USDA warns drought will bring about "significantly higher" food prices by 2013

Image

The US government acknowledged for the first time on Wednesday that the drought now covering two-thirds of the country will lead to significantly higher food prices.

The catastrophe in the corn belt, which has seen crops decimated by extreme heat and prolonged drought, will have ripple effects throughout the food system, the department of agriculture said in its food price outlook.

US consumers can expect to pay up to 4.5% more for beef because corn, which is used for cattle feed, will be in such tight supply, the report said.

Chicken and turkey were also projected to rise by up to 4.5%, and the price of eggs will also go up, but by about 2%.

Cooking oil, which is produced by the most devastated crops - corn and soybean - is projected to rise by 4.5% as well.Cattle, US drought, Indiana

Propaganda Alert! Drones can protect people during natural disasters

An ominous plume of black smoke hangs over east London. The scarcely believable news arrives in snippets: A huge blast has rocked the Thames Barrier; a surge of water is ploughing through the city; a sports stadium has collapsed; more explosions are reported on Twitter.

Thousands of people are trying to evacuate, but like the banks of the Thames, the mobile networks are overwhelmed.

It is time to send in the drones.

Professor Nick Jennings prefers to call them unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). He is one of the chief scientific advisers to the government, and drew up this fictional scenario as part of his multi-million pound Orchid research project.

Prof Jennings believes the key to mastering the pandemonium that follows large-scale disasters lies in intelligent, co-ordinated action between man and machine.

Comment: And so we begin to see why the post-9/11 'Muslim terror threat' was very useful to the Powers That Be. It allowed them to keep people distracted and dependent on their leaders at a time when there is clear evidence that the fate of all of humanity hangs in the balance in the form of 'earth changes' and increasing comet fragment/meteorite activity in our skies. The surveillance infrastructure they have built serves to give people the illusion that governments can protect people from the disasters. But there is nothing the Powers That Be can do to protect anyone from it. As always, protection comes from within yourself and colinear individuals that form a network, and it is this fact that they don't want the people to understand, because if they understood it, why would people need leaders at all...

Yes, the name sounds a little crazy, but the term often associated with a major dust storm in an arid region is called a haboob. It's Arabic for "strong wind" and is something people living in Arizona and the Phoenix area are becoming used to.

The massive Arizona dust storm slammed into the Phoenix area on Saturday July 21st, 2012. The dust storm was relentless with extremely strong winds knocking out power to over 9,000 customers as reported by the Tucson Citzen. Other areas close by effected by the dust storm were Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Apache Junction, Santan Valley, Chandler and Casa Grande.

The winds reached gusts as high as 45mph throughout the Phoenix area. Some drivers had to pull of off the road due to zero visibility situations from the thick cloud of dust spreading across the city. Some area residents reported damages to roofs and vehicles. One resident of the Tempe area shared a video on YouTube that you can watch below that showed their roof being nearly ripped off.

People have been sharing numerous pictures & tweets from Twitter of the storm that they are hash tagging as #haboob. Some of their accounts are below:

Mysterious gas bubbling up in Louisiana Bayous for nearly a month

    Assumption gas bubbles
Assumption Parish, Louisiana - Environmental experts are looking into an abandoned well as a possible source for mystery bubbles in Assumption Parish Bayous.

Officials have been trying to figure out what is causing the natural gas to rise up out of Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou for nearly a month.

OEP, DNR, and DEQ went out Monday night and observed what is believed to be an old orphaned well in the swamps about 1,000 feet from the main bubbling area in Bayou Corne.

It is suspected that this well may be the source of the natural gas bubbling in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou waterways. The Department of Natural Resources is currently investigating and bringing in necessary equipment to complete the investigation of the suspect orphaned well.

A mysterious rumbling noise remains a hot topic in the Huon Valley some 10 days after it was heard.

Hundreds of residents are still unable to explain the source of the 20-second roar.

The noise was first reported after a Huonville dam bank burst on July 15, causing the evacuation of 100 residents.

"It woke me up about 10pm we had no idea what was going on at the time but in hindsight maybe it was the dam breaking," a Scenic Hill Drive resident said on July 16.

But the council said the noise would not have been caused by the dam incident.

El Nino could strike as early as third quarter forecaster warns

The feared El Nino weather phenomenon could strike as early as the third quarter of 2012, raising prospects of wreaking weather havoc from North and South America to Asia, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said on Thursday.

"Overall, the forecaster consensus reflects increased chances for El Nino beginning in July-September 2012," the agency said in a monthly update.

The monthly report is the strongest prediction yet about when the El Nino weather phenomenon could emerge this year. Last month, it issued an El Nino watch, warning the phenomenon could materialize in the second half of the year, but said conditions were still neutral between June and August.

Fish kill at Lake Erie result of 'upwelling of cold water'

    Lake Erie fish kill
© Josh Barber / Erie Times-NewsThis dead freshwater drum, commonly known as a sheepshead, was photographed on the beach at Chautauqua park in Erie on July 24.

Hundreds of dead and dying sheepshead showed up along the Lake Erie shore in recent days.

The fish, also known as freshwater drum, were spotted over the weekend along North East Township near the Pennsylvania-New York state line and also in western Erie County between Elk Creek in Girard Township and Crooked Creek in Springfield Township.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officials said the die-off was due to a "natural phenomenon" called a seiche and was unrelated to pollution or other stresses caused by humans.
