At least 1 dead as heavy summer rains set off flash flooding in New York state - up to 8 inches of rainfall

A slow-moving storm system brought heavy rain across a wide section of New York State on Sunday evening, flooding streets, prompting dozens of rescues for drivers whose vehicles were stranded on inundated roads and causing at least one death, the authorities said.

The Hudson Valley was the most affected by the storm system on Sunday, with sections of the area getting between five and eight inches of rain, the National Weather Service said.

The epicenter of the storm struck West Point, the U.S. Military Academy in Orange County, which had about eight inches of rain as of Sunday night.

Trooper Steven V. Nevel of the New York State Police described the search-and-rescue efforts on Sunday night as an "all hands on deck" endeavor, saying that several bridges had collapsed and many roads were impassable.

In a staggering scene, thousands of fish floated in the Al-Ezz River in the southeastern Iraqi governorate of Maysan due to water scarcity and the high level of salinity.

Social media activists shared videos of fish deaths with angry comments about the situation in their areas because of water scarcity.

The local authorities in Maysan announced on Saturday that they had monitored the deaths of fish in the Al-Ezz River, warning of serious diseases at the same time.

At least 17 persons died in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24-hours due to lightning strikes. There have been more rain-related deaths as well - five due to heavy rains and 12 due to drowning, office of the relief commissioner said.

One person each died due to lightning in Baghpat, Etawah, Unnao, Agra and Ballia, two each in Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj and Ghazipur and four in Mainpuri. One person died in Sant Kabir Nagar, two in Badaun, four in Bareilly and five in Rae Bareli due to drowning in water. One person each died in Etah, Kannauj and Kaushambi, and two in Muzaffarnagar due to excessive rains.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the loss of lives due to lightning, drowning in water and heavy rains in the state. He has given instructions to immediately distribute the assistance amount of Rs. 4 lakh each to the dependents of the deceased.

The blinding flash left one woman with severe burns, officials said, during a sudden thunderstorm over Kolomna, 75 miles southeast of Moscow.

Footage showed people wading through a deluge of rainwater before an immediate bolt appeared to shoot down, visibly terrifying those in the vicinity and causing some to fall over in shock.

The bolt is said to have hit an electric scooter first before the woman was also struck after standing nearby. She was seen being carried through the floodwater with clear signs of blackening from the lightning.

The distraught woman was rushed to intensive care at a nearby hospital. She is in a stable condition.

Incessant rainfall is wreaking havoc across several states in the country, including the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. The continuous downpour has torn apart the normal life of residents and has induced flash floods and landslides in several regions killing five people, reported PTI citing officials.

As per the agency, three members of a family were killed in a house collapse following a landslide due to rains in the Kotgarh area of Shimla district. On the other hand, a landslide also damaged a makeshift house near Kullu town, leaving a woman dead. In another incident, a person was buried alive following a landslide in Katiyan tehsil of Chamba on Saturday night, PTI reported.

According to ANI, train movement on the Shimla-Kalka heritage rail track has been cancelled for Sunday due to ongoing heavy rains and subsequent slides and waterlogging, said HP Traffic, Tourist and Railways Police. The railway track between Koti and Sanwara railway stations at Tunnel No. 10 has also been closed due to heavy rainfall on the Kalka-Shimla railway route, ANI reported. IMD has forecast rain in the state until July 13.

A 12-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in Rajasthan's Bundi on Sunday.

The incident occurred in Sadar police station area when the canines attacked the victim some distance away from the village. The boy ran for his life but the dogs went after him. He screamed for help but there was nobody around at that time. The dogs pounced on him and continued to attack him.

Finally, some passers-by saw the boy being attacked by dogs and rescued him. But, the boy was seriously injured and had almost fainted by then. His family members were informed and he was rushed to the hospital. However, the boy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

A thunderstorm caused heavy flooding in many parts of Calgary on Thursday, leading to multiple road closures and many commuters being stranded on the streets.

The city's northwest was especially hard hit and many residential neighbourhoods were impacted, such as Tuscany, Valley Ridge and Bowness.

Commuters experienced severe traffic in several areas, including Stoney Trail, Nose Hill Drive, eastbound John Laurie Boulevard and 14th Street N.W.

"Last night, a thunderstorm formed sort of northwest of the city and slowly drifted over the northwestern corner of the city, dropping quite a bit of rain and a little bit of small hail," said Environment Canada meteorologist Sara Hoffman.

She noted a thunderstorm warning was issued at 5:45 p.m. and it ended at 7:19 p.m., making it a relatively "long-lasting thunderstorm over the area."

Australia has gone from an average of just nine shark attacks a year in the 1990s to an average of 22 attacks from 2010-2020.

Incidents have been steadily rising, going from six attacks in 1992 to 17 in 2007 and 33 by 2015.

NSW and WA remain the most at risk places, with some areas considered shark bite 'hotspots', such as the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

There was an extreme uptick in incidents in 2020, recording 37 attacks, eight of which were fatal. It was the highest number of fatalities in 50 years.
