Blockbuster storm, bitter arctic outbreak to blast U.S. ahead of Christmas

In the days leading up to Christmas — one of the busiest travel times of the year — two extreme, disruptive and dangerous weather systems will affect large parts of the Lower 48 states: a very intense storm that will produce blinding snow, heavy rain and howling winds, and an associated outbreak of exceptionally cold air.

The large, powerful storm is set to explosively develop in the Midwest and Great Lakes late this week, unleashing heavy snow and strong winds — and the potential for blizzard conditions in some areas.

Possibly qualifying as a "bomb cyclone" because of its projected rapid strengthening, the storm could bring extreme impacts from snow and wind from the Plains to the interior Northeast between Thursday and Christmas Eve, seriously affecting several major population centers including Kansas City, St. Louis, Des Moines, Chicago, Milwaukee and Buffalo.While not everyone will see heavy snow this week, few areas outside California and the Southwest United States will escape what the National Weather Service is describing as "a massive surge of arctic air."

The mainland isn't the only one experiencing a major winter storm. Just a week after Mauna Loa stopped erupting, Winter Storm Warnings were issued for Hawaii's Big Island.

The National Weather Service issued the alert for heavy and blowing snow on Monday, with the Winter Storm Warning in effect until 6 a.m. HST on Tuesday.

Up to 8 inches of snow and winds gusting as high as 100 mph are possible on Big Island Summits above 10,500 feet.

Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, sits at 13,680 feet above sea level, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano, is just over 13,800 feet. Both are expected to see near-blizzard conditions.

This Monday, December 19, activity was recorded at the Popocatépetl volcano after an explosion with smoke and volcanic lava around 6:39 this morning, the National Civil Protection Coordination announced.

Through the San Nicolás de los Ranchos monitoring station, in Puebla, images were captured of the exact moment in which Popocatépetl erupted with lava bombs that rolled to the middle of the volcanic cone.

As reported by the National Civil Protection Coordination, the column of ash that caused the explosion reached a height of 2.4 kilometers moving to the Northeast.

An 83-year-old woman has died following a dog attack in Caerphilly. Police officers were called to an address in Heol Fawr, Caerphilly, at around 3.15pm on Saturday, December 3, following reports of a dog attack.

An 83-year-old woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a 55-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries, Gwent Police said in a statement at the time. The woman has since died at hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, December 20. The 55-year-old man is no longer at hospital.

Four people who were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury have been released under conditional bail. The dog, a large, black XL bully cross cane corso breed, was seized by officers and has been destroyed.

The investigation continues and Gwent Police officers will be making further enquiries in the local area.

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern California, the US Geological Survey has said, as local authorities and media reported thousands of power outages and bridge damage.

No injuries were immediately reported following Tuesday's earthquake, which occurred at 2:34 am near Ferndale, a small community about 345km (210 miles) northwest of San Francisco and close to the Pacific coast.

It was about 16.1 kilometres (10 miles) deep, USGS said.

There was no risk of a tsunami after the quake, the US tsunami warning system said.

At least 20 people have been injured - with some knocked unconscious - in a mass emergency onboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Arizona after it encountered severe turbulence.

Passengers were nearing the end of their seven-hour flight from Phoenix to Honolulu on Sunday morning when many were thrown out of their seats.

At a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Jon Snook, the Chief Operating Officer of Hawaiian Airlines confirmed that the seatbelt sign was on at the time. He said it was the 'worst case of turbulence' that he had ever encountered during his seven years with the airline.

It was confirmed that 11 people were seriously hurt, including several children and a 14-month-old baby. Nine others suffered from minor injuries and from those seven decided to take the bus to hospital for further treatment.

Areas of southern Thailand recorded more than 500 mm of rain in 24 hours on 18 December 2022.

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) flooding in the southern provinces of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. A total of 49 districts and 51,543 households have been affected.

The hardest hit areas were Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla Provinces.

In Narathiwat, 3 people died after being swept away by flood waters, DDPM said. Almost 30,000 households across 13 districts have been affected by flooding. Affected districts include Sukhirin, Si Sakhon, Rueso, Ra-ngae, Chanae, Mueang Narathiwat, Cho-airong, Su-ngai Padi, Bacho, Waeng, Su-ngai Kolok, Tak Bai and Yi-ngo.

Heavy snow has left thousands without power in New England and New York

Utility crews raced Saturday to restore power to tens of thousands of customers across New England and New York after a powerful storm dumped 2 feet of snow in some places.

More than 160,000 customers in New England were in the dark as of the afternoon and another 20,000 were without power in New York as heavy snow brought tree limbs onto power lines, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks outages across the country.

Restoration efforts were complicated by snow still falling in some places, making travel dangerous. Doug Foley, Eversource president of electric operations in New Hampshire, said snow-covered roads were making it tough for workers to reach communities in order to assess damage and make repairs.

A strong cold snap has brought record snowfalls to Niigata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan and the southern Tohoku region. Japan's Meteorological Agency warns that more snow is coming and advises people to be on high alert for traffic disruptions and other problems.

Weather officials said that as of 5 p.m. on Monday, the snow was about 2.2 meters deep in Ohkura Village, Yamagata Prefecture, and more than 1.8 meters deep in Niigata's Uonuma City.

Tadami Town in Fukushima Prefecture had a record 1.1 meters of snow during the 24 hours through Monday morning. The town's snow accumulation reached nearly 1.6 meters as of 5 p.m. on the day.

Heavy snowfall descended on the Russian capital on Sunday, disrupting traffic, delaying flights and leaving pavements buried with snow.

In parts of Moscow, snow piled into mounds over 30 centimetres (12 inches) high, something not usually observed until the end of winter in February, the Fobos weather centre said.

The last time a similar depth of snow was recorded in Moscow in mid-December was in 1989 and in 1993, Fobos added.
