Unusual severe weather threat for Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan next week

Unusual weather for Middle East

The threat for severe weather will dip unusually far south into the Middle East early next week.

Residents across northern Saudi Arabia, southwestern Iraq and eastern Jordan are being put on alert for potentially violent thunderstorms.

The danger will shift northwest to southeast across the threat zone from Monday into Tuesday. Tabuk and Medina, Saudi Arabia, and Najaf, Iraq, are among the cities at risk.

"On Tuesday, the severe threat will become more spotty in nature from Medina on south," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards.

"Damaging wind and flooding rain will be the main threats from any severe thunderstorm," Richards said. Hail cannot be ruled out.

Richards added that the impending severe weather danger in this part of the Middle East is rather unusual and will be triggered by a storm system that is diving farther south than normal.

"Typically, [the areas at risk] are dry most of the time and at most, any severe thunderstorm is spotty," he said. "However, we could see a squall line [of damaging thunderstorms] develop early next week."

Several Glengormley homeowners are facing huge repair bills after what has been described as a "mini tornado" ripped through the Ballyhenry area on Thursday afternoon (November 12).

More than half a dozen houses in Ballyhenry Avenue and neighbouring Dorchester Crescent were badly damaged in the freak weather event, which local resident Gavin Robinson described as "a mini tornado."

Trees were blown over, garden fences were blown down and ridge tiles and slates were ripped off the roofs of a number of properties.

Despite the flying roof tiles and other debris, local people say no-one was injured during the incident.

Repair work is under way in the area, but the cost of fixing some of the hardest-hit homes could run to thousands of pounds.

Doctors at a Bangladesh hospital were treating a baby girl born with two heads on Thursday, medical officials and the newborn's father said.

The baby was born late Wednesday and is now being treated for breathing difficulties after being shifted to the intensive care unit of the country's largest hospital in Dhaka.

"When I saw my baby, I was awestruck. She has two fully developed heads. She is eating with two mouths and breathing with two noses," her father, Jamal Mia, said.

"Still, I thank Allah that she and the mother are now okay," Mia told AFP.

Abu Kawsar, owner of the Standard Hospital of Total Healthcare where the baby was born by Cesarean section, said initial tests showed she only has one set of vital organs.

Huge hailstones smash car windows, buildings in Nhlangano, Swaziland

It appears that there might be hope for the much anticipated rainfall as Nhlangano and surrounding areas experienced a heavy downpour in the afternoon yesterday which lasted approximately 20 minutes.

The downside of it is that the rain was accompanied by strong winds and huge hailstones, which caused damage to property and vegetation.

The huge hailstones caused damage on rooftops, leaving gaping holes resulting in rain water leaking into buildings. It also shattered windows on buildings and motor vehicles.

Nhlangano residents ran helter-skelter as they searched for cover while motorists searched for safe places to park.

In some of the streets in the small southern town, vegetation, especially tree branches, were broken as a result of the strong wind.

Showers started pouring at around 3pm resulting in some shops and houses being flooded with water as the heavy downpour continued.

Potentially catastrophic earthquake in Siberia could rip Eurasian continent in half

The whole Baikal rift zone in Siberia is going through a phase of rising tectonic activity
A wave of unusual seismic activity has prompted fears that a catastrophic earthquake could be on its way to Siberia which could tear Europe and Asia apart.

Scientists have predicted the earthquake could cause widespread devastation after more than 50 major tremors have been recorded around the north of Lake Baikal - the world's deepest lake.

Many scientists believe the constant activity in the region will eventually lead to the entire Eurasia continent being ripped in half. The tremors have varied in magnitude from 3.0 to 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

Experts from around the world have been monitoring the situation, with some warning the whole Baikal rift zone in Siberia is going through a phase of rising tectonic activity.

Such activity can take place every 50 to 60 years according to scientists, with a quake potentially having a disastrous impact on towns and cities in the area. Experts have even speculated that the constant seismic activity will lead the Eurasian land mass being torn in two at Baikal in 650million years.

A powerful low-pressure system swept through the Midwest, spawning severe thunderstorms and high winds. Several tornadoes were reported in Iowa, which was among numerous states reporting damage from the fast-moving system.

The Wednesday evening event qualified as a derecho, according to Stu Ostro, Senior Director of Weather Communications at The Weather Channel.

The storms "met the criteria for length and concentration of the swath of wind damage reports," said Ostro. "This fit more into the 'serial' derecho type of classification than a 'progressive' derecho."

Here are the latest impacts from each state affected by this round of severe weather.
