The regional city has copped more than a month's worth of rain in a few days.

215 pilot whales die on Chatham Island - 3rd mass stranding within 3 weeks for the region

daed
A group of 215 pilot whales have died after they became stranded on a remote New Zealand island, environmentalists say.

Many of the whales were already dead when they were discovered in the northwest corner of Chatham Island, some 840 kilometres east of mainland New Zealand, environmental charity Project Jonah said.

"The Chatham Islands is a challenging spot for stranding response, known for great white sharks, remote beaches and a resident population of less than 800 people," the charity said on Facebook on Saturday.

Project Jonah said those factors meant the whales that were still alive had to be euthanised.

"While we always hope surviving whales are able to be refloated, this wasn't an option here."

Whale strandings are not uncommon on the Chatham Islands, with the largest event recorded in 1918 when more than 1000 animals died in a single stranding.

Flashback Cosmic ray flux and global cooling: the implications are upon us

Sun and Earth illustration
Article originally published on electroverse.net on April 30, 2021

GALACTIC Cosmic Rays are a mixture of high-energy photons and sub-atomic particles accelerated toward Earth by supernova explosions and other violent events in the cosmos; SOLAR Cosmic Rays are effectively the same, only their source is the Sun.

Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus have been launching cosmic ray balloons almost weekly since March 2015-before the pandemic threw a spanner in.

The team's published results reveal that atmospheric radiation reached record highs just as solar activity hit a new space age low — the correlation is clear for all to see, with additional proxy data revealing it has been the case for time-immemorial.

During solar minimums -the low point of the 11 year solar cycle- the Sun's magnetic field weakens and the outward pressure of the solar wind decreases. This allows more cosmic rays (CRs) to penetrate the inner solar system, including our planet's atmosphere:

Bear expert says British Columbia attack likely a rare case of black bear treating humans as food

Attack on family that sent three people to hospital appears to be a 'predaceous' incident

An expert in bear behaviour says an attack on a family in northeastern British Columbia that left two women with critical injuries appears to have been a rare example of a "predaceous" attack by a black bear.

Ellie Lamb, director of community outreach for the Get Bear Smart Society, says that by knocking down the women near Dawson Creek Monday night then staying close by them for more than an hour, the large boar bear was likely treating humans as food.

RCMP say they shot the bear dead after it was observed "guarding" the injured women, aged 30 and 48, and could not be chased off.

Lamb, a wildlife guide who serves on several B.C. advisory bodies related to human-bear interaction, says bears could exhibit predatory behaviour towards humans if improperly managed at a young age, but this was extremely uncommon.

'Unprecedented bird flu epidemic could presage year-round outbreak', warns bird charity

Nearly 50 million birds have been culled amid efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, which continues to ravage the Northern Hemisphere.

A highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 influenza, also known as avian flu, that plagued Europe and North America all summer shows no signs of relenting, officials warn. More than 2,600 outbreaks have been reported among domesticated flocks, as well as more than 3,500 cases in wild birds from 37 European countries, according to the latest overview of the epidemic from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

"I'm a scientist by training, and like all scientists, I'm used to taking a measured approach and don't take the language I use lightly," Jeff Knott, director of policy for the UK conservation charity, the RSPB, tells National Geographic. "But the severity of the situation and scale of the impact is unprecedented and very, very scary. It's a huge crisis that could turn into a catastrophe unless we get ahead of it."

Comment: Whilst it may be true that incidents of bird flu outbreaks may be on the rise - and in no small part thanks to factory farming practices that slowly destroy the health of livestock - it's also true that at least some of these declared outbreaks seem to serve another agenda, which is to cause deadly disruptions to the food supply:
