At least one person died and thousands were evacuated from their homes as torrential rain battered Cuba's eastern Granma region, triggering widespread floods on Saturday (June 10).

Severe Flooding Hits Eastern Provinces After 360mm of Rain in 24 Hours

At least one person has died and thousands displaced after severe flooding in eastern parts of Cuba.

Flooding struck in the provinces of Granma, Las Tunas, Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey in after heavy rain from 08 to 09 June 2023.

The Instituto de Meteorología de Cuba (INSMET) reported 360 mm of rain in 24 hours to 09 June in Bartolomé Masó and 280.3 mm in Jiguani, both in Granma Province. Contramaestre in Santiago de Cuba Province recorded 248 mm and Vertientes in Camagüey Province saw 237 mm during the same period.

The worst affected areas were in the province of Granma, where one fatality was reported. The governor of the province said in a statement that thousands of homes were damaged and 279 partially or completely destroyed. As of 10 June, as many as 7,259 people in the province had been displaced.

Lightning strikes tree, sends branch crashing through roof in Redding, California

Thunderstorms returned to the Northstate Monday evening, and a lightning strike hit a tree in a Redding neighborhood, then landed a branch in a neighbor's roof.

"Lightning hit our tree while we were out front, 5 feet from the tree," Redding resident Dylan Gejeian said, from his Shasta View neighborhood next to Mountain View.

The tree was split in half when it was struck, sending a portion of the split top into the roof and dining room of a neighbor's home, he said. Thankfully, no one was hurt, he added.

The strike was caught on camera at 7:46 p.m. Gejeian shared a video from his Ring camera of the moment the lightning bolt came down.

11-year-old boy dies in stray dog attack in Kerala, India

A differently-abled 11-year-old boy, who was attacked by a group of stray dogs Sunday evening at Muzhappilangad near here, died at a hospital, police said.

Nihal, a resident of Kettinakam, was found grievously injured around 300 metres away from his house and was taken to a nearby hospital but could not be saved, they said.

"The boy with autism was missing from around 5 pm and a search party, comprising relatives, locals and the police, was looking for him in the locality. We found him around 8.30 pm near his house in a grievously injured manner and took him to the hospital," police said.

Heavy rain of 180 mm in 24 hours has caused flooding and landslides in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) where at least 5 people have died.

According to figures from the country's meteorological agency Sodexam, more than 180 mm of rain fell in Yopougon and 243 mm in Sassandra in 24 hours to 11 June 2023. Meanwhile Adiake saw 171 mm and San Pedro 201 mm during the same period.

The government reported a landslide occurred in the district of Yopougon Bel Air in Abidjan on 11 June. Several buildings were damaged and one completely destroyed. Five members of the same family died in the incident.

Three people died in eastern China after strong winds toppled a shipyard crane, authorities said on Sunday, as storms caused damage across the country, including large swaths of farmland.

The deaths of security staff in the city of Wuhu occurred after the 450-tonne crane keeled over on Saturday into the security post where they were stationed, the authorities said.

In Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China, large trees were felled on Saturday, crushing vehicles and blocking roads, local media reported.

Heavy rainfall across Assam has triggered flash floods in various parts of the state on Sunday.

Water logging led to artificial flash floods in several areas of Gohpur, Nalbari, Goroimari and Udalguri, leaving people in distress.

Nalbari town has been submerged under water after a spell of rain with every street transformed into waterways. The Nalbari Municipality's inability to prevent such floods has stirred immense anger among the locals. Consequently, protests have intensified, with citizens expressing their discontent and demanding immediate action.

The four-lane road construction in Gohpur is facing mounting criticism as locals demand immediate action to address the recurring problem. The impact of the artificial floods caused by heavy rains is evident as the town remains partially submerged. Traders are gripped with fear as their businesses suffer due to inaccessible roads and inundated marketplaces.

Dozens killed as heavy rain, floods inundate northwestern Pakistan

Dozens of people are dead as torrential rains and flooding inundated parts of northwestern Pakistan on Saturday.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority said that 145 others were injured in flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The districts of Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat were especially hard-hit, according to the English-language newspaper Dawn.

Twenty-eight people had been killed as of late Saturday, Pakistani broadcaster Geo News reported.
