It's being called the first confirmed attack of a person by a gray wolf in Minnesota history, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Now, a 16-year-old Solway boy is home recovering from a vicious bite wound to the head.

It happened early Saturday morning at the West Winnie Campground on Lake Winnibigoshish in north central Minnesota. The campground is operated by the U.S. Forest Service and was temporarily closed following the wolf attack, reports CBS affiliate WCCO in Minneapolis.

The gray wolf, also known as a timber wolf, was captured by trappers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The wolf was shot and killed to permit testing for rabies at the University of Minnesota veterinary diagnostic lab.

According to Col. Ken Soring, enforcement director for the DNR, Saturday's attack was freakish and unprecedented.

Body of 26-year-old man recovered after crocodile attack in Australia

Despite many signs and warnings not to swim man took to river

The body of Sean Cole, a 26-year-old swimmer, and the crocodile that killed him have been recovered by Australian police from a notorious Outback river at the weekend.

Cole and a friend made the fatal decision to swim across the Northern Territory's dangerous Mary River. They had been in the water a short time when a 15 foot crocodile snapped its jaws around Cole's chest as fifteen of their friends looked on in horror from the bank.

Northern Territory wildlife ranger Tom Nichols told the press that Cole's body and the dead crocodile floated to the surface early today. The crocodile was shot by rangers within hours of the deadly attack on Saturday, but it sunk away into the river before it could be retrieved.

The Mary River is a famous habitat for the dangerous reptiles and police are mystified as to why Cole decided to swim in it.

50 feet wide and growing: Sinkhole shuts down intersection in Springfield, Missouri

A sudden sinkhole swallowed part of a Springfield road. City Utilities crews discovered the sinkhole Monday and they say it's the biggest they've seen in Springfield.

The crews found the sinkhole as they were installing water mains near Walnut Lawn and Cox to boost water pressure to customers. During a test of the main, the massive sinkhole opened up, closing part of Walnut Lawn.

At one point, crews estimate the sinkhole is 50 feet wide and at least 25 feet deep. Because of its size, CU says it will take several days to stabilize it and fill it.

Several more trees fell into the Bayou Corne sinkhole Monday, suspending work at the site.

Officials set sinkhole activity at code three, the highest alert level. No work will be allowed on the sinkhole or within containment berms, though no elevated levels of seismic activity have been detected since last weeks' slough-in.

Monday's sinking occurred along the eastern edge of the sinkhole and is believed to be related to trees sinking in the sinkhole last week.

WNEM has learned that officials were on the scene of a water main break in the Saginaw County community of Carrollton Township.

The incident happened on Cadillac Place, which is four blocks east of North Michigan Avenue, near the intersection of Schust Road.

TV5 Reporter Gino Vicci says that half of the roadway has been washed away. It is not known if it is possible to navigate Cadillac Place at this time.

A sinkhole that was nearly four feet wide and 10 feet deep popped open during the eruption.

Carrollton Township officials say that new water meters were activated Monday. It's likely excess air in the lines caused at least four water mains to burst.

It happened on Harbor Lake Drive.

The 1,200-square-foot home was built in 2001 and is currently a rental property, according to the Orange County Appraiser's Office.

The renters said they heard what sounded like firecrackers inside the home around 7 p.m. As it turns out, it was the sound of tiles popping.

Neighbors said the renters were told the home is no longer safe.

Mass mortality of fish at Karachi Port

Dead Fishes
© The Nation, Pakistan
Karachi - Another case of fish mortality, mainly consisting of grey mullets surfaced within Karachi Port extending between Bab Island and Chinna Creek. This is the second such case in the month of August 2013, in which a huge quantity fish have died.

This mortality was attributed to pollution brought in by rain water flowing through Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) and laden with toxic chemicals when entered Karachi Harbour. It is estimated that about 100 m. tons fish have died.

During the present event of mortality, small quantity of fishes have died and beached in patches along Clifton beach since day before yesterday. Tiger tooth croaker, John croaker, mullets, terapons, scat, sea breams and other small fishes inhabiting open coastal waters along Clifton were observed to have been affected.

The mortality is attributed to red tide, a phenomenon which occurred due to abrupt an immense growth of small sized plant which is found in the sea. The reason for inducing sudden increase in this toxic plant (collectively known as phytoplankton) is not well understood.

Record-breaking snow and rainfall hits Atacama desert, Chile - Mudslides, blizzards and flash-flooding 3 years running for 'hottest, driest place on Earth'

Image
Santiago - A rare snowfall in Chile's Atacama desert has delighted visitors to one of the world's driest areas.

Residents of San Pedro de Atacama say the weekend snow was the heaviest in three decades for the desert city, which is 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) north of the capital, Santiago.

But local officials say they are concerned the snow and rain that fell over the weekend could cause some rivers to flood as has happened in the past.

The national tourism office says the road to San Pedro de Atacama was temporarily blocked due to the unusual weather. Officials have not ordered any evacuation although they expect more rain in the area.
