You can't blame this dog for looking a bit confused at the unusual sight that washed up on a beach.

This massive jellyfish was one of tens of thousands of dead starfish and jellyfish that have appeared on the coastline in West Sussex and Hampshire.

Stormy weather is the cause behind the bizarre scene, and this no-nonsense beast was the size of a dustbin lid.
Student James Wileman, 23, claimed he saw hundreds of dead sea creatures between Southsea Pier and Eastney in Portsmouth.

Two earthquakes, which measured 3.2 on the Richter scale, were detected yesterday morning (Sunday) in the southeastern part of the Bárðarbunga caldera. Bárðarbunga is a stratovolcano located below Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland's largest ice cap.

Bárðarbunga is also part of an extensive volcanic system that is approximately 200 km (120 mi) long and 25 kilometres (16 mi) wide.

According to the IMO's information, high frequency spikes due to frost were also clearly seen on stations close to Hekla yesterday.

5.0 magnitude earthquake strikes central Turkey

earthquake
A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit central Turkey late Sunday, The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD) stated. No casualties have yet been reported from the area.

The epicenter of the quake was declared as the Çiçekdağı district of central Kırşehir province.

The tremor was also felt in neighboring Kırıkkale and the capital Ankara, AFAD addded.

In Turkey, earthquakes are scaled by Boğaziçi University's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. The observatory and AFAD keep record of every earthquake in and around the country.

Kandilli Observatory also offers a webpage listing the last 2000 earthquakes that took place in mainland Turkey, its islands, territorial waters or surrounding regions.

Lava lake on the rise - again? Rockfalls cause explosions at Hawaiian volcano

Kilauea Volcano explosion
© USGS HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY This webcam screen capture shows an explosive event that occurred after a rockfall Friday morning at the Overlook vent within Halema‘uma‘u Crater at the summit of Kilauea Volcano.
A series of rockfalls into Kilauea Volcano's summit lava lake causing small explosions lighting the night sky could be the result of the lake starting to rise again.

Since Saturday, there have been three such rockfalls resulting in small explosions at the summit lake, said Janet Babb, a geologist with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

"When the lava lake rises, it heats the rock in the vent's rim, and as you know, when you heat things, things expand and the rocks crack," Babb explained, "and because it becomes unstable, periodically we see these rockfalls."

She added, "Over the past week, the level of the lava lake has been the highest it has been in the past six months."

On Christmas Eve, the lake was about 210 feet below the floor; on Nov. 29, about 165 feet below; on Oct. 15, about 260 feet below; on Sept. 16, about 236 feet below; and on Aug. 20 about 190 feet below the crater floor. This week, the lava lake level has fluctuated from about 115 feet below on Sunday to 95 feet below on Wednesday. Thursday afternoon, the level was about 112 feet below the floor of Halemaumau.

The lava lake last overflowed the Overlook vent rim sending flows across the floor of Halemaumau Crater between late April and May 9, drawing thousands of visitors looking to get a glimpse of the activity. It marked the first time the floor of Halemaumau was exposed to lava since 1982.

Friday, Babb said, the lava still remained out of sight of visitors at Jaggar Museum. However, an incandescent glow is visible at night.

The most recent rockfall and explosive event occurred early Friday. At 3:51 a.m., a section of the Overlook vent's eastern wall fell into the summit lava lake resulting in a small explosion that agitated the lake enough to light up the night sky, she said. The explosion occurs when the rocks hit the lava lake's gas-rich foam-like surface.

Magnitude 4 earthquake felt in El Salvador

earthquake
A four-magnitude earthquake in Richter's scale was felt in some regions in El Salvador on Sunday, especially in the department of Usulutan, 117 kilometers from this capital.

The earth tremor was reported at 03:52 hours, local time, on Sunday, and its epicenter was located 10 kilometers deep, off the coast of that region. No material damage or human victims were reported.

El Salvador is in a highly-seismic region due to the volcanic chain that is part of the Pacific fire belt, which runs along the country's territory.

Another earthquake-generating source is a system of geological faults that run from northwest to southeast on Salvadorian territory.

It has been a stormy week across California with several El Niño-enhanced storms slamming the state, resulting in widespread flooding and road closures.

Southern California has been one of the areas hit the hardest by the train of storms with inches of rain falling in the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego.

"Drainage systems have been unable to handle the deluge, forcing partial closures of roads and major interstates, including Interstate 5," AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff said.
