The high mountain regions of Turkey's Rize district, located on the Black Sea coast in the northeastern part of the country, woke up under a blanket of snow - an unusual sight for the end of September. According to TRT Haber and regional media, the rain that fell during the day turned into snow at night, with the snow cover reaching up to 10 centimeters in places, BTA reports.
The most affected are the Avusor and Kavron plateaus in the Çamlıkhemşin municipality, where shepherds still live. Residents say that although such phenomena are not unknown in the region, such early snowfall always causes surprise.
The website TurkishTourismNews published footage of the snow-covered slopes, describing them as "winter landscapes in the middle of autumn". Locals say that while the snow has not caused any major problems, it has affected livestock grazing and hastened preparations for their return to lower pastures.
A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck near the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka region, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake's epicenter was 127 kilometers (79 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and it struck at 6:58 a.m. Friday local time, according to the USGS. It had a depth of 19.5 kms.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning System briefly issued a tsunami threat but later lifted it.
The initial quake was followed by a series of aftershocks of up to magnitude 5.8.
The remote Kamchatka region has been hit by a series of powerful earthquakes, including quakes of magnitude-7.4 last week and another one in July.
A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled Indonesia's easternmost Papua region early Friday, causing damage in the coastal town of Nabire and forcing residents to flee their homes, AP reported.
While no casualties have been reported, officials confirmed that at least two houses and the town's main bridge collapsed in Nabire, Central Papua.
Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a video statement that a government office, a church, and the local airport also suffered minor damage. "Overall, the situation is safe and under control," he assured, adding that emergency crews were already on the ground.
Residents fled homes and moved toward higher ground when the quake hit, fearing a tsunami. Telecommunication networks in Nabire and nearby towns were disrupted, complicating early response efforts, according to agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari.
August, saw a stark decrease in sunspots (133) compared to July (210), yet this decline is not unusual as solar cycles can exhibit fluctuations even during the peak phase. The decrease may indicate a transition phase within the solar maximum, where activity can vary significantly.
Yet, this month's solar activity set the stage for increased geomagnetic activity in early September, including a G3-level geomagnetic storm that resulted in stunning auroras across various regions, including the United States.
Considering the erratic solar activity and significant geomagnetic storms we can expect more extreme weather in the upcoming months.
Panama's seasonal upwelling collapsed in 2025, linked to reduced winds. The event signals risks for fisheries and climate-sensitive ocean processes.
The annual phenomenon of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama failed to occur in 2025 for the first time on record. A team of scientists from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) linked the disruption to weakened trade winds.
The finding underscores how changes in climate can directly affect essential ocean processes and the coastal populations that depend on them.
Recently, Beijing, Liaoning, Henan, Shandong, Sichuan, and Hubei provinces have been hit by extreme weather, including heavy rain and hail. Several cities have experienced severe flooding, leaving urban areas awash with water, and shops and homes submerged. Beijing also experienced rare hailstorms, leaving many dealerships with new cars parked outdoors, which were dented by hail, causing heavy losses.
Residents of Jiujiang, Jiangxi: "Oh my god, there's a flood! Jiujiang Pedestrian Street has become a river!"
On September 17, heavy to torrential rain continued in parts of Jiangxi, Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, and other provinces. On the same day, the meteorological department raised the emergency response level for major meteorological (rainstorm) disasters from Level 4 to Level 3.
A 65-year-old farmer, Pundalik Subhedar, from Kokare village in Kolhapur's Chandgad tehsil, on Monday succumbed to the injuries suffered in a gaur attack on his farm field the previous day. He had suffered severe waist and body injuries and was being treated at a private hospital in Gadhinglaj.
The forest department has provided an immediate relief of Rs 5 lakh to Subhedar's family, with an additional Rs 20 lakh to be granted in accordance with govt norms.

A yacht sinking after being rammed by orcas (Image video still from Terra Incógnita @oceaniclounge/Instagram)
One boat has been sunk and a second damaged by a pod of orcas (killer whales) off the coast of Portugal.
The sunken vessel, named Oceanview, which belongs to the Nautic Squad, a sailing based in Oeiras, had five people on board when it was attacked on Saturday afternoon.
Portuguese coastguard officials said the sinking occurred approximately five nautical miles (9km) from the beach at Fonte da Telha, just south of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.
Footage recorded from a nearby vessel shows an orca repeatedly striking the underside of the yacht, which eventually takes on water and begins sinking.
A translated recounting of the encounter posted on Instagram by Portuguese sailing school Terra Incógnita states that the orcas 'broke the rudder of the sailboat, opening a hole below the waterline, allowing water to enter.'
A photographer in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, recorded what he described as an "amazing" lightning event during a storm in the early hours of September 17. Frankie Lucena's video shows what NASA classifies as a rare kind of "Transient Luminous Event," or TLE — a "gigantic jet." "Gigantic jets are powerful electrical discharges that erupt from the top of a thunderstorm and travel upward into the upper atmosphere," NASA says. Credit: Frankie Lucena via Storyful
