Lightning kills 2 during coffee break at home in the Philippines

mmmmmm
A tragic lightning strike claimed the lives of a farmer and his nephew during their noontime coffee break inside their home in Sitio Mabuhay, Barangay Tipoloon, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Thursday afternoon.

According to the Claveria community police precinct, the victims were identified as Santiago Maunay, a farmer, and his 14-year-old nephew, also surnamed Maunay. They were electrocuted when lightning struck through an open space in their roof and hit the spoons they were holding.

Investigations revealed that the two were having coffee in their dining area amid heavy rain and a severe thunderstorm, which had reduced visibility to nearly zero in their mountain village.

While waiting for the storm to pass, Santiago reached for a spoon to stir his coffee when a sudden flash of lightning struck the roof and passed through, electrocuting both men who were sitting side by side at the table.

The force of the strike threw them from their seats. Barangay rescue units quickly rushed them to a hospital located two hours from the accident site.

Sadly, both victims sustained severe burns and were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The Swiss village of Blatten has been partially destroyed after a huge chunk of glacier crashed down into the valley.

Although the village had been evacuated some days ago because of fears the Birch glacier was disintegrating, one person has been reported missing, and many homes have been completely flattened.

Blatten's mayor, Matthias Bellwald, said "the unimaginable has happened" but promised the village still had a future.

Local authorities have requested support from the Swiss army's disaster relief unit and members of the Swiss government are on their way to the scene.

The disaster that has befallen Blatten is the worst nightmare for communities across the Alps.

Bear attack leaves woman critical after attack near Llubljana, Slovenia

MMMMM
A woman has been left critically injured after being set upon by a bear in a forested area, with residents warned to stay away as the animal fled.

The attack happened Tuesday at the edge of the forest in Skofljica, some 10 kilometres (6 miles) southeast of Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana, police said. The bear is said to have launched a horror attack on the woman before retreating into the forest, with authorities urging Skofljica residents to keep away from the area and be cautious. It came just days after authorities approved the culling of 206 brown bears, whose population in the area has grown to around 1,000.

The small Alpine nation of just over 2 million people is home to several vast forests with many protected nature zones. Despite strong opposition from animal rights groups, authorities occasionally approve bear or wolf culls. Two bear attacks on people were recorded in 2022, according to Slovenia's official STA news agency.

The hail that fell during the storm was measured to be between 5.5 and 6 inches wide. That's larger than a soda can and much heavier.
