The River Don reaches record levels and has already burst its bank in places with another three inches of rain expected before 8am on Friday morning.

More communities are expected to wake up to flood misery in the morning as further parts of Scotland reach saturation point .

The River Don in Aberdeenshire has hit its highest level on record and is expected to burst its banks in several places tonight - threatening even more properties after days of heavy rainfall brought devastation for many.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Met Office have warned of another three inches of rain expected before 8am on Friday morning.

Police Scotland said it is dealing with a "major incident" across the north-east as two severe warnings of potential danger to life are issued for Kintore and Inverurie, along with 37 more flood warnings across the country.

Parts of Grandholm in Aberdeen are on evacuation alert tonight as experts monitor river levels and a rest centre has been set up at Bridge of Don Academy.

Rest centres have also been set up at Inverurie Academy, Kintore Community Hall, and Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, where flood barriers have been erected amid fears the River Carron will burst its banks overnight.

Ticking time-bomb: Yellowstone super-volcano could kill millions

The US is in more immediate danger from "super-volcanos" like the one in the Yellowstone National Park, than other natural disasters -- as it may go off within the next 80 years, scientists say.

Experts from the European Science Foundation have determined that the likelihood of an eruption happening at one of the major volcanoes within 80 years is around 5-10%, due to a "volcano season" of increased activity.

Unusually strong snowstorms have swept through Armenia in recent days, killing one person, blocking major highways and leaving many cars stranded.

The blizzards aggravated by freezing temperatures began on New Year's Eve and continued in various parts of the country in the following days. The southeastern Syunik province was hit particularly hard by the calamity.

Police found on Tuesday the dead body of a 48-year-old man near Goris, a town in Syunik. The man, who worked as a guard at a local cattle farm, reportedly went missing on Monday after heading home to get some food.

The continuing heavy snowfall in the area blocked on Tuesday morning traffic through a road connecting Goris to another regional town, Sisian. Dozens of vehicles were left stranded there.

Over 7,800 dead murres counted on beaches of Whittier, Alaska

Dead murres line a beach in Prince William Sound the first week of January, 2016.

Thousands of dead common murres are washing up on the beaches of Whittier, an unprecedented die-off that has scientists wondering how many more thousands remain uncounted throughout Prince William Sound.

A recently retired federal biologist doing beach surveys in Whittier over the weekend estimated there were more than 7,800 dead murres along a little over a mile of beach. That's nearly five dead birds per meter of beach, officials say.

The scale of the die-off is unprecedented along the Sound, longtime residents say.

"It's just mind-boggling," said David Janka, a Cordova charter owner who passed along reports of dead birds from there as well as Valdez, Tatitlek and Chenega. "I just took a picture a few minutes ago of an eagle with a murre in its talons."

Washed-up minke whale removed from shore in Invergordon, Scotland

A dead 12ft minke whale washed up on the beach at Invergordon has been removed - after council officials had to rethink how to do it.

The carcasse appeared on the town's shore on Monday and the Highland Council's environmental health officers hoped to use a crane to take it away.

But a council spokeswoman said because of the dead mammal's location, they had not been able to use conventional lifting equipment.

Instead, a special crane was sent for and it was lifted off the beach on Wednesday.

The spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that the whale has been uplifted and has been taken away by the specialist contractor for disposal.

"The environmental health officer said there was no health hazard to the public if it was left just a little longer.

Boy in stable condition after shark attack on Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Shark attacks
An 11-year-old boy was in a stable condition in hospital on Wednesday after he was mauled by a shark on the Great Barrier Reef off the Australian east coast, officials said.

The boy was attacked by a black tipped reef shark on Tuesday afternoon as he waded off a beach at the Heron Island tourist resort northeast of the coastal town of Gladstone, Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic Brad Lawson said.

Officials have not released the victim's name or commented on media reports that he is an Italian tourist on vacation with his family.

He sustained a significant injury to his right calf, ambulance service spokesman Krathyn White said.

The boy's father helped him from the water and took him to the resort's nurse who treated his wounds, Lawson said.

Ball lightning? 'Strange light' seen over Canberra, Australia

A video appearing to show a strange light above Canberra during a storm was probably capturing "ball lightning", an astronomer has said.

The video uploaded to YouTube last night, claims to show a circle or donut-shaped light appearing in the Canberra sky during a storm.

Australian National University astronomer Brad Tucker said the red and green light which glowed faintly in the background was "characteristic of an aurora" however believed this time it was ball lightning.

"An aurora is when energy from the sun hits the earth's atmosphere, the energy rubs the earth's atmosphere with friction and charges the gas," he said.

"But the problem is there was no activity from the sun, it was cloudy, we can't see the aurora, so it doesn't really fit."

Dr Tucker said in this case, the energy to create an aurora probably came from the thunderstorm itself.

"The same activity that causes an aurora, can actually happen inside our atmosphere if you have a storm with a lot of electrical charge that is rubbing against the gases in our atmosphere, causing it to grow that green or red colour," he said.

"Sometimes, if you get a really interesting occurrence, you create something called 'ball lightning'.

"Normally lightning strikes up and down hitting the ground, but ball lightning is a weird thing where it appears as a ball explosion, sometimes it can even move around in the sky."

Comment: Electric universe theory provides rational, intelligible explanations for such atmospheric phenomena as ball lightning, plasma discharges, noctilucent clouds, lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes.
