Firefighters are battling a large fire that broke out Sunday in the Jerusalem Forest and Mount Herzl area in the west of the city. The fire is approaching the Har Nof, Bayit Vagan neighborhoods and the Pi Glilot oil refinery.

Rescue teams have evacuated the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial nearby. One worker suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital.

The Fire Department spokesman said on Channel 10 that "large teams of firefighters have been deployed in the entire area, and curious onlookers should clear out. Firefighting planes are flying above us in an attempt to put out the fire."

US: Heatwave Bakes Midwest, Threatens to Move East

High temperatures and humidity were expected to bake a large swath of the United States again on Sunday and send afternoon heat indexes in dozens of cities to dangerous levels, where forecasters predicted they would remain through much of the coming week.

The National Weather Service posted excessive heat warnings for much of the nation's midsection, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, as well as South and North Dakota, where forecasters predicted heat indexes could hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

"This will likely be the most significant heat wave the region has experienced in at least the last five years," the weather service said.

The heat wave is expected to press east by the middle of the week, the weather service said.

In Chicago, where the high heat and humidity warnings were twinned with a poor air quality alert, forecasters expected temperatures to hit 95 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon, creating heat indexes as high as 105.

Heavy monsoon rains have led the mighty Brahmaputra River to overflow its banks and submerge scores of villages in India's remote northeastern state of Assam.

District magistrate Anwaruddin Chowdhury says more than 150,000 people have been hit by floods in three districts of northern Assam.

Chowdhury said Sunday at least one person died after he was swept away by the strong current when he jumped in the river to try to rescue his cattle.

Relief agencies are distributing rice, lentils and salt to tens of thousands of people in temporary shelters set up in schools, offices and other government buildings.

Indonesia Mount Lokon Volcano Spews Ash in Biggest Eruption

Image

A volatile volcano in central Indonesia unleashed its most powerful eruption yet Sunday, spewing hot ash and smoke thousands of feet (meters) into the air and sending panicked villagers racing back to emergency shelters. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Mount Lokon, located on northern Sulawesi island, has been dormant for years but rumbled back to life late last week.

A series of overnight blasts Thursday and Friday claimed one life - a woman who suffered a heart attack as she fled.

But Surono, a government volcanologist who uses only one name, said Sunday's 10:35 a.m. eruption released the greatest amount of energy so far, shooting soot and debris 11,400 feet (3,500 meters) into the sky.

"We're hoping this helped ease pressure building up behind the magma dome and that we'll now start seeing a reduction in activity," he said. "But it's too early to know."

US: Bee Swarms Plague California Neighbourhood, Killing Family Dog

Aggressive swarms of bees tormenting a Southern California neighbourhood have killed a family dog.

Kim Bammes' chocolate Labrador mix, Reggie, died after being stung so many times in the yard of her Wildomar home the veterinarian lost count.

Residents in the southwest Riverside County community say they can hear bees buzzing during certain times of day, and are now timing their comings and goings to the insects' schedule.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says Bammes tried but failed to get help from the county or city, and that Wildomar's code enforcement officer, Keith Ross, told her the city could not afford to exterminate the insects.

Deputy Director Keith Jones said the job would cost about $300.

County officials say there's little they can do because the hive is on a neighbour's private property.

Idaho, US: Lightning Sparks Off Wildfires Across Valley

Firefighters say lightning is likely responsible for three grass fires early Saturday morning in the Boise area.

Crews responded to a fire off Highway 55 by the Shadow Valley Golf Course, a small grass fire near Broadway and Myrtle and a large fire near Gowen and Orchard.

It made for a busy morning for fire crews, which turned into a busy afternoon as crews continued to fight the fire off Highway 55.

Firefighters said it's just unfortunately that time of year when weather, heat, and fuels combine to create a demand on their resources.

"Last night was very busy when that lightning storm rolled in," said David Cooper, the Boise Fire Battalion Chief. "We had multiple grass fires going on."

New Yorkers have witnessed an urban solar phenomenon, with the Sun setting in alignment with the city's skyscrapers and giving an effect fans say is reminiscent of Wiltshire's Stonehenge. Welcome to Manhattanhenge.

Twice every year amateur photographers gather in carefully-selected spots to set up tripods and wait to capture the ultimate sunset.

On Wednesday night at 2025 local time (0125 BST), the east-west lying streets of the city's famous grid system neatly framed the setting sun, creating golden glows New Yorkers rarely see.

During the phenomenon, the Sun appears to be nestled perfectly between the skyscraper corridors, illuminating the north and south sides of the streets.

Cause of huge hole at Summit unclear

As crews scurry to finish work on Spring Hill's $40 million Summit High School, workers have found a large sinkhole on one of its athletic fields.

Geotechnical engineers are searching for the cause of a 60-foot-long, 18-foot-wide and 14-foot-deep hole discovered earlier this week, said Director of Construction and Facilities Kevin Fortney.

Fortney described the large sinkhole to school board members Thursday night at their work session, joking that it was not part of the school's swimming program.
